Yes there was. And there was a Canberra connection.

Avro Canada proposed adding 4 x bomb pylons in an attempt to meet a Sept 1950 USAF light bomber requirement. Those 4 x 1,000 lb bombs were considered inadequate and the CF-100 was dropped from the competition (along with North American's B-45 Tornado and AJ-1 Savage). That left just the Martin XB-51 and the English Electric Canberra ... which was eventually chosen as the Martin B-57.

And on the RW interceptor side, in May 1956, Avro Canada proposed a retrofit for CF-100s by placing a Bristol Orpheus turbojet on either wingtip.

Indeed. That VTOL Canuck concept used the same Orenda-devised 'eyelid' flapper-valve cascade outlets as the 1956 'X-Wing' fighter for the US Navy's TS-140.

From Avro Canada's Oct 1956 brochure, "Proposal for VTOL Visual Fighter in Accordance with U.S. Navy Specification TS-140":

Maximum speed: Mach=1.75, climb/cruise Mach=0.9
Rate of Climb 55,600 ft/min (at sea level at Mach=0.9)
Ceiling (combat) 62,000 ft
Powerplants: 4 x Orenda-licenced Orpheus BOr.11 (5,760 lb st)

We're a bit short on armour in this GB's Inspiration section.

So, naturally, that brings up the Canadian Ram - effectively, an American M3 chassis turned Cruiser Tank. And therein lay the problem - in part, putting a Cruiser-style MG turret on the Ram's hull resulted in a smallish turret ring diameter of only 60.5-inches (1,537 mm).

RW, that small turret ring resulting in the Ram seeing no combat (other than as turretless Ram Kangaroo carriers). Instead, Montreal Locomotive Works eventually switched production to the Grizzly medium tank - effectively an M4A1 copy on an improved Ram lower hull (also employed by the Sexton SP gun).

But what if a Close Support variant (with 75 mm gun or 3-inch howitzer) had been part of the Ram's original requirement? That Cruiser Tank requirement was issued too early for awareness of the future M4 Sherman's 69-inch (1,753 mm) turret ring. But a CS Ram variant might have prompted copying the 65-inch (1650 mm) turret ring size from the Afrika Korps' 75 mm-armed PzKpfw IVs?

So, what other whif developments might have turned Ram tanks from training vehicles to medium tanks actively taking the fight to the Wehrmacht?

Yes.. this GB coming AFTER I had completed my RAM out of the Box. There is certainly room for a bit of whiffing, considering the base chassis was used for the Sexton and a redimentary 3.7inch AA platform.
Dozer, engineering tank, ARV some other ideas.
