YF-1 Pogo
« on: June 29, 2025, 04:38:49 AM »
Hi all

Couldn't resist a 50's GB

I'm weighing in with this......

Not that many parts

A Whiff in a box  ;D

I'm drawn towards the Japanese version but I do like the Royal Navy colours also.

Mind you I have a vision  of the Pogo castoring across a rolling deck like so many shopping trollies  ;D.

My other idea is a shiny silver finish akin to the later EE Lightnings complete with cannons and sidewinder missiles.

I'll have to give it some more thought, its the usual half arsed under researched project you would expect from me ;) ;)

More when it happens.........

If you're going to use the kit decals, check them before you use them. I've not built this kit, but I have built quite a few of these Kozavody / AZ models kits. When they're good, the decals are excellent, but they can sometime be poor quality, poor register, visible dot patterns, incorrect colours, etc. Also they are very thin, which is good when they're on the model, but they tear easily, and also they can take longer than expected to release from the paper, so don't rush to slide them off . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Got to love a Pogo!
Those markings are nuts! I think I might go with the JASDF as that’s the least sane choice.

JASDF would be less sane.
I just think that things tend to look good in "silver" and in Royal Navy greys.

Hi all.

Finally made some decisions on the how the Pogo is going to be finished.

It's going to be an interceptor in RAF 74 (tiger) squadron markings, the main colour will be glossy silver with gloss black tail fins, I'm not sure if that massive spinner will be black or another colour.

The markings will come from this sheet....

The tiger heads are definitely going to make an appearance and I might work in some tiger teeth  decoration as well.

It's going to need some armament so I'm enlarging the wing pods to allow for the gun mechanism, further armament will be Sidewinder missiles on the wing tips.

Here's the bits.....

A messy mock up of the wing tip layout

And the PSR has started

Internal fuel is probably a bit limited, so I'm going to add a couple of external tanks, Voodoo style, to give it more range

Thanks for looking.....

Well, I was sort of hoping to see the FAA scheme, but I'm sure it'll look terrific when finished.

Hi all

A bit more progress, as is expected from KP it looks good but the fit leaves a little to be desired and the instructions  are inaccurate.

One part (19) does not appear on the instructions it is actually the valance behind the control panel and part 16 is shown as the valance is actually the rear bulkhead.  Fit of the cockpit parts is poor and it is difficult to reproduce the real thing. I've done my best but now the cockpit is the RAF fit    ::)

Considering this is a short run kit with no locating pins the fuselage went together pretty well with only a minimum of filling and sanding. Some of the detail didn't line up too well

I had something similar on the wings.  but that got lost in the alterations  ;D

Thanks for looking.......

Hi all

The wings are on plus the air intakes and tail exhaust, fit was better than expected but still needed filler, especially around the intakes.

A little bit of fettling and we will be ready for primer

Hi all

Got through the primer/PSR/primer/PSR stage fairly easily and it's now ready for painting,

I've found some very shiny silver paint courtesy of MTN by Montana Colours (made in Spain), it's probably the brightest I've seen in a rattle can but has a down side in that it us difficult to mask and some of the metallic surface pulls off with the tape, maybe you have to leave it a few days to fully dry.

To get around this i am going to spray the black sections first and then the silver.

I've just placed the prop in position here,  the blades are very thin and flimsy, they will be the last pice of the kit to be assembled.

'Mog, with the masking issue, either;
1: remove the masking while the paint is still wet (this will mean the paint on the tape hasn't bonded to the paint on the model), or
2: get a sharp hobby knife & cut along the edges of the masking tape before removal.

I frequently paint the radome first as it’s easy to wrap tape around the top of the “cone” shape rather than the base of it.
Doesn’t silver or metallic paint work better with a black base coat anyway?

Thanks for the advice chaps

Kerrick :-  I think you are right re undercoat for silver when spraying, but I'll be using a rattlecan, they push out so much paint the primer colour us irrelevant   ;D ;D

Had a small set back, the original missile system design is flawed, if I fired a sidewinder with my current setup the rear fins would catch the wing pod. To fix this I've turned them into seperate rails  and mounted them above and below the wing pods.

Problem solved and to my eyes it looks better aesthetically

Thanks for looking....

Hi all

Well I said it was going to be shiny, but it's come out of the paint shop VERY shiny  ;D

I'm going let it dry properly for a couple of days( it's been 12 hours and it's still tacky) and then handle it very carefully when i finish it off so I don't loose the shine,  some cotton gloves may be required methinks  ;D
