Title: Salvaging a stuff-up

Things didn't go well with my first attempt at the Matchbox Vickers Wellesley. Construction was okay, but the decals couldn't be revived from their ancient state even with slatherings of Micro Superfilm and varnish. They insisted on suicide.

What's left of the starboard roundel after carving it off.

The port wing walkway markings weren't much better than this even before scrubbing them away.

So let's strip the paint soon. But what markings? Hmmm, there were two different ones with the Airfix Fairey Battle...

Belgian might look good!

Why is it when decals go bad and won’t stick to the model they still leave gobs of goo behind that won’t come off?

Wait - this is horrible! You put a clear film on the decal sheet and they still failed? Holy Zombie Jesus! This is the holy grail of decal resurrection! How old were they?

Belgian markings are a great call with that camo scheme!

Extra points for rudder stripes or a fin flash too.

When decals go bad, they usually go very bad.

Yep, had exactly the same thing happen to me, with a couple of old Airfix bagged kits. I tried MicroScale Liquid Decal Film, Klear, water and solvent based clear varnish, and every time the decal crumbled into bits as soon as it touched the water . . .

cheers,
Robin.

Belgian sounds good, if they're not evil Belgians! Muhuhuhahaha!

No idea, but Matchbox kits haven't been around for a long time.

I can never hear 'Belgians' without thinking of the Monty Python skit; "Miserable fat Belgian b*st*rds!"  ;D

That is certainly a most unfortunate turn of events with the decals.  Nothing more annoying than to have the things fail when you need them the most.

Looking back, I shouldn't have even tried, they were that far gone. Oh well, am I a whiffer or not? YES! So alternate schemes are more than welcome!

Repaint done, decaling has begun.

Looking good.

Looking at the last pic there and the wingspan makes me wonder about a USAAF pre-war U-2 type version operating at high altitude... ;)

I have one more in the stash, possible whiff would be to remove the engine, lengthen the nose to compensate for C of G change, and have it recycled into a troop glider for Operation Overlord.

Appears to be lurching back to life nicely
