The French were concerned that Raphael would not be able to handle rougher airstrips, such as those found in Chad etc. So a programme to find a lighter, rough field operator for such deployments began. The Poignard (or Poniard) was "off the shelf" to the maximum, using only parts for which jigs existed already, also, weapons and systems already in production.

A two seat jaguar was used as the basis of the design. This gave more room for fuel and systems, and the reshaping was meant to give improved performance. After three hand built prototypes, only two of which were flyable, it was realised, in a very British set of circumstances, that rebuilding, refurbishing jaguars would do just as well, be cheaper, quicker and in the end of course, totally unnecessary as the Raphael turned out fine.
The 1st flying prototype was painted up for Farnborough in fictional markings.

Meanwhile, in a place called Manicstan, a more successful rebuild programme was underway.

Different, nicely different!!! 8) :)

Love the color scheme which really looks nice with those markings!
Manicstan, are there Bangles concerts there on Mondays?

Groan, OMG Brian, now I'm glad I didn't make it Egyptian!
Thanks for the nice words folks, quite encouraging. :) As for the camo, it's a sort of, 'Hazy shade of winter'. (ahem)
For several years the Manicstanies quietly offered former MIG staff settle there, with a promise of good work, and bought lots of manufacturing
equipment, parts and airframes as scrap metal, in order to produce a simple aircraft for forming a minor fleet but with a long life.
Happy to be free of homeland restrictions, these recruits gave some of their best work, and even enabled upgrade programmes for foreign
customers. This is the ADV (Manic Mig R1), pics of the FGA (Manic Mig R2) to follow. R for Rebuilt. [/size]

These are both great !! :-*

+1. Keep up the great work.

The Poignard is wonderful, it looks so right! I'm a real sucker for a delta canard, and the "humpback" appearance really adds to it. I was wondering what the base kit was! Bravo!!

Thanks again folks, I am not used to typing with a smug grin on my face :) .
Base kit was ye olde matchbox (I think) Jag T2, certainly T2 anyway, hence the hump back. Sooooo glad you like 'em chaps.

I may have one of them! Or an Italeri one, anyway. Time to plot...

As promised, the R2 version of the MiG, a less advanced mod but still a useful kite. More modern weapons from wider sources could be used, but the same old power unit was simply built anew. Although the R2 can carry and drop smart munitions, it cannot mark it's own targets as yet. A copy of the old U.S. Tisoe (target identification set elctro optical) and TFR are the two most important improvements to the strike variant, it is possible that further upgrade may be possible, or the Manicstan air force may save the $$$$ toward a later, more long term airframe.

That's just great and I love the wavy camo!
