Title: When Caterpillar meets IKEA - Finished!
Post by: Antonio Sobral on December 14, 2015, 06:30:40 AM
Dear All

This will be my next projet ;)

I confess that the title may me misleading, but I coudn't think of anything better for now :)

The base will be a Swedish S-Tank:

Hence the IKEA part!

The rest will be some modifications made by Caterpillar...in a couple of hundreds os years.

Damn, my fingers were too fast and I entered the previous post without finishing it!

So, here it continues...

The Caterpillar contribution to the project will be made with...Gillete parts.
Please bear with me, because the mistery will be over in a jiffy!

The origin
(http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz158/AARSOBRAL/Grua/grua-001.jpg)

The process:

And the result:

And the Caterpillar part is pretty much accounted!

Now back to the Stridsvagn 103 (Strv 103), also known as the S-Tank.

Some modifications to the hull:

I forgot to mention but the scale is 1/48!

So here is a photo of the final version of the crane (changed the telescopic arm from round to square)
with an apropriate figure:

Again the vehicle withe the engine and landing gear almost completed:

And on the base (made with roofmate trimmed with a hot wire):

Another figure enters the scene, along with the crane in a resting position:

Did I mention the the crane is fully functional ? (well, not REALLY functional, but you get the idea :) )

Another test:

And now with the scene decided is time for adding some more details to the vehicle.

To be Continued.... :)

Thanks for stopping by!

Indeed.  I shall have to remember that when I get ready to throw away the disposable razors I'm using (another brand, the blades are not lousy).

Excellent concept.  Certainly gives that old S-Tank a new purpose and appearance.

Wow, that's great concept :) Can't wait to see finished model.
Heh, now I know why throwing away all that used shaving razors rubbed me wrong...

Wow! Amazing crane! And great reuse of "disposable" blades. So is this really a Shaving Tank?

Aheeemmmm..., Antonio...??

It looks a very tiny little bit like you are nuts, crazy, weird!! ???  ;)

But in a amiable way, my friend!
And again, I'm "von den Socken"! (means: astonished with the mouth and eyes wide open)

Norbert

By the way, Antonio: If you ever need a sword or a machete...:
Don't throw the blades of the razors to the litterbox; you can cut them with an ordinary scissor, add a wooden or plastic handle/hilt and the (perfectly working) miniature sword or machete is ready!.
Like this (Scale: 1/25):

If the crew was in space suits you could say they were drilling into the frozen methane on one of the moons of Jupiter.

Hi folks

Thanks for the comments and tips!

Next time I won't throw away the blades  ;)

The original idea was actually doing an "outer space" scene, but the lack of expertise to modify the figures and suits in a credible way
made me place the action somewhere in far far distant place, somewhere in...Sweden :)

So, instead of being a "Stridsvagn" (Battle Vehicle, in a literal translation), I hence baptize it as a "Guldsökervagn" (Gold Searching Vehicle,
in a way more than liberal translation made by yours trully ).

Now you get the IKEA part of the title: Its all about giving ordinary stuff strange and hard to pronounce names  ;D

Anyway, the detailing of vehicle is pretty much done, along with the hydraulic cabling, made with some electrical wire with the metal core removed,

And with some basic "terraforming" added:

And with some vegetation and base color:

Ready for painting.

Thanks for watching!

"Guldsökervagn"... as I'd said: you're nuts!  ;)

I love it!

Without trying to sound like I'm a*kissing, each time you put up a thread, I get insanely jealous because you've thought up the most amazingly simple but yet complex scratch builds I've seen on almost any subject using the most mundane of everyday items.
I've never seen anyone use an old tape dispenser or an old razor like you have.
Your kind of like the Willy Wonka of modelling really aren't you - all those weird and crazy but amazing creations to come off your work bench. It must be like Wonderland in your man cave...
Title: Re: When Caterpillar meets IKEA

Hi folks.

Thanks for the nice words.

My man cave is unfortunately that romantic. Just a plain room with a desk on a corner, with some modelling stuff on it :)

But with Christmas aroudn the corner, I have to  hurry up...

Some primer applied:

And the base color
(http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz158/AARSOBRAL/Grua/grua-042.jpg)

With some details already painted:

Painting the electrical wire jacket is a royal pain in the neck. The bloody paint keeps coming off :(
I should have used thick soldering wire.

Painting in process. Please wait..... :)

Hi guys

I hope you all had a good Christmas time (or the equivalent :) ).

Here the project has advanced, with some more paiting and decals...

Thanks!

And this one is also finished.

Some minor scratches done with acrylics and a few oils to give it a battered look did the trick :)
