Hi,
I'm very new here. Jeffry Fontaine showed me this site the other day and I thought I would share a thing or two.
I am an industrial designer in the theatre industry, but also make toys and miniatures, as well as the odd private commission. I am a dead keen 3D modeler and 3D printer with 2 machines at home. I have a pretty crappy online presence, and almost never upload anything to anywhere, so forgive me for any internet faux pas, periods of silence, or not understanding acronyms.
Anyway, I have had an idea in my head for some time about a hydraulic powered walker that I would like to make, and it was only after seeing this site that I decided to start creating something physical. I imagine it would be designed to walk around in swamps, so would be spider like, with the capsule able to be lowered into the water. Rusty, dirty, old, Victorian era iron work maybe, but probably not steam powered... kind of a walking submersable
I had taken many photos around the place of hydraulic machinery, and started sketching a mash up of bits. I then drew it up on the computer and roughed out the movement arcs and overall sizes and proportions. I then made a basic block model in Solidworks. I decided that the whole thing looked too heavy for something that was meant to be walking around in a swamp, so made the arm segments into riveted trusses.
I don't really know what I am going to do for feet, instead of getting too bogged down in details, I just went ahead and started making them... Also, once the legs are made, the size and shape of the pilot capsule should be easier to determine.

Then I prepped the individual parts and started printing them.
I figured out the longest and shortest lengths of the different linear actuators and modeled up a selection and printed those too.
Over a week I managed to mostly finish six legs, which is a pretty good start.

Liking very much, looking forward to this progressing
-
I only count 5 legs but I'll believe you've done 6. ;)
Now, where'd I put that knitting? :icon_crap:
PS: Welcome aboard, Taikonaught! :)
-
Dude, that's awesome.
You will fit in just fine around here.
Welcome aboard.

That looks great! What scale is it going to be in?
Is that a resin based printer? The results looks too smooth to be your typical FDM printer.
-
This is going to be interesting.....

How do you feel about doing some 1/48 Harrier Skyhook mounts?

Hi Dallas, glad to see you have joined our corner of the interweb. :)

Welcome aboard!!
this is spellbinding :)

What you have done is awesome. Can't wait to see the finished product.
I think this would be cool:

Thanks all for the kind words.
The scale is something like 1:48. I was a warhammer nerd as a kid and never really grew out of it, so when I think of models, I default to that scale.
That Harrier sky hook looks great. I'll make one for sure. Bug me about it later.
That spider thing is pretty cool, too. I might have to watch that film, despite hearing from a friend that it is amongst the worst films ever made.
I have done more work on my walker. I'll put some more pictures when I get to it, but for now, a screen shot of the main pod

I will try to dig some more drawings etc up for you.

I did a bit more before and after work...
