Title: F-16/79 - One real, another Whiff
Post by: Chris Payne on November 05, 2014, 03:49:29 AM
Hi guys.

Had a number of people interested in this one so thought I would share a few pics with the guys over here too.

Until now, no-one seemed to do a resin conversion set for the F-16 to build the one off F-16/79.

Recently Vingtor included the decals for the F-16/79 on its F-16 prototypes decal sheet, so I thought I would give it a go at making a resin conversion.

The first pics are of the real world model.

Hi Chris,

Welcome aboard.  Great work on the conversion and the models.  I understand the conversion is 1/72 - is that correct?  If so, is there any chance of also offering a 1/48 conversion for the same?

Kind regards,

Greg

I have given some thought to doing this in 1/48 as well but could prove to be quite expensive, though not impossible.

Definitely one for me to think about.

How long did they take??

Not long, once I made the conversion set.

The set itself took a few weeks to get right.

The kit itself with the conversion goes together pretty quickly.

I had the Nigerian one built, painted and decalled in under 2 weeks.

Always wondered what happened to this project, seemed a silly idea at the time.

Excellent work on both models Chris, the Nigerian Whiff is very cool 8) 8)

Not yet available for sale and no price as yet as I need to build up a bit of stock before I can offer it for sale.

Well, they wanted a variant that could be exported to countries they didn't want to sell the latest/greates tech of the F100 engine to; so this came about.  I received a spot of questioning for suggesting, at the time, in AW&ST that an afterburning TF41 made rather more sense.

That wouldn't have been a bad stretch Elmayerle an afterburning TF-41, I mean the TF-41 was based on the RR Spey and there were afterburning Speys.

Allison tested an afterburning TF41 at AEDC in 1967 with a reheat thrust of 26.000 lb.; it was quite possible and, given that the PRC already had a Spey 202 license, it would've been eminently reasonable for sale to the ROC.  That you'd get a smaller weight increase while not losing any thrust was just an extra benefit.  It's amusing, really, GD accused Allison of planting that letter in AW&ST and they interviewed me to verify that it wasn't a plant.  I still wish an afterburning TF41 had been developed, after the F401 was killed by a "Congress-critter" on the grounds that "the TF30 is good enough", it would've been nice to be able to substitute an afterburning TF41 for the problem-plagued TF30 (for those interested, I can go into more detail in a PM about this "person", who he was, and why I pure poison hate him, even though he's dead).

Those are some of the sharpest F-16s I've ever seen!

They appear absolutely flawless! Most excellent!

Welcome to BTS, I look forward to seeing more of your wonderful work!
