Title: Pegasus 1/350 scale Luna
Post by: Frank3k on September 09, 2014, 01:17:19 AM
This is the second release (the first was in 1/144) of the "Luna" spaceship from Destination Moon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destination_Moon_%28film%29).
It's in 1/350 scale and would normally go together well with no major issues.
My version did have issues; I clamped the fuselage and wings together...and about a minute later, the Luna squirted out of the clamp and flew into a wall. The sharp pointed end was squashed and one of the wings dented, so that accident pretty much doubled the construction/repair time.
The ship is painted with Testors MM Metalizer Aluminum and the doors and control surfaces are highlighted/shadowed with Vallejo dark gray wash.

I made a quick guesstimate of the rung size and spacing of the 8 story high ladder and thought about using a PE ladder in its place, but that would have been beyond my skills and patience in this scale. Instead I made a decal, but that didn't look quite right on the model, so I decided to make the Luna in flight:

In the movie, they mentioned that they landed in the crater Harpalus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpalus_%28crater%29). During the decent, Mare Imbrium, Mare Frigoris and the crater Plato are clearly seen, so it wasn't too hard to find a modern view of the area.

I printed the lunar image and glued it to a CD cover, but unfortunately, I had to cut Plato out of the picture:

Harpalus is the largest crater below the landing leg; the arc of the red stabilizing leg point to it. The CD case adds plenty of stability. I added a title as well:

Edited version of the above:

I may try to make the ladder decal on my Alps and use the aluminum ink instead of black.

Beautiful!!  Considering he consulted on that movie, I'm sure RAH would applaud this effort.

Congratulations!

The original base and the dramatic pose make all the difference in enhancing even more the already cool model!
