Title: Airspeed Oxford Ideas and Inspiration
Post by: GTX_Admin on December 21, 2013, 03:14:22 AM
Never really thought much of the Airspeed Oxford.  Always pictured it as the sedate training aircraft this image shows:

Until I came across this earlier this week:

It is a Airspeed Consul of the Union of Burma Air Force from the late 1940s …wow!!!

Nice find, but what's the story about the Avro Tudor in the background -------- (tail dragger to boot)  ?

That's the Type 689 Tudor 9/706 Ashton prototype.

Right, I meant Ashton --  :-X

It would suggest the photo was taken somewhere in England -- Farnborough perhaps ?

According to Airspeed Aircraft since 1931, the armament fit was tested at
A&AEE Boscombe Down in the autumn of 1949.

Armament consisted of two fixed forward-firing .303, eight 25lb. RP and a rear
gun turret.

All AS.65 Consuls were rebuilt AS.10 Oxfords.

Sorely tempted to try to build one.

BTW from all accounts the Oxford was anything but sedate.  :icon_fsm:
