Hi guys
I was perusing the shelves of my LHS the other day and I came across this new looking kit from (of all companies) Bandai.

It is the self described Astro Battleship/Carrier from the Space Battle Ship Yamato 2199 series. It looks much better than some of the earlier Yamato series ships. I was quite drawn to the sleek lines of this ship and it's almost how I would envision a space carrier to look like
I am currently thinking up ways to detail it up and of course light it. The carrier deck looks easy enough to light, but the engines look quite challenging to say the least
It comes with another 2 ships - for which I have no idea of their use let alone type. I'm sure an avid fan of the series would be able to tell me...
First up, the parts:

this will be the version I'll do:
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/madhatta/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_2966_zps383ae598.jpg) (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/madhatta/media/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_2966_zps383ae598.jpg.html)
Not sure when I'll start it though.
As I said, I'm not normally into this kind of sci-fi, but I really like the design of this ship.
It was a little bit expensive though - $69.99 AU but I think it'll make a worthy subject. I might do a WIP if anyone is interested.
Let me know what you think if this ship - good or bad :)

Wow! I am jealous!
-
Wow! I am jealous!
Same, that looks awesome!!!!
-
WOW,,, and looks like could be built/displayed/treated as a water ship, not space ship. :)
1/700 scale kit would be nice.
Appreciate you having ruler in pictures :))
-
your right - it could be displayed that way., but that would kinda detract from the whole point of it really :)
However, I do agree that 1/700 would be nice - and so would 1/350! >:D
-
I'm tempted to ask why it would need a 'flight' deck if it was operating in space, but that would be a tad JMN-ish. :)
Sure looks impressive though.
-
"JMN-ish"?
-
"JMN-ish"?
Perhaps that hasn't come across from the WhatIf site.
'JMN' = Joyless Modelling Numpty (or other suitable last expletive....) and means those who just don't GET our kind of modelling. In the model railway world in the UK they're called 'Rivet Counters'.
Two years ago at Telford I saw and heard a classic JMN who was examining my B777-900 (which is 1/144 scale and just over 3 ft long). He bent down to read the backstory while shaking his head, got half way through and stood up, exclaiming 'That's stupid, just STUPID!' :)
RESULT! ;)
-
I think its a lot better than the original kit, which to be fair is over thirty years old... The two mini-ships are, ( I think - this is
memory from some odd years ago as an anime' fan. ) a bomber - the long=winged twin carries something called a "Drill Missile"
which I think is specifically designed to plug into the bow of the Yamato and foul up its Wave motion gun. The more discoid craft is
the 'Smite' Ship (Space Matter Something Transport Something...though that may come from the American "Starblazers" adaptation.
-
That kit looks like a lot of fun and I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with it, Madhatter!

Ahh - now I get you. Yes, have had my fair share of those before. Like you, I quite enjoy winding those guys up - they just can't comprehend WIF's or imagination of any kind outside of what it currently on the flight line. I love watching their little heads explode when a panel line is out by 5 degrees... ;D
I have found out through other forums that this is one of the "bad" guys ships - which is fine by me. I really need to watch this new series of 2199. I haven't even seen the movie yet - must find that one somewhere. Somehow, I don't think the local Video EZY will have that one in stock..
-
..... from (of all companies) Bandai.
I can't even begin to imagine who else would kit this subject !
That one on the white sprue looks kinda Cylon-ish (hint ! >:D )
The rest looks very intriguing ! but rather expensive ! (will look at HobbyEasy's price ;) )
-
LOL - yeah I should explain myself there. Before I bought this kit and realised that Bandai made these and other such kit subjects, I only previously thought Bandai made toys - not models.
I live a very shallow modelling life really don't I? :-[

I have made a small start on this tonight by marking out where I am going to be cutting out unnecessary plastic which in turn will facilitate the carrier deck lighting. Once I have actually cut it out etc, I'll start posting pics. I need to try and work out how the heck I'm going to get the intake lighting to work! Looking at the box art and some pics I found online, I need the light to not just come out the hole in the front but to appear to emanate from the sides. I have no idea on how that will work.
As for other ideas, I'm going to drop the deck lift on the front left hand side to be on the lower hangar (currently molded up top) and scratch up some hangar detail on both sides. I'll try and get some fiber optics in there as well to add some interest.
Looks like I'll need to start stocking up on some 1/700 and 1/1200 ships kits again. Fortunately, I still have 30 feet of optic left over but will need to buy some more LEDs and SMDs of different colors.
I'm also going to try and get s spotlight effect on the bow and midships lettering. That's where SMD's will come in handy I think.
I've been looking at the bridge with a none-to-small level of skepticism - the "windows" are tiny and oddly shaped and just adding fibers won't cut it. I'm thinking I may need to recast the entire bridge section in a frosted clear resin and add a light inside that while masking only the windows. I'm going to ask some guys in my club if they do clear resin casting - or at least know of anyone who does. It seems I may be better learning how to do this myself I think.
I've just literally had a thought - as I have been writing, it has occurred to me that the frosted clear resin idea also could be the answer to the intake lighting issue as well. Hmmmm - I will ponder this idea a bit more I think.....

Let me suggest you look for some lightning gels. They come in many many different colors ,textures and types. Some can be used to defuse light as well, like the engines of Han Solo's ship. You should be able to find some at any good camera shoppe. If you live in a large city, look for a shop that sells or rent stage lighting. Hope this is of some help to you.
-
Lighting gels huh? I've never heard of it until now. I'll have to Google it to see how it works
Thanks for the suggestion!

Clear resins can be difficult to deal with. They can require high temperatures (50C or so) or are more hazardous than regular resin, or require vacuum casting to eliminate bubbles. There are some clear resins that are fairly easy to work with, but they never quite harden. To add to the fun, some clear resins do not like platinum cure silicones and unless you really search, you'll end up with a gooey mess that never quite solidifies.
My favorite material is clear acrylic powder that uses a monomer to solidify. It's commonly used by women to repair acrylic fingernails. The main disadvantage is the cost, but the material works well with styrene and can be polished and dyed.
-
Lighting gels are nothing more than sheets of colored material. At least some are there are many different kinds for different purposes. You get the same effect by using typing paper strips to defuse the light for the engines on a Malium Falcon. Gels change the light. They can change colors, add texture ,things like that even reflect light back. They are used in stage lighting ,often for color.
BTW, I was looking at the Spaceship Modeler website and found there is a whole series of these kits from all sides. They are a bit pricy but that is mitigated by the fact they all have several ships. I must say you have temped me greatly with these kits. While I've not seen the series they are from but I have always been a fan of the old Starblazers/ Starship Yamato series and I wish I could watch them today
-
OK - I might just have to look into that - thank you! :D
Well, I have been very slowly plugging away at this. Most of my time has been spent cutting and chopping, but I have managed to get the carrier deck lighting installed and have started to scratch build the small bay below the deck. I have cut the elevator from the top deck and placed it down below - I thought that looked more like what it's supposed to be - otherwise it would just blend in with the deck.
Forgive the poor photos - I only get to photograph when it's night time and I don't have the correct temperature lights yet. However, you'll get the idea:

Well my friend I might be able to help you out. I picked up some sample packets of different kind of gels and other filters many years ago when I was putting on conventions and shows. They aren't very big but if your interested PM me with your address and I can send you some.
-
thankyou ;) - PM sent
The bay is now finished. I've tried to make it look bigger than what it is by creating layers. The whole area is only 4cm long by 1.5cm deep. I was going to add roof lighting but then I realise that the carrier deck sits right on top of that roof, so I would be able to sit it on top of the fibers, so I had to ditch that idea. I'm thinking I might add some floor lighting to the area by the elevator, but I'm not to sure it'll be worth it. Once the roof goes on, you can't see much of this area anyway. I haven't gone crazy with the painting because as I said, you won't see much of this once the roof goes on, so it would be a waste of time to detail paint it.

Time to keep plugging away at this. Not sure what will be the next update yet. Might look at the other bay to see what I can do with that one :D

Did the bay details come with the kit or did you make them ? After seeing your kit, I'm wanting to get one from that serie. Maybe for Christmas. I just bought a bunch from Squadron and blew my modeling budget there with this past week's sale.
-
no - none of the details come with the kit - they are all my own additions using parts from 1/700 and 1/1200 scale ship kits, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, 0.60, and 0.100 strip styrene
I have never watched the series either, but I really like the design of this particular ship. Not sure what it is exactly that I like, but I do :D
-
It's the heavy carrier of the bad guys. They were always getting blown up in the episodes I've seen. They had another ship that was a destroyer,I think, that the crews all wore red shirts ! LOL! They blew up bunches in every episode !
-
These modifications are top notch!! As someone who hopes to make similar large space vessels I'm taking notes!
-
I am, of course, watching with great interest.
And stealing with my eyes. Yes I am.
I think your mods may give me good ideas for airships, yes I do.

thank you very much fellas - glad you like what you see so far
Very quick update to prove I am still working on this. Most of my time has been cutting, chopping and cutting some more just to make room for the electronics. It is such a tight fit as it is without my clumsy work trying to be packed in there. I have been asking myself why I bother to light things up sometimes when OOB with some external details would have sufficed. I am a glutton for punishment

the cuts in the midships area:

Opens up quite nicely and this area will house the main power inlet:

I am now waiting for my pink LEDS to come in the mail, so one they're in that should be about it. I am trying to make it so the carrier deck can it on last, so hopefully, it'll work
I have all the components individually wired up to plugs and all will plug into a modified ribbon cable clamp.

Also as a first for me, I have just bought myself a flasher board from a nice fellow over at BM. Never used one before, but he has programmed it for me so that's one less things I need to worry about - and it's small!!
Anyway, that's all I've done, but hopefully, things will pick up soon
Till then

That's amazing, totally amazing. :)
I just took a look back through the thread and one of the sprues looks as if it's moulded in dark grey AND yellow and red as well! How do they do that????

It's a multi-shot injection molding process with two (or more) feeders for the plastic. They can inject the plastics at the same time through different ports or use a gate in the mold control which part of the mold gets the plastic. They inject one color, open the gate and inject the next one. Trumpeter does this with some of their 1/350 planes, with the clear canopy parts on the same sprue as the opaque airplane bits.
-
Pretty darned impressive, thanks for the explanation.
Can you imagine what Matchbox would have done had they had the same technology? EVERY part would have been a different colour!!! ???
-
Bandi has used this for years on its Gundum kits. And yes, some of the sprues do look like that. LOL !!!
-
Impressive indeed. :o
So fine - over the top - too good - etc.... :-*
More power to you. Keep posting progress pictures.
-
thanks fellas
The multi colored plastic is ok but reminds me of old Airfix kits - and some of those are not good memories.
Just tidying up the electronics int he front section and will hopefully begin to assemble the main hull soon and then onto the best part - detailing :)
Pics once I have something to show you :D

I did a quick lighting test and it seems my concerns about illuminating the sides is unfounded. It looks good to me. Lots of digging and cutting was performed to get the LED's in there. Might prove to be a challenge getting everything else to go together though....
I took the opportunity to snap some pics while I thought of it:

Looks damn fine to me.

quick update - have made the smaller hangar bay - or what ever it's meant to be. Nothing glued in yet as I'm still putting together the electronic parts, but I should be finished that soon

Impressive :-*
The more pictures you post the more I'm inclined to switch to OOB, prepainted, snap together kits, and call it good !

thanks bro - although what I am doing isn't anything anyone else can do ;)
Time for yet another update
I have got the forward section finished and ready to paint.

Everything is wired up and ready to plug 'n go. I finished wiring up the power socket and will begin making a stand for it tonight.
Normally, these kinds of things are attached permanently to a stand, but this time I took a different route. I've done it so I can just simply unplug it and it's ready for transport.
The power supply will be a 9V underneath the base
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/madhatta/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_3134_zps4ccabf2b.jpg) (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/madhatta/media/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_3134_zps4ccabf2b.jpg.html)
As you can see, all the sections will be plugged into that modified ribbon connector which makes life so much easier.
I was asked recently by someone if I could take some pics of it with something recognisable for scale effect, so as asked:

And lastly, the rear nav lights are in place:

Well, that's all for now. Please feel free to comment - good, bad or indifferent.

And I thought I was nuts for wanting to detail 1/700 ship hangars! Some seriously fine detail work sir, keep it up! 8)
-
Your clean soldering, wire routing and use of connectors tells me you're an engineer or have a lot of experience with real world electronics...
The hangar bays look fantastic.
-
Another killer project and was really taken aback at how small the hull really is compared with the detail you are jamming in there... terrific work.
Really looking forward to this.
Have taken a few of your wiring tips onboard as well for future projects, using the modded ribbon cable connector is inspired.
Do you get your LED's from locally here in Aus ?
I use http://www.ledsales.com.au (http://www.ledsales.com.au) who appear to have a nice array of stuff.
Is the Galactica Finished ?

hey thanks for your kind posts guys - very much appreciated. I am posting the same WIP on another couple of forums but none of them are as engaging as this one, which makes it all the more worth while when people actually respond.
Frank, no I'm not an engineer of any kind. I'm actually a fraud investigator for a bank. I'm just applying some practice - that's all :)
Brian, I have bought LED's from Jaycar, and I recently purchased another 5 from them but choked at their prices. I mean, aside from me, who would pay $5.95 for a single 5 MM LED?!?!? I deserve the title of "perfect consumer - I'll pay what ever". When I got home that arvo, I went onto eBay to find my pink LED's and bought 10 of them for $1.80 and no postage coats from China - which is where they're all made anyway.
I also buy my pre-wired SMD's from the same store to for dirt cheap (20 SMD's for $15.27 & free postage). I have found another store that sells SMD's that isn't on eBay: http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/smd-chip-leds.html (http://www.modeltrainsoftware.com/smd-chip-leds.html)
The ribbon connector is an easy mod to do - I just laid down and soldered a section of LED leg across each side of the connections so that the electricity would run down the entire side of each polarity (-/+)
As for the Galactica - no, no where near finished. I haven't touched that for about 9 months now. I really should get my A into G and get it done, but I have just lost interest in it. I might get some mojo back to finish it after this. However, I am very excited about building the BR-52 loco after this, so maybe it'll have to wait until after that's done
I hope to have this done for Expo next year. I won't get to work on this much over the Xmas break as I'll be up north in NSW for 5 weeks but it should be do-able. Painting is going to be the greatest challenge as I am not 100% sure on what the correct colors for this are. I'm just going to wing it and see how it goes.
I'll update this again soon. I think I'll start detailing the front section now and decide on whether or not I close the 2 rear sections up now or wait until I have the pink LED's in hand first. I think I'll be able to get away with closing them up now and work within the tight confines of the section.

I'm just amazed at what you have done here. I've built several of those kit back when they first came out. They were wonderful kits but what you have done here is just overwhelming ! I confess,I had forgotten about how small a kit that is,myself. I'm very impressed with the tiny surface details you have added. That was something I never thought to do,myself. It just makes it that muck better. As for paint, I remember these ships being overall red, just like the boxart. The artwork was simple and solid colors prevailed for capital ships. The fighter craft were colorful however. I can't wait to see more on this you are doing an outstanding job.
-
Hey thanks for the kind post Ennis :-[
This is my fourth ship that I have detailed like this and this one is so far the 'cleanest' one I've done. By clean, I mean no visible glue marks. My first attempt was a Republic Venator, then the Cordoba from the Crusher Joe Anime series, then the Galactica (unfinished mind you) and now this. If you want to have a look at those, visit my photobucket account - they are all there :)
Well, I think that's quite enough self promotion for one thread.... :-[
-
OK, time for an update - it's been a while. My pink LED's arrived on Friday night, so I spent some time last night installing them. I couldn't do anything else until they arrived, but now things are moving along again.
The vents at the back there are actually painted Tamiya dark iron - not that you can really tell:

The carrier deck is now finished and painted. Hopefully, it;'s close enough to the correct color., I have sprayed some random replacement tiles around to break up the monotonous colour. And, even though it's hard to see, there are subtle variations to the base colour to add effect

As always, thanks for stopping in

...and back to normal programming.
Great update Simon. Love your work with fibre optics, something I am still yet to try.
-
Yeah this thread is full of great things ............ :-*
Any chance of a wiring diagram for dummies ?
No, real dummies. I mean I know that electrical cables and stuff are like pipes, bigger cables mean more sparky stuff comes out.
And that extension cords have two different end so that you can't plug the wrong end in.
So a simple diagram would be a wonderous thing of sciencey goodness .... and theres so much I'd love to try this on :D
-
hey guys
Thanks very much fellas - your feedback is greatly appreciated.
Brian, Fiber Optics are so simple bro - you can't really go wrong. They are just fiddly at times. All you need is a #80 drill bit and some 0.264mm optical thread. I have quite a bit, but if you want to try some, email Paul at the fiber optics shop and he'll send you a sample bag. You get all the different sizes and I have gotten a bag just for a small length to finish off a project :D

Well, may as well add some pics of where I am up to as of now. Spent quite a while yesterday filling in large seams and gaps. I have been using the tried and true method of filling in the gap with putty, letting it dry, then rubbing a cotton bud (Q-Tip for the non Australians) soaked in nail polish remover. Best way ever to achieve a a smooth surface without loosing surface detail:

I'd searched before but many years ago and the info around now is much much better.
I like the look of flexible Led lighting strips ..... they'd be great for my space hulk corridors.

thanks Brian :)
Well, it continues on with the start of the hull detailing. I'll try do some more tonight but after that, I am away for 3 weeks, so this will more than likely be the last update for this year - unless I do some serious work on it tonight and achieve something worth while taking and posting pics of.

It is quite tedious cutting into thirds lengthways a strip of .10 x .20 styrene which is why my updates are so minimal most of the time. Still, the effect I get from it is very pleasing to my eyes, so I keep on going.
Anyways, as always, please feel free to critique or comment
Till next time

thanks mate :)
right side is now finished and have made a start on the left. Both sides will be as busy as each other. Unfortunately, this is as far as I will now get for the remainder of the year as I leave to go on holidays tomorrow morning.
Thanks for tuning in guys and have a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous new year!
Kind regards

The insect-like looking thing in the middle is only the start - it won't continue to look like that by the time I'm finished with it.
Will update again soon. Am about to start on the superstructure now but that'll be easy compared with the rest of the ship :)
See you all soon

that is some fine work.. right there.
The photos do not really show the relative size of this kit, but from what I recall, it is not that big.
Underpaint, this should look magic
-
thanks Brian :)
I'll shoot a pic with something recognisable for scale effect shortly
-
OK, here you Brian (and everyone else)
This was all I could find that should be universally known:

:)

It is actually bigger than I thought. I was sort of under the impression it was one of those tiddler ships, about 15cm long.
Good to see it in context though.
-
Tooooo crisp, clean, detailed to be that small.
Congrats - dunno how you build so small so well. :)
-
thanks guys
Yeah, it is bigger than I thought it would be too - which I am happy about
Well, the detailing is pretty much all finished now - just need to get the final lighting installed and have the bridge section cast in frosted clear resin to help with the lighting. It's this part that will take a while - at least a month - which is when I envision I'll get it back. Once I have it, it'll be installed and then the paint work can be finished. I'm going to make a start on the hull as soon as the weather settles down a bit and isn't so bloody hot - my shed is like a furnace at the moment.
So, on to the final detailing shots. This may need to come in 2 parts as I have a fair few photos to post. First up: the "super Structure" (for lack of a better term)

Till then, thanks for stopping in

Awesome piece of work: the micro detailing is a nice change from the usual "cover it in greeblies" approach, and the lighting work is fascinating. Excellent project! :)
-
Thanks Weaver :)
Some of these parts are so small that I think they'll get lost in the paint work, but they do add somewhat to the texture of the surface - which is the whole point I guess.
Speaking of painting, the idea I have in mind for this is gonna take a long time I think.
-
I'm with Weaver; I really like the microscopic surface details. They give a better sense of scale and purpose than random bits from other model kits.
-
Thanks Frank :)
As I thought, the smaller, thinner gray pieces have mostly vanished under the black light blocking layer of paint. They are barely perceptible but can be seen when looking up close
I'll post some pics shortly so you can see what I mean
-
Seeing it all tie up here is great.
Best of luck with the clear resin it is not the easiest beast to tame.
-
Greetings all
I have started the painting and finally finished the tedious task of masking of the replacement panels. This took quite a while but I think it'll be worth it in the end.
Forgive the bad photos - it was late and I took them more for my own reference so I know where I placed them.

...... for my own reference so I know where I placed them.
Great idea, from personal experience there is nothing like seeing two pieces of unremoved masking still on a model.. 8 seconds before judging... probably nobody will notice.. but that is not the point.
This is just looking better and better.. really hanging out for the end result.

Got one of the last pieces of electrical work left to be done finished tonight, so am quite happy about that:
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/madhatta/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4288_zps12783ca4.jpg) (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/madhatta/media/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4288_zps12783ca4.jpg.html)
But (very surprisingly) what I'm most happy with so far is the paint work. It has come out so much better than I hoped it would. I normally suck at painting, but this is really working for me for once!
Sneak peak of what it'll look like before a gloss coat, wash and weather and then the matte coat.

Anyways, thanks for watching

OK, I'm going to post some pics for some honest feedback here. I am trying to emulate what it would have looked like after spending so much time dormant in the scrap pile (from my VERY limited knowledge, this ship was brought out of the junk pile to fight again)
Please let me know if it looks crap or is fitting. If it never ever looked like that, please tell me so I can strip it back and repaint it.I want it to look like it hasn't been used in years and has seen a lot of previous action:

As I said, I would appreciate honest feedback as I have only seen snippets of this show and even then the ship appears for a few seconds and then it's gone.
To much weathering or not enough?
Cheers

Given the scale you are working.. I would be holding it right there. To my eye you have done it perfectly.
All in all that is terrific.. loving it.
-
I'm with Buzz - to my eye it looks pretty good. How about a longer shot, with something this size (length not scale lol) it's often more about the impression of the whole that'll tell you whether it's what you had in mind or not.
And a question on the lighting - how'd you keep the tips of the fibre optics clear from the paint or doesn't it matter?
btw - awesome detailing - micro masking - sheesh !!!!!!
Brent

thanks fellas. I have received some good news from a reliable source that what I have done is quite within the realms of what this ship is capable of, so I'm pretty happy about that
Queeg, thanks very much mate:) And to answer your question, you don't take paint off a Fiber thread, you leave it protruding from the surface when installing them and cut them off once the last clear coat has been applied - no way you could scrape paint off a thread without going cross-eyed :-\
I'll take full views of it once it's done and dusted - which could still be a small way off yet as I am still waiting for the bridge to be cast in clear resin.
I can't do anything else now until it's done....actually, that's not true - I still have the final electronics to do and I have to make a stand and base for it as well. So I'll be busy with that over the next couple of weeks I guess :D

Makes sense. You'd still have to be pretty steady trimming them up close to the paint, not a job for the faint hearted lol
I'd love to have ago at lighting something one day .........

Hi all
Well, I guess I wasn't as close to finishing this as I thought. The base is turning out to be a complete model on it's own. Not opting for a simple stand and base, I have gone for something more interesting - well, hopefully.
First up, I have found a good use for all those ship superstructure plates I have from all the ship models I have scavenged from. They make great buildings!

Of course, the base needs defending, so I am attempting to scratch up some wicked looking guns. I'll add stuff to them to make them look bulkier and meaner.

Everything is in its infant stage with so much more detail to add, but I thought I'd share what I have in mind.
Cheers

Well that should work up just nicely. I like bases like that.
I had considered putting the Airship Carrier onto a mooring mast.. but the physics of holding up there got too hard
-
can I offer one suggestion if its not too late? All the structures on your base appear to be parallel to the edges of the base. If you angle them just a few degrees it will make for a better display.
-
damn - I've already glued the buildings in place, otherwise I would have actually done what you suggested. It just didn't occur to me to angle the buildings like that. The ship will be angled though, so hopefully that will help counter the symmetry a bit.
Good call though - thanks :)

Greetings all
I have started to detail the base now and it appears that what I have in my head will actually work.
I have also slightly adjusted the base a little to include service tunnels - mostly to add more depth to the base.

you can just see the added surface detail i have been adding to the channels. They'll be much more noticeable once they're painted and washed:

and some plant machinery (well, the start anyway):

This should make it so the buildings don't look so perpendicular to the edges of the base - well, at least distract the eye a little from the fact they are.
I am also trialling something a little different for a light effect. If it works I'll post some pics
Anyways, must be off, I still have plenty more to go.
Thanks for looking

Wheather thatz an engine, HVAC, a space still, ray beam power unit, or what - it is looking right.

you are the greeble king! ;)

I'm loving all of the ship parts I'm seeing in this! Wonderful use of extra parts. Keep it up 8)

thanks guys :) your kind posts are greatly appreciated.
I'm slowly plugging away at it, but need to put my foot down if I am to make Melbourne Expo. So much work to do and not enough time!

Channels on the base? Haven't they heard what happened to the Death Star? :P
Love this build! The base is going to look great, too! :)
I wonder how a spaceship like this would look as a regular ship? Cut it off at a waterline of choice, put it on a sea display, arm it with all kinds of "warshippy" stuff (AEGIS panels, Phalanx, Harpoons, the works), put some JSFs, Harriers, Ospreys or other helos on it....
-
... but need to put my foot down if I am to make Melbourne Expo. So much work to do and not enough time!
Bah.. according the Expo Website you have 98 days :o :o :o
hang on... now I need to get a wriggle on as well.
Really looking forward to seeing it there as this is an all round sensational build

Only a little over 3 months huh?! Man am I screwed. I work at the speed of evolution so 3 months is like saying its next week for me ;)
I'll get it done though , just hopefully not loosing any "quality" whilst I speed through it.

hi guys
Been slowly plodding away at this. I have scratched up my own guns to go on the base a defenses

I have pretty much finished detailing the bit on the bottom of the base and have just started spraying the top part of the base. Will try to finish detailing the buildings tonight and from there it's on the that last part of it all and that is putting it all together
I've attached the carrier deck to the ship but I am still waiting to get the bridge section cast for me (I haven't seen the bloke who does it yet - been 2 months and a no show each time)
I'll post some more pics of the base soon
Cheers

Excellent build on those guns. They are cool 8)

Just loving this build

thanks guys. Wait til you see the plates - I've just finished spraying them a custom mix of Alclad and man they look good. Really happy with how they've turned out. The channels will off set it nicely I think :)
Once they've dried, I'll take some pics with it all together

Just loving this build

I concur with you guys .

thanks guys - glad your enjoying it :)
Well, it's update time, and here is where I am currently at.
I have finished the first of the buildings and the guns are both painted. One of which is now attached to the first building. If these guns were real, man, they would be massive! But I think they look way cool none the less. I have also reduced the amount of fibers I had because it didn't look right and I thought it needed to be a bit more spacely set out. Lighting pics later:

I have started to do the second building now and so far so good. I changed the mast design I had originally to this much better looking one now. I found some 1/35 iron telegraph poles mae by Miniart and they were the perfect (well, almost - had to jig it a little) size to go over the inside pole which hides the power cables to the ship and holds the plug which it sits on. I think they look rather good, so I'm keeping it. I wanted an industrial look and I think I got it.

I have also finished "the pit". I wanted it to look grimy and dirty - a start contrast to the plates on the top level that the buildings sit on. However, painting is not my strong suite, so I may not have done it too convincingly. Its the second time I have ever used MIG pigments (a good practice run for my upcoming BR52 build later on). Sorry for the slightly blurry pic

And Ii thought I would try something a little different here. I bent a 5mm Fiber Optic thread, painted the bottom silver, wrapped some very thin strips of masking tape around the thread, then over that sprayed black then Iron to try and achieve a sci-fi looking energy pipe. I hope you can see it. Once the final photos are taken ytou should. It's one of those things you may or may not see - depends if your looking for it I guess:
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/madhatta/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4446_zps608c5ff1.jpg) (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/madhatta/media/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4446_zps608c5ff1.jpg.html)
And last but not least, the top plate. The blue service channels off set the metallic paint quite nicely I think: I will be adding more pipes and some other smaller structures to the plates as well - I just haven't got those parts yet. I have made my own pipes though that will feed from "the pit" to the mast. Don't ask me what function they would have 'coz I have no idea - Ii am just because I think it'll look cool
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee380/madhatta/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4449_zpsec735e07.jpg) (http://s1224.photobucket.com/user/madhatta/media/Space%20Battle%20Carrier%20Darold/IMG_4449_zpsec735e07.jpg.html)
Well, that's all for now. Need to finish off the second building. Once that's painted and dried, both buildings will be set onto the plates then onto the base. The ship itself is almost finished - just need to get that bloody bridge section cast and the guns painted then I can call it done!
As always, if you have any feedback - good or bad - please feel free to post
Cheers

Greetings all
I am almost finished the base now – just a few things to tidy up, mostly just the edging.
I decided to plug everything in tonight to see how it looks, and I am pretty darn happy with myself. It’s come out really well – not too bright – just right. I am also glad I reduced the number of Fiber threads in the buildings – the effect is now just right. I had to spray the surface another colour because the Alclad scratched off a lot and it was looking pretty crap, so I have gone with a light gray and I am happy with the result.
The ship is finished bar the bridge section which is being cast in clear – so I should get that back in a couple of weeks. I also plugged that into the base and it works a treat. Pics of that part soon. In the meantime, I took some pics of the base so you can see what you think:

Wow, just wow

Amazing build! Even the tape looks good...
-
Thanks fellas
Not to far away from the finish line now. Just a few more touches and I'm calling it done! :)
-
Masterfull.. just terrific.
With the contrasting colours..this should just Pop up and go... HERE I AM !!!!!
-
thanks Brian
I hope so too- I chose a different colored LED for the masted building for that exact reason - contrast.
Not far now till it's finished - just waiting for the paint to dry on a couple of things then the base will be done and once the bridge comes in a couple of weeks, the ship'll be done too! Yay!
I just finished building the "pit" surround today and still requires painting, but I hope it'll look good in the colors I have in mind for it :)
Will post more either tomorrow or later in the week at completion.
Thanks again
Oh, while I think of it, this'll be an upcoming project: http://www.fantastic-plastic.com/PrometheusCatalogPage.htm (http://www.fantastic-plastic.com/PrometheusCatalogPage.htm)
Everyone in line behind me..... :P ;D

Outstanding work my friend. Your posts never cease to amaze me. You are getting better and better. I found on ,YouTube a SpaceBattleship Yomatto 2199 video which shows the ship as the former bad guy leader using it as his flagship. The top deck flipped over to reveal the weapons underneath. Yours looks much better !
-
:-[ Thanks Ennis
Yeah, you have the option of having the deck guns flipped over but I prefer it as a deck - much more interesting
Well, the base is pretty much finished. The boarders are all on and look good (to me). I just need to spray on a flat coat, do a small amount of weathering to the pit surrounds and I’m calling it done.
I’ve been playing with the camera settings and I have finally got some decently exposed pics - all in focus (yay). These will be more evident in the upcoming ship shots I took tonight
First up, the base:

Thanks Brian
Im sorry for my delay in replying to you. Haven't done much web surfing lately.
I received my clear cast bridge on Tuesday night and it came out nicely. I was given two of them, but each one was unusable in its full form. One had a mark in the windows and the other had the tail snapped. So, I cut the front off the one with the snapped tail as it had the best front and cut the original pay in half in order for me to fuse the two sections together. It worked!
I'm waiting for the glue to dry and once it's dried, I will start painting.
I had too spend a large amount of time cutting individual masks out for each window and each window is 1mm wide. It was not fun. Because I don't trust the tapes holding power, I have given it a coat f future over the top to hold it in place and to prevent seepage. Hopefully, it works.
I would have had some pics to add but the camera batteries are both flat thanks to me leaving it switched on all night recently. I'll add the last WIP shots in together with the final pics which will be hopefully posted this weekend.
Till then

The Gamillian Empire was expanding aggressively, conquering low tech worlds and at the same time were fighting off a massive invasion from the Andromeda galaxy. They expanded much too fast and used too much force leaving them seriously overstretched and facing wide spread rebellion across their holdings. Eventually, the Empire began to crumble from within with the head of the Navy about to overthrow the Emperor in an attempt to make a much less fascist nation. By then though much too late to hold the Empire together.
On the Lesser Magellanic Cloud battlefront, Gamilla's forces were at their lowest. The last of the Gelvades Class Battle Carriers - the Shinigami was being patched back together for it's last fight at an old and once abandoned defense outpost. The ship that, while relatively 'new' in service, had seen so much action it was held together with duct tape and hope, facing an enemy they are gradually losing to in defense of an Empire that was falling apart several thousand light years away.....

Well, that's it. There are some decals to place on the deck, but they can wait and you won't notice the difference. The only sore point I have is the deck lighting isn't as strong as I would like it to have been brighter but at the same time, it also kind of works in my favor by staying in scale.
That's all for sci-fi from me for a little while - I have commenced my build of the mighty Trumpeter 1/35 BR-52 which will no doubt take me a VERY long time. After that, who knows - I may just come back with another of these fantastic Bandai 2199 kits - like the Dread Naught, Battleship or flagship. I haven't made up my mind yet :)
Thanks for watching everyone
See you around the boards

Je suis Gob smacked.
Great work and all around unbelievable attention to detail. Photoshop in a background and I'm sure the you'll get a call from Japan.

I've never watched this anime, but that is just a beautiful model. I took the liberty to do a quick photo-chop of it in front of the Small Magellanic Cloud:

Fantastic sir! Fan-bloody-tastic!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks very much guys - I'm glad you like it. I have to admit, I am rather pleased with how it turned out. Now to see how well it goes in Melbourne Expo in a couple of months!

Nothing more to say then echo all the above.
How will it go... well I pretty sure it will do fairly well in its home Sci Fi category guaging against previous entries over the years.
This is at least equivelent if not a tad better than your Venator Destroyer that cleaned up a couple of years back.
-
thanks Brian - nice of you to say so :)
I think in sheer terms of detailing, the Venator has it over this one for sure. Especially in build hours and the amount of strip styrene used! ;D
-
Abso-bloody-lutely gorgeous, sir!! if you ever do scratchbuilding, I'd love to see you do a Honorverse warship.
-
This is an outstanding piece of work: I can't believe the amount of work you've put into the lighting, and I'd be proud to have made the base, never mind the ship. Hope ot gets what it deserves at Melbourne! :)
-
Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I'm going to have to google what a honoverse ship is when I get some free time. In the future, I am going to scratch build a starship instead of just detailing a normal kit, but that won't be for a long time yet. To many projects and not enough bench time!

To many projects and not enough bench time!
Ain't that the truth! I might need to start subcontracting/outsourcing my projects...

Honor-verse - the universe that goes with David Weber's mil-sf "Honor Harrington" series. If you catch his collection, House of Steel in a bookstore, it includes depictions of several ships of the main two 'good guy" powers. I freely admit to being a firm follower from the first book. Mind you, most of his other sf&f work, at least that published by Baen Books, is also highly recommended.
-
I'll have to keep an eye out for that series - I love a good SF book.
My Google searches on those ships has given me some perspective on what they should be like. I think I could build something like that.
I have a few ideas for a scratch build - just need to find the extraordinary amount of time and resources to devote to such an endeavor
-
I don't know if they all do but I do know that at least a couple of the books have illustrations at the front of the book.
However, I'm sure there are even more & better on the interwebnet.

THe model + diorama together multiply their beauty MH!
And add to this the great pictures you shot, the black bg is fantastic.
Bravo!

Looks great. Very nice work

THAT'S IT... I'm taking up knitting! :)
Simply wonderful work, it has just the right mix of "Tired, but still proud" to go with your backstory.
The deck lighting is subtle, but much more I think would remove the scale effect..
A thought for future works...
How about a small painted area around the deck lights, just a light wash to suggest the spread of the lights. The tiny point sources can't illuminate their surroundings the way a full scale light would, but maybe a tiny splash of paint could simulate that effect. Just a thought.
-
Thanks very much guys, :) I thought this build had past its use by date now.
It didn't do as well at Expo as I was hoping for, but to be honest, I'm not worried.
SilverFox, that's a great suggestion actually and one I'm going to take into account on the triple decked carrier which is my next project after the BR52. I'm also going to use larger fibers for the deck lighting so they throw out more light but yet stay in scale. Speaking of which, I need to order some shortly
Thanks again fellas
