Title: Royal Canadian Navy Skyraider
Post by: Gingie on December 20, 2012, 07:07:26 AM
Another oldie pulled from the depths of my PC: The RCN Skyraider. No backstory, other than it seemed a logical follow on from (or prehaps replacement for)  the Sea Fury. In fact, I think these are Mike Belcher's Sea Fury decals and maybe a spitfire spinner?

I tried a mottling effect with my airbrush, but can't see it on my laptop screen here. Maybe a better monitor would show it.  The oil staining is very thin layers of paint blown backwards with the airbrush. Engine exhaust staining was airbrushed on, and I tried to get the vertical ribbed effect seen on some Skyraiders. Those exhaust stains....a great example of adding a little more, a little more, a litt..aw crap, too much! Good reminder to spray, let it dry, come back to it 10 minutes later and evaluate the effect. Paint chips showed a bit more restraint, and were done with a silver berol prismacolour.

Hopefully you can see the mottled effect on the wing here:

Propeller spinners always make things look better!

Always nice to see a Skyraider in maple leaf markings.

A spinner was the one thing missing from an otherwise fine looking aircraft.  Fantastic job man, especially the weathering.  I'd say you nailed it!  Now you just need to make a base for it that looks like a section of deck from the Bonnie V  8)

Nice! I especially like the oil spattering on the belly drop tank  :)  The Skyraider would have made a good companion for the RCN's Avengers (maybe a Hunter/Killer thing?).

Over here in The Big City Of Ardrossan, we call work like your Skyraider "ridiculously good!"   IMHO, the exhaust stains are very believable but such things are in the eye of the beholder.  Your work with the Prismacolor is also just the right blend of subtle-yet-noticeable.  Great job!
