Title: 1/72 Westland Lysander Mk. IV(N) FAA
Post by: The Big Gimper on July 24, 2012, 01:18:09 AM
Folks:

For your perusal is my late 1945 Lysander Mk. IV(N) in FAA colours.

The Allied forces needed an aircraft to drop and pick up long range recon team members who worked with the coast watchers. Amphibians were used but a wheeled version was also required.

The Mk. III was selected as a base. An upgraded Mercury XXV engine with 1,200 HP, a 4 bladed propeller was installed. The center glazing was replaced with sheet metal for added strength to handle the violent Pacific Storms.  Hurricane 250 Gal drops added to provide the safety margin for the long over water flights.

The kit is a "rescue" of a partially built Airfix version which I got as part of a stash buy from a local modeller. It had surface damage hence my selection of a dark colour. The center section metal work (.010 sheet) was added so I did not have to paint all the glazing, The soft edges on the canopy made it almost impossible to get a nice straight line.

Build Notes:
What a PITA build.
Drops tanks from an Academy Hurricane
Propeller from an Academy P-47D
The decals are from a Techmod F4F FAA sheet.
Brush painted with Hannants Xtra-colour acrylic GSB.
Propeller mount: a tooth pick.  ;D

A very nice idea and the scheme would be perfect for night ops.  :)

Nice work on the Lysander!  At first glance I thought the under wing mounted tank poking out from the leading edge was a radar pod which I thought would be a really clever idea.  Then I find you are using a pair of Hurricane tanks and that was even better.  The propeller change makes it look ever so much better.

Thanks guys.

I had not thought off adding a radar pod but since I like to have two of each model, I now have a great excuse to buy another Lysander.

Very well done, Mr Gimper! Your mods are excellent and impressive in that you used such deceptively simple materials. I really like the new prop spinner. The Lysander has always been a favorite of mine. Looks stunning in that black finish!
