Hi folks,
A thread for your Heinkel He-162 Salamander/Volksjäger/Spatz Ideas and Inspiration.

to start with, what about a high altitude, stretched wing/fuselage redone bird?

A 162 in Japanese markings comes to mind right away.
-
She'd be beautifully clothed in Raspberry Ripple.
I've thought of one as a sort of tactical, short range reconnaissance aircraft of the USMC Korea. Why? Who knows? ;)

Oh, I do like that. :-*
-
I really like the He-162 II. Have you made a sideview? Is the central pod short like the P-38's or long like the OV-10's?
I've been next to a real He-162 (at the Planes of Fame museum in Chino Calif.) and that is one tiny, cramped cockpit!
-
that he-162 IIis great lookin. the jap one makes me think it should have a boathull an wingtip floats.

Knowing that the He-162 Salamander "people's fighter" would be hard to fly, Heinkel made a "trainer" with substantial He-162 components. Turns out "trainer" is BETTER and more reliable than He-162! Stretched, twin-boomed, and turbo-propped. "Nazi Enklave of Croatien" unit in "the Redoubt".
Modelwise: Two Lindberg He-162s for fuselage, tail, and outer wings, a Lindberg Ar-234 jet engine, 2 Zero props (note old Revell Zero had opposite-spinning prop!), Heller Saab J-21 inner wings and booms.
"Alpine Newt" camouflage.

-
The Soviets reverse engineer it, solve the reliability problems of the engine (WHAT??!?....the Soviets improve something? Are you kidding me!? Why yes I am. This is the Whiffverse.), and sell several dozen to wealthy sparring Bedouins and African Tribesmen in the 50's and 60's.

I have one He-162 set aside to be US Marines P-76A Wasp. Point airfield defence fighter.

There a few more He-162s on Richard's Blog's here (http://studiogekko.blogspot.ca/p/misc-profiles.html). Scroll down about 4/5ths of the way.

A Ki-162, I presume?

Not quite - see here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=96.0)

How about the He-162 as the basis for a cruise missile or anti-shipping missile? Replace the cockpit with warhead. Maybe even put shaped charge in nose?
-
1/72 He-162 based cruise missile(s) carried by 1/48 bomber otta work !
OR
1/32 He-162 kitbashed into 1/72 medium bomber etc... Hmmm....
-
japonese amphibious .lowerfusalage with boat hull and wingtip floats. they got plenty of runway in japan!
-
How about two engines located under the wing roots and a V-tail?
-
"japonese amphibious .lowerfusalage with boat hull and wingtip floats. they got plenty of runway in japan!" - arkon
Good concept. :) Design lends itself to that with its top mounted engine.
"How about two engines located under the wing roots and a V-tail?" - Weaver
There is one (a few?) He-162 kit that has a V-tail.
Building 1/32 as 1/72 can be a three engine jet bomber with hints of B-51. :)
Thatz two more on my oh so long wanna build list. :-\

There is always the Japanese way... for some reason given the 162's odds of successful return after a mission I'd see them using it much like the MXY7, but ground-launched rather than air-drop, ie pack the nose full of as much boomstuff as would fit.

While bouncing/browsing around on Ebay, Sprue Brothers, Squadron, etc,,, end up looking at He 162 kits.
Random whiff comes to mind. Because of SEA in 1960s there is a competition in parallel with the A-37. Emphasizing low cost, company X dusts off He 162 blueprints. Builds near replica in aluminum, installs subsystems of the time and installs same J85-GE-17A used in A-37. With crew of one and only one engine and similar performance, it goes into production for SEA service and as low cost counter insurgency export jet. South American allies are pleased with its faster transit to a target area compared with the T-28 and other prop aircraft. In US service the (A-162?) becomes low part of high/low mix of A-37B and A-162 like would later done with F-15 and F-16.
While He 162 has 2 x 20mm the A-162 could use same mini-gun as A-37B leaving room for sufficient ammo. Two hard points under each wing?
Thatz enough He 162 whiffing for one posting.

Recce work for the USMC (land based) in Korea.

Looking good in blue and USMC markings.
In styrene - tweak with jet pod and various things like a V-tail.
Also can be private sport jet.

There is a Dragon He-162D in the stash. I like butterfly tails for certain applications.

21st Century sport jet version can have more efficient biz-jet engine.
For customers with deeper pockets - Optional 25-35 degree swept wings and tail surfaces for 600ish mph speed. At least 550 mph.
-
Not really a He-162 but a Hs-132...... with seated cockpit.
apophenia made a version with armoured canopy, but I foolishly did not save a copy before the online source is gone...... :-X
-
He-162/Hs-132 both in same vein of concept & design. :)

Daryl --- Testors 1/48 Learjet engine can be used !

That sounds a bit like something Fio Piccolo would do. He-162D straight-wing, V-tail, Lear Jet engine, and a composite airframe. Voila, a sport plane for the wealthy in the Adriatic. :) :)
-
A 1950s A-10 for service with the Army Air Corps as an airborne tank buster. Under fuselage Mollins gun, under wing rockets, JATO, good rough / short field performance.
-
How about West German style markings and/or Allied WWII markings - I am thinking of the scenario whereby the Hitler Bomb Plot of 20th July 1944 is successful but the Germans only make peace with the Western Allies. As part of the need to fight the Soviets (with Allied assistance now), a small, easily produced jet fighter is needed. These serve alongside Dh Vampires at rough forward fields.

Hmmmmm.......... :)

Is now 2 x Hmmmmm.......... :)

Post war carrier version operating off US and UK CVL designs, including a night fighter variant.

Random idea: He-162 with a Rolls-Royce Derwent instead of the german turbojet?
-
Random idea: He-162 with a Rolls-Royce Derwent instead of the german turbojet?
What about an austere/simplified version for the untrained masses powered by a pulse jet instead of the turbojet?
-
You were saying?
There's actually quit a few kits just of that already available in both 1/72 and 1/48.
-
Just goes to show you how much I am not interested in WW2 German aircraft to keep up with that kind of thing :)
-
Which one is more economical, pulsejet or ramjet-rocket combo? Is there a wide margin of difference?

The float from an Airfix JU 52 fits almost perfectly on a 1/48 Dragon He 162. Don't forget tip floats!
:)

Now that is cool, it really works and looks so believable. Catapult launch capability too?
