Title: Short Stirling Mk 5 Transport
Post by: Robomog on January 26, 2026, 06:57:38 AM
Hi All

I  haven't been modelling for a while due to problems at home and when I did start I took the progress photos but did not publish them immediately.

Of course this drifted as well  so I've got a large back log of pics to publish, which I'll do as a series of posts rather than one big one.

So here we go.

I'm going to use this.

And this

To build this

And before I start I'd like to give this guy a mention in dispatches, I couldn't have started this project without this series of posts.

So first things first fill up the unwanted windows

Then add some extra ones on the port side.

Essentially traced some existing windows then extended the line and drilled and filed them to shape

It's at this point I realised I didn't have the same resin conversion kit, so I had to position the new nose and tail cones by referencing photos and three view drawings I found on the net, yes I've been counting rivets! .....  or at least rivet lines  ::)

Including locating and scribing the loading doors........

Then masking and fitting the windows, fortunately there were enough windows deleted to provide new ones

Also cut down the top turret surround and added a couple of braces for when I have to fill it in

More to come ...........

Good luck on your project.  It appears that you have quite the task ahead of you with this conversion.  I do hope that your obstacles are few and surmountable as you progress towards your goal.

Nice one !  The Stirling has a bit of presence to it and this conversion is not seen often.

Good to see another Stirling model being done.  What colour scheme ?  Be nice to see an Egyptian one.  Twelve were bought in 1946 (two fitted with "Anson" turrets), most were lost in the 1948 war with Israel.

Colour will be green and gray over azure blue, the airbrush is going to be working overtime  ;D ;D

Hi all

Thanks for the comments chaps, now for next episode

Not doing any extra details in the cockpit, once the canopy is on there's not much to see. The kit is quite old and there are a lot of sink holes particularly on the smaller parts, some of the bits are short shot but fortunately those bits are being discarded.

As expected the fit of parts is appalling so lots of PSR

Time to fit the nose and tail, first some reinforcement

Then the resin parts fixed with two parts epoxy

Aaaand more PSR  :(

The original Stirling curved into the turret but the transport  is flat

Also had to fill the gap at the back...?.

In between filler sessions I assembled the wings, these were a better fit, but sill needed a bit of filler for sink holes

Because of the "working " ailerons there was a massive gap between them and the wing so I filled the gaps with thin plastic card and trimmed it down

Thanks for looking.........

Like this transformation build.  Each mod making sense toward being a transport.  Significant increase in RAF airlift capabilities.

Hi All

Still going through the PSR and the smaller parts are not  helping, lots of  ejector marks and sink holes especially on the oil coolers and air intakes.

While I was at it I drilled out the oil coolers

As you all probably know the Sterling kit comes with a kit within kit in the shape of a set of bomb trollies and tractor, something to do while the filler is drying  :D

More when it happens........

Hi all

Final post to get me up to date.

Finally finished the PSR and masked and fitted the canopy and nose glazing. I would have liked to leave the nose glazing till last but it had to be sanded into the nose extension.

And as if by magic, the wings are on.....

And it has its first coat of primer.......

Just have to snag any missed holes and it's ready for spraying.

The bomb tractor has also made some progress....

The bombs did my head in, I did them in batches to preserve my sanity.

The bomb tractor and trollies are complete...

Just waiting for the bombs.

Thanks for looking ............
