Title: 1/48 An-2 Colt in Czech Markings
Post by: Old Wombat on August 20, 2025, 11:14:39 PM
This is only oh-so-slightly a whif.

I am building the Hobby Boss 1/48 Antonov An-2M Colt (81707);

(https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-hmlqrqdpah/images/stencil/1280x1280/products/31820/34164/hbs81707__53236.1612226875.jpg?c=1)

But in the markings of a Czech registered Antonov An-2P Colt OK-VHC;

(https://photos.smugmug.com/Czech-An-2M-Colt/i-H8M74HP/0/NjkWL8LB78M4KFQrrvZJZVRzD5pwBpcB65TVzswgg/X2/OK-VHC.2-X2.jpg)

I chose this aircraft because it's in a simple but pleasant scheme, which I should be able to replicate fairly closely, & because it's;

a) Not yellow,
b) Not military, &
c) Not bloody RUSSIAN!

(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/61/RA-01759_Antonov_An.2_Aeroflot_%287286143844%29.jpg)

The only significant visible difference between the An-2P & the An-2M is that the "M" has a flat-top tail, as below;

A favorite, though I will probably never build one. I used to daydream about owning an air service in Alaska and using these for tooling around.

Thanks for the encouragement, gentlemen! :smiley:

Doc, at least the ol' flying tractor was reliable, although, reportedly, not the smoothest, most comfortable or quietest ride. ;)

I thought I saw pics of one of these converted to a turbo prop. It’s been quite a while ago. Of course I say that about a lot of things these days!

Seek and ye shall find!

There are quite a few, if you look for them (sometimes if you don't);

Might as well add the PT6A to that list of turboprop conversions ...

Don't forget the 'official' turboprop version, the Antonov An-3T . . .
powered by the Glushenkov TVD-20-03 Turboprop of 1,010 kW (1,350 hp)

Found a WEIRD! low-wing monoplane version for your entertainment, ;D

NO! I'm not going to build it! ::)

That modified An-2 above is one of the development vehicles used for the Soviet Ekranoplan (Wing In Ground Effect) research program.

I think that's what is known as a mild whiff.

But as our esteemed colleague says " a whiff us a whiff is a whiff"  regardless of complexity  ;) ;D ;D ;D

Interested to see how this turns out, quite like the Colt.

Good project.

Hobby Boss, so expecting a reasonably seamless build experience for you.

Yes, I'm quite happy to call this a whif, no matter how minor the whif.

Build is going slowly but smoothly. I have the wings together but they have revealed errors in the Hobby Boss kit.

The leading edge of the upper wing is lined with quite tall ridges, these are supposed to be a fairly shallow corrugations - I've sanded them down a bit but, otherwise, I don't really care that much.

The top wing control surfaces are made up into a single surface per wing, there should be two. The An-2 has a huge amount of control surfaces but the lower & the inner half of the upper surfaces are flaps, with only the outer upper wing control surfaces being ailerons. Simple solution - cut he upper control surfaces in half & fill the ends where they butt up to each other. This will allow me to display it with the flaps down & the other control surfaces in different positions.

Man! Talk about fiddly!  :o

Just started putting the cockpit together;

3 parts for the control yokes (x2)
4 parts for the rudder bars (x2)
6 parts for the seats (x2)

And this is a 2012 issue kit!  :-\

Photo's later, it's priming day, today, & I want to get as many sub-assemblies done as I can first.  :smiley:

26 Parts in this photo alone - I 'm pretty certain that the interior has a higher parts-count than the rest of the kit combined.

I have the floatplane version of the An-2 in my stash and never really looked at the kit contents in depth.  Amazing how detailed those seats and control columns look.  Hope the path of construction continues smoothly for you on this project.

If it's the Hobby Boss kit, Jeff, then it's exactly the same kit with a different tail unit plus floats (all 3 versions they manufacture were brought out in the same year).

Build id going smoothly, just a little slower than anticipated, because I decided to put more of the little bits onto the various sub-assemblies before priming & painting.

Primer primed & painting started.

The destructions say to use "Intermediate Blue" (mostly) where I've painted, but that is usually a shorthand term for "We don't have, or know of, any equivalent to "Russian Cockpit Turquoise"".

Unsurprisingly, nor do I, so I had a couple of goes;

1st effort using Vallejo Emerald (70.838)
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Czech-An-2M-Colt/i-VRTsR3N/0/LK6XXFTbBBq2chFJWDVVxHfjrFhsJQ58wdPp7ZDMh/X3/DSCN9108-X3.jpg)

2nd effort, using Vallejo Blue Green (70.808)
(https://photos.smugmug.com/Czech-An-2M-Colt/i-BSpKSQx/0/M5DQXTMQFHMmtqBStkXL8LCwVpsdF3JsDt9z2ThHv/X3/DSCN9111-X3.jpg)

I think I'll leave it there. It looks pretty close.

The blue green works - I think, like most Russian colors, the actual shade depends on who was mixing the paint that day and how much they had to drink the night before (or that morning)

I concur. But, as Frank suggested, probably the only truly accurate colour is whatever Boris and his mates applied on painting day.

Post by: Old Wombat on August 28, 2025, 02:49:55 PM
My research has indicated that the colour varies according to manufacturer, factory, time-frame & how drunk/hung-over the paint mixer was on the day (Thank you, Frank! :smiley: )

Have started some detail painting. More photo's when ther's enough to make it worth the effort.

Still some detailing & touch-up work to be done, plus highlighting & some light weathering.

The boxes are 1/35, so about twice the size they should be.

Were the cockpit panels from the kit or 3rd party? they look great. Same with the kit boxes.

No AM parts on the kit build, at all - just a bit of artistic licence on how I painted the panels, The dials are kit decals with a sufficient amount of MicroSol applied to get them to conform to the part.

The model company boxes are the only AM parts, so far, & they're from the ETA "Cardboard Boxes: Carton Boxes of Miniature Modelling Hobby Companies" (ETA-266)*.

[*: A good selection of companies (Tamiya, Revell, AK Interactive, Trumpeter, Master Box, Vallejo, Dragon, Italeri, Airfix, & Mr Black Publications (https://www.mrblackpublications.com/) plus those in the photo's, but only one box from each in a set.]

Just have to start putting it all together & filling her up with cargo (which I'm in the process of gathering together & painting).

The doors to the rear fuselage are a bit (OK, a lot) dodgy, but they won't be that visible once she's closed up & the boarding door is fitted (open).

Thanks, but I can't say I agree, 'Mog.  ;D

But I did the best I could with washes that were fighting me all the way - the powders were better behaved but, still, not at their most compliant.  ;)

Especially the dark brown wash! Damn, but that one just wouldn't play nice!  ::)

Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I can get some white on the exterior of the fuselage before I put the windows in.  :icon_meditation:

Totally agreed ... even if the washes did fight you. The floor weather is especially realistic.  :smiley:

Were RW Soviet (and inheritor) aircrews issued with hob-nailled boots or something? Photos of the floor of their cockpits sure make it look so.

The MiniArt box (shown in previous photo's) & the Master Box ... box ... :-\ ... (not shown) are being retired from this build, as they're a bit too big, but they're being replaced by a selection from the following boxes from the same set;

Airfix/Tamiya/Vallejo/Mr Black Publishing/AK - I yet have to decide which to use, I may even be able to use all of them!  ;)

There are, also, 3 more resin wooden boxes from ResiCast joining the manifest.  :smiley:
