I'm starting a new thread for the Ian McQue project I've been working on for a while now. It seems its been so long without an update folks have forgotten what it was all about. So I'm collecting previously posted stuff in one place to make it a bit more organized.
I started with a tower made from a tank from a 1/24th scale truck trailer and some CD discs. Then I built a construction style monster generator set from a shelter from a 1/35th scale US Army truck.
Here's the pics I promised.

A little progress.

Here's the generator, the tower and the base of the jib crane on top. The tower is made from the tank from a 1/24th scale tanker truck trailer I've had laying around for 40 years or so. The platforms are CD discs.

The top platform I rebuilt using sheet plastic and Evergreen I beams. The device on top is a polystyrene shot glass sanded to sit at an angle so that one side is vertical and will get a door added to it soon. Waiting for a package from Hobbylinc with open web truss beams to make the jibs from. The package from Micro Mark is waiting at the post office if I can get the rest of the family out of the house I can pick that up. Waiting for the sun to come out so I can UV cast some extra parts.

Construction crane is nearly done. Added doors to two levels of the tower.

Paint soon and then rust and dirt!
I made a Grumpy’s Gas and Grease sign by bringing in the image into power point, sizing it down, copying it several times on one page and printing it out on paper. I cut out one image and used Tamiya glue and glued it to the thinnest plastic I had. I then glued another to the opposite side and trimmed it down. Surprisingly the glue didn’t change the colors at all. So once I paint the boom I can add the sign.
Working on the tower now adding lots of details and greeblies. I bought a can of iron oxide primer for a base then I’ll try the salt method to have primer showing through the topcoat. Going to try adding conduit made from old sprues that have quarter round corners. That and different size sprues from different kits should give variety. I was thinking of painting them yellow for fuel, red for electrical and orange for communications to add some color just like the utility color codes. Might happen yet.
-
Built a forklift type device for the construction crane for lifting pallets. Pretty sure I’ve seen similar devices at construction sites but it’s been awhile. I need to take and load some pics. Weather is supposed to be warm tomorrow and Wednesday so maybe some painting.
Here's the pics as promised.

I painted the trolley and forklift with Testors yellow chromate primer. I don't know if its a good chromate color but it gives a nice "used" shade of yellow. I added several conduits made from sprue using the curved corners of the set without ordering bunches of curved Plastruct elbows.
-
My daughter suggested I use a figure she gave me for Christmas last year on this current project. Its the Hasbro Star Wars Mission Fleet figure of the Mandalorian and The Child. Not sure of the scale but bigger than 1/35th. The pilot figure is 1/48th.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51767966993_4af5d8750a_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2mSyn24)
I may have to reevaluate the scope and scale of this build!!!
The figures are pretty good but the speeder bike looks like something made from Legos.
-
Well, back in December I promised paint and rust. Finally it happened! Krylon white, Testors red and Micro Mark Rust and Dust. Not too shabby. Especially since I bought the Rust and Dust years ago and it was still fine. I found that putting on a second coat the first coat would sort of brake loose and form a more patchy rust look. It worked well over the white and yellow while dulling down the red. Tell me what you think.

I hope this all makes better sense now. All future updates will go here. Also thanks for all the kind and constructive comments I couldn't figure out how to move. The complete sequence so far is under my Strange Observations thread.
It also appears I put this in Aero-space and it would probably go better in sci fi. If one of the mods sees this and wants to move it please do so.
-
I'm starting a new thread for the Ian McQue project I've been working on for a while now. It seems its been so long without an update folks have forgotten what it was all about.
Excellent, because that'd be me! :-[
-
You sure you want to go bigger than 1/35? ???
The 1/48 figure doesn't look out of place there. In fact, with the 1/35 hatches you've used, he looks to be the perfect scale.
-
I’m using 1/48th as I can use O gauge railroad parts along with Plastruct and Evergreen parts. Lots of model parts of various scales.
-
Yeah, I kinda misread the text & thought you were talking about the scale of the dio, not the Hasbro figures. :-[
-
I like what I see.
I have loved this type of build since I saw this inspired piece a zillion years ago in Australian Plastic Modeller magazine.
https://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/models/sci-fi/tower.htm (https://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/models/sci-fi/tower.htm)
Certainly in the zone and really like where thisis going.
Great work
-
Wow! It's been quite a while since I updated this! I'll have to take more pics as I've added a number of features to this project. The latest one is a 1/48th shipping container. Different O gauge railroad companies had them and they were either low on detail or $20 for one! So I checked the materials stash and discovered I had all the stuff to make one. So a few hours later I had this.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52617992158_b63dbd4f41_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2oaEXTm)
It's made from Plastruct and Evergreen sheets and shapes with a couple of dark colored tank parts, a door frame from from Tichy Train Group, clear and very thin PS from a food container and some etched brass someone gave me. First time I've used etched brass and I figured this was a great place to try it. Not too bad other than the lack of being able to adjust the position of the part because of the CA glue grabbing so fast. I've since painted it grey and will be weathering it with lots of rust. I'll take a few more pics of the whole set up and post soon.
-
 great use of spare parts. We need a competition to see who can identify the most ;)
I thought this build might be better posted in the Land or Sci-Fi threads ?
-
It will eventually involve a couple of "flying ships" docked to the support tower. Sci Fi would probably be best.
-
Nice! 8)
And McCue-style definitely fits the Sci Fi brief.
-
If the moderator wants to move it go ahead. Sci fi should work fine.
-
Glad this popped up again, I really want to see this finished. Sometime, there is no time limit
-
Brilliant.
-
Here's a couple of pics I promised. First up is the container I put a couple of decals on and some rust.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52630202274_16b8d2c3bb_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2obKxwA)
Then a little update on the tower. I added railings and an enclosed ladder among other bits and pieces.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52630392715_eacfeecf60_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2obLw94)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52630202059_e5cfc3bff6_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2obKxsT)
Best part about this project is, the more imperfect it is, the better! The rust and abuse of the container isn't done yet.....
-
Coming along nicely! 8)

Well its been quite a long time since I posted anything here! I got the urge to get out the junk parts boxes and try to build some bots/droids. Not something I've seen in a lot of Ian McQue's art but if he did this is what they might look like.
This is the first one with the main body made from some sort of breech block for perhaps a tank gun.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53759269675_888ac0c9f0_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2pUwiVV")
Here's the boys gathered around the table. I hope one of them is programmed to serve drinks!
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53757949092_8a43c7fef0_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2pUpxnf")
The one on the right is a bit of a throw back to Lost In Space. The one on the left is made from a missile parts and OV-10 Bronco main gear I've been saving for decades. At least I finally found a use for them!
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53759187864_013c8a3f56_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2pUvTBo")
I felt he needed a tail wheel even after I shaved a flat spot on the wheels that actually balanced. Once I added the arms he fell forward so I added a lead weight to the back of the inside. Sits well now.

This guy might end up a busy looking windmill yet, I don't know.

Dueling droids?

Tool box
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53758848341_692770d9c4_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pUu9Fx)
And I added some camera eyes. Some might say like WALL-E but, hey, why not? The eye holding bracket and the arms are from some 1/48th scale landing gear molded in black from I don't know what.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53759054508_a16dac3654_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2pUvcY9)
So this is what I've been fooling around with between planting a garden, watering plants, running to doctors and cleaning the air conditioning condenser from all the grass clippings from the last three years. And it's been fun, so that's good!
-
Great stuff! And fun to hear about your thinking processes and changes along the way
Looking forward to seeing how this diorama turns out :D
-
Thanks! I might change the location of the “eyes” yet. It looks a little weird this way.
-
Fantastic, this is back on the bench
-
Coming along nicely!
-
The Astromech Mk1 has another coat of white paint and the eyes on the WALL-E predecessor have been flipped around and the whole thing painted silver. I bought the Valeho weathering paint set to start trying to paint the tower. It needs a base coat of some industrial color then lots of different shades of dirt and rust. Enough to look well used but not a total junk pile. It will eventually be on a base with that generator and the shipping container. I want some sort of believable transport vehicle too. Lots to work on.
-
I took a mental break from the junkyard dog tonight and worked on ancillary build for my Ian McQue project. I took down an old build off the shelf a few months ago of an old Roco minitank (I think) of the West German assault gun from the 70s Kanonenjadgpanzer that I converted to the HOT antitank missile version. It was 1/72nd scale or there abouts and I ripped off the front and have been building a 1/48th “cockpit” for it to become a tracked tug for pulling cargo around. I found the floor and one side of I think a spitfire cockpit, the seat from some other thing, made the back wall from the cockpit floor of some three seater and other parts of sheet plastic. Now I have to rebuild the areas over the tracks and add details. I’ll probably paint it yellow or orange or something construction like. I found a pilot figure to fit without too much chopping but I’ll have to make him look less military.
-
Here's some pics to illustrate what I'm talking about. This is square one.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53896423786_05f169b5a6_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2q7Dg4Y")
Some driver compartment accommodations.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53896426091_666acbee58_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2q7DgKH")
At the moment this is the situation. Ready to paint, probably red with some different color replacement parts. Needs headlight and a hitch still. Seat is removed for the painting as it was already painted.

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53895505627_da8ea0f9fc_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2q7yy8D")
A rumble seat for a passenger to look after the cargo wagon. He better keep his head down when driving under low hanging structures!
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53896764594_3980b230df_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2q7F1nY")
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53896668653_c432ecd46d_c.jpg) (http://"https://flic.kr/p/2q7EvRP")
I might do a hitch for a farm tractor with a transverse bar with multiple holes. This already has a lot of tank parts so time for something a little different.
-
I painted the tug buggy good old Testors red. No paint weirdness even over the 25 year old original stuff. Touch ups are required but no biggy.
-
Still working on some cup holders but things are progressing. Here's some pics of the little red wagon.

Commander Cody takes control of the situation!

Some more paint details then its onto the shelf to await more diorama progress. BTW, the arm is from a 1/48th scale pilot figure but a little more of a hefty body. Makes the silver guy look skinny.
-
I love that little red tank!
Commando Cody reminds me of this."Nipple nipple tweak tweak": : https://youtu.be/90hc7M_vKv0?t=562
-
really like how that buggy came out.. such a great scale-o-rama
-
The finished product until I think of other things to add to it. Just a couple of touch ups.

Very cute! And who'd ever guess that there was KanJPz under there?
-
I still have to deal with Commander Cody. I'll have to finish a few other things first.
-
I can't believe it's only been a year and a half since I last worked on this guy!
I painted the boots, pants and jacket back then. Yesterday I painted him again with a brand called Army Painter. The color was called Fire Drake. I found it at a comic book and gamer store. Don't count these places out when looking for stuff! Anyway, the paint is pretty thin and filled in all the low spots with shadows and came out very nice IMHO. I need to weather up the little red wagon too!

Wow, I guess I need to retake that photo!
I have been working on some storage tanks for the rest of the scene and I managed to get them painted. Since I've been messing around with some weathering on the Sherman I'll have to try it here.

Here's the whole thing minus the crane so far. Maybe I'll try some salt chipping after spraying some more of that iron oxide primer.
This is my take a break project and a pallet to try some new things. I hope it's not another year or more until I make some more progress.
-
Gee! Good to see this build back
-
And I just got word that his book “Mileships” should be in my hands in about 2 1/2 weeks or less. That should be great inspiration.
-
I’ve been working on my version of the skymark navigation bouy. Except instead of floating in water it floats in the air. I need a couple of 1:48th scale seagulls to have sitting on it.
-
Gee! Good to see this build back
Seconded

Have the gulls attacking it for invading their space ;)
We have some very aggressive Wagtails here - even one will chase off two crows quick-smart.

Here's some progress so far.

I've added some climbing rungs to one of the uprights. I snipped some paper clips to about 1 cm then drilled a matching hole and glued it with Tamiya glue. Of course, the Tamiya glue won't hold metal, but the hole was tight enough that it welded it shut around the metal peg. Actually, worked easier than CA glue. I've added a few extra greeblie bits and I might be able to paint this soon. I'll add an overhead light after painting is done.
-
Here's what one of the kits from Fitchenfoo looks like. Instead of resin they are only in 3D files now.

This is alongside of one of the Remora boats.
-
I’ve added hand rails to the ladder from paper clips and braces along the sides beneath the deck. And a few extra tie downs. I have some iron oxide primer that I’ll spray on first then maybe some salt treatment under the final coats. This will be a real weathering challenge for me.
-
Oh very good.
My brain of course went straight to Barad Dur of the Lord of the Rings movie with the ever seeing eye on top.
-
Well, not that evil I hope! ;D
-
Here's what the iron oxide primer looks like.

You can see the foot pegs and handrails I added from paperclips. Also, a couple of tie offs from the bends in the paperclips along the edges.
I'm still trying to figure out a light for the top of the tower. I was looking for a bell for the buoy. All good buoys have a bell. I was searching in craft departments of big box stores and different craft stores for something like charm bracelet supplies, but nobody had anything. I was looking online for charms and model trains supplies but none of them would say how big the bell was. I was lamenting to my wife and daughter about this until my daughter ran upstairs and rummaged around in her craft stuff and came down with four bells! Perfect! Later, I was downstairs at my hobby desk when I looked at the pull chain of the shop light that was over the desk. Lo and behold! A perfect bell at the end of the chain! A quick look around at other shop lights showed several more bell shapes hanging right over my head! The minister might say if you are in need look to the heavens. If I get around to building the boats I'll need them. Until that point, they can stay in place and not get lost!
-
Looks great in red primer! So do the details!
-
I found some kosher salt in the kitchen. The grains of salt are much chunkier than usual. I’m going to try this, hopefully today.
-
Looks great in red primer! So do the details!
Indeed! That iron oxide primer really ties things together
-
I think I figured out the light problem. A clear part from a mechanical pencil that held the eraser. I managed to carve something that looked like a bulb and colored it red. Looking good so far.
-
Just stupendous... this is really, really looking the part :icon_alabanza:
-
Thanks again!
-
I’m experimenting on this project. Right now it’s covered with grains of various sizes of kosher salt. It should give a nice paint chipping effect. I was thinking about spraying on a top coat of white then red sections but my hip was killing me so I crashed in the recliner. Maybe tomorrow. Or today as it’s past midnight here.
-
It's more than one day later but, here we are. I went with Testors cromate yellow and I think it works just right.
Here's a couple of pics of the salt grain results.
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/55132948145_e489747b0a_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2rZULFt)
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/55132948140_8762ba8044_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2rZULFo)
I used kosher salt as the grains are much larger. Most of the small grains won't come off or are just yellow underneath. No problem, it just adds to the rusty look that's next. I'll hand paint some NATO black portions next.

Cracking work!

Indeed! Very nice work, Ken

It does add to the look. You can just imagine the rust scabs bubbling up from below the paintwork :D
Interesting, isn't it, how the entire rusting process fascinates us ... unless you own the item in question or have just been handed a rust-scraper :o
-
I love the rust job! Can you carefully remove one grain and leave a sliver of paint, like you see in some rusted objects?
-
I’ll have some new pics shortly.
-
Some Tamiya NATO black for contrast.

Some touch ups and then rust!

I’ve applied two colors from the Vallejo rust set. I’m following the directions as best I can. Photos when get finished.

I received my Mileships book by Ian McQue the other day. Lots of great artwork and some little short stories to explain some of the situation. Here's a couple of pics of the art.

So you can see where I'm getting my inspiration from. Just trying to model all these different ships would keep a guy busy for a long time.

Someone needs to build a Blade Runner dio.
-
That Ian McQue artwork is awesome! I especially liked the Laing Bros. Stores & Repair boat :D
-
I like all 3 in the top pic, & Lorelei & Morden Tench in the lower image.
What I love about the designs is that you can visualise them all starting as water-borne boats, which then have anti-grav equipment installed & the gradual post-installation evolution of the boats into what you see now.

Here's the tug buggy loaded with rust and dirt.

More photos of the Skymark buoy will be coming soon. I keep adding more details.

Coming along nicely.

Love what you've done with your tug buggy.
Still hard to believe that there is a scale-o-rama Kanonenjagdpanzer underneath, though ;D

Here's a couple of pics of the buoy. I rubbed down several areas of wear with a lead pencil. I dug out some chain and plastic hooks from railroad parts. The final result will have some ropes and cables too.

I'm working on a few figures to give it a little life and show scale. They'll look like these mopes.

Nice job on the rusting! Commando Cody's tug looks great! The 1/35 figures look cartoonish; I don't know if they're supposed to be that way or just a bad sculpt.
-
I like where this is going! Out of curiosity, did that vane marked '7' start life as a Huey tail rotor blade?
-
A random aileron from a box of parts a friend gave me. I think someone junked out a 1/32 P-40 judging from the other parts that were the same color plastic. Slouching is a common theme. I’m not too sure about the Converse basketball shoes two of them are wearing. Definitely need a hard working life look to them to be believable.
-
McCue's characters are generally cartoonish without being over-the-top caricatures.
Just as his Mileships are not to be taken too seriously, nor are his people.
-
Lots of the characters in his art seem to be wearing bulky long overcoats. Something about a chutecoat. That implies to me a combo parachute and overcoat. Kind of hard to imagine putting your coat on in the morning and fastening the harness, but hey, works for me.
