Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde and Tu-144 Ideas and Inspiration
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:57:20 AM »
Hey guys, I used to live around the corner from Dulles directly in the flight path of the Concorde when I was little.  Mom's been going through a bunch of old photos lately and I picked out a few good ones.  There's bound to be more so I'll add them later on.  PM with an e-mail for high-res versions.

Top left = March 1988
Top right = November 1988
Bottom Two = January 1990 at Dulles

Enjoy!

Have 1/144 kit.  Likely become strike bomber one day.

I saw Revell's 1/144 kit in the shop last month and I instantly thought; glossy black surveillance bird!  The bomber version has been done but I've yet to an SR version.  Anyone game?

Those are logical choices.
Since I build all to end up as 1/72.  Likely be strike fighter (like F-111) or long range interceptor of bombers etc.  One seat or two seat tandom.

A sensible Joint and cost effective British/French adoption of the Concord as a strategic bomber, so as to replace both the V-Bomber force and the Dassault Mirage IV.
Incorporation of flight refuelling receptor, RWR, ECM, Chaff & Flare depressors, attack & nav radars and a rotary weapons bay arrangement!! ;)

A real life opportunity lost in my opinion  :(

This is my attempt at a Concorde B.1.  One day I'll start a thread on how I got to this stage -----  ;)

I shortened the forward fuselage by 2 inches and I'm going with exposed after burner cans without thrust reversing (apparently that was how the RAF had wanted it [according to Tony Buttler])

While attempting to sort "the loft" and reorganise its extensive contents, I inevitably came across a Revell 1/144th Concorde.

Now I know I shouldn't but I reckon it'll be OK to build it alongside other stuff I'm finishing off.....that's the idea anyway :)) :))

But in what colours?
It'll be military, and probably have big missiles under the fuselage.

So far I've discarded the rather obvious white RAF scheme.
But these are possibilities:

Black with SEAsia colours...USAF
Black with USAF low-viz markings
Argentine scheme?
Israeli 3-colour?
Green Irish Air Corps?
Silver USAF.

I'm sure there could be others that haven't occured. ???

Why not a Soviet carrier-killer?  Like an off-the-shelf Tu-22M3?  Heck, if you do that, you could give it to all sorts of countries. Say Iran bought a couple for their national airline, then converted them to military use after the Revolution. They have that really snazzy P-3 Orion blue camouflage paint scheme that you could use, too.

You could also do the same basic story, but with the Chinese. They order 10 for business flights to L.A., but only 2 are delivered before Tienanmen.  They reverse-engineer them into military naval strike planes, the prototype first being seen in the late '90s. The first squadron enters service in the mid-2000s.

Cheers,

Logan

Actually I was just thinking something similar.  Maybe either NASA or their British/European equivalents UKSA/ESA or even a private company for that matter (Virgin Galactic?) with the Concorde as the first stage in a 2 stage to orbit system - either manned or unmanned.  Think of it as the Supersonic equivalent to this:

If kept in RAF service into the late 80s and 90s, I'd be inclined to do it up in hemp over grey like the Canberra and Victor fleets. I always had a soft spot for that scheme:

net photo

It fit a higher altitude mission, got grubby nicely if you like weathering and would give you the option to cook up some Granby nose art and mission markings for it.

Other ideas:

ARDU Fanta Can:

Canadian Transport Command scheme, as worn by the 707 here:

Luftwaffe Norm 82 would also look pretty slick on a Concorde:

You sure it's a Lincoln you want?  The Concorde would be close to a stall whilst the Lincoln would almost have to be in a vertical dive to keep up.

Never got around to finishing this because I couldn't work out how to do the hull. Anyhow, you get the idea: BAe Narwhal 1/144th scale supersonic flying boat with a recce drone made from a 1/72nd Bloodhound. Really needs to be in a diorama with a support aircraft that's a BAe-146 with USB and ACLS... :-*

The nose angle would be prettier and more blended if it had ever got past this mockup:

For the hull, look at some of the things the Soviet designers considered for supersonic flying boats.   I know there's some articles out there as I remember APR running something about them.

New 1/72 British Airways Concorde from Revell of Germany http://www.revell.de/en/products/model-building/aircraft/civilian-aircrafts/id/04997.html

Since seeing this, I've been pondering acquiring one and then to scale-o-rama it to the One TRUE Scale as a competitor to the B-1B.

Why do you need to scale-o-rama it when it's already in the One True Scale

The Concorde is already the same size as a B-1B, or the XB-70, here's a pic with it beside the XB-70 --- and I shortened the Concorde by 2" (51mm)

I stand corrected, I meant to type the One TRUE Scale, and not the inferior One True Scale...it has been edited above to reflect that.

I'm thinking of a three-seat tandem arrangement (pilot/navigator/weapons systems officer) add a couple of bomb bays, close up the passenger windows, maybe put a v-tail on it.  Really, there's so many possibilities.  Plus, how cool would it look int MNF over anti-flash white sitting next to my SR-71, SR-75 and B-1B?

I like your thinking…and your commitment to the one TRUE scale! :)  Speaking of which, don't forget this:

One of my oldies: The BAC/Republic F-114 Napa

Tales from Area 51*

The BAC/Republic F-114 Napa

The Missing US Fighters**: The numbers 112-116 and 24 to 30.

One in the Missing Fighter number designations that has recently been unearthed, the F-114 Napa was the result of a secret deal signed between the US Government and Her Majesty's Government of the United Kingdom. In exchange for cancelling their own TSR-2 strike aircraft and ordering the F-111K (which was eventually itself cancelled!) the US Government licensed the production of an UK designed fighter. Since BAC had been working on the Concorde design, it was natural that a lot of that aircrafts' characteristics found their way into the new, and highly top secret USAF fighter.
License built at Republic Aviation, the F-114, or Napa as it became known (Since the Concorde was named after a wine, it was felt an American wine would be suitable name for this aircraft) was only produced in a small number of airframes, numbering either 35 or 37. Records are unclear as to whether all the allocated airframe numbers were actually built, or if some were merely produced as spare part airframes instead. The small run was due to the UK government cancelling their order for the F-111K, which ended the license agreement.
The only operational service for the F-114 Napa appears to have been as air patrol from Kwajalein Atoll Air Force Base to intercept and escort away intrusive Soviet recon aircraft, as the area was a secure missile test range. Typical loadout was three long range fuel tanks, two Sparrow and two Sidewinder missiles. The aircraft carried no gun, a crew of two and had a cruise capability of Mach 2.5. Range was 2500 miles, and maximum altitude was 65,000 feet.
All Napas were eventually retired and placed in permanent storage at the USAF Secret storage depot under McMurdo Ice Sheet, Antarctica, in 1992. No record, except this, exists of their deployment.

*Area 51 is a Top Secret US Air Force facility that handles all the Secret, Top Secret, Ultra Top Secret and Real Super Ultra Uber Top Secret paperwork. It does not in any way actually test or contain aircraft of terrestrial or extra terrestrial origin. That stuff is at Area 42.

*Missing US Fighters: With the public unveiling of the F-117 Stealth, it was inadvertently exposed that the USAF had been using numbers AFTER the F-111, up to at the very least F-116. Also, in the early 21st century, the designation of F-35 was applied to the JSF winner, revealing that numbers from F-24 to F-34 had been utilised as well. Sloppy record keeping is to blame, and the relevant personnel have been transferred to Area 69 for retraining.

FSP2 has the Concorde's immediate French predecessor, the Sud Super Caravelle as a carrying and launching aircraft for ALBMs.  I could see a militarized Concorde as such for both Britain and France, though likely not the same missiles.

This, of course, invites thoughts of similar variants of the Tu-144.

We took a Tu-144 and replaced its 4 enormous underwing engines with 2 even larger ones located at the base of the tail fin. Afterwards, all the freed space under the wings and fuselage is occupied with a huge cft.
