MBT-70 goes conventional and, perhaps, practical

MBT-70 was cancelled in Nov-1971, some time later project was sold 'as it was' to an undeclared power. Rumors mention some possibilities:

Fourth Reich
Teutonic order
Order of the Temple
Spanish Empire
Byzantine Empire
...

Anyway, driver must be relocated in hull's front area, that must be enlarged to make room, an standard gun (105 mm L7 in this case) must be installed, ... we will see modifications as they are available.

Is that the old Aurora 1:48th scale MBT-70 model? 

Looking good so far with the added mass to the front of the hull.  Maybe just enough room for a driver without too much effort.

Oh cool! I've had a similar idea brewing for a while but the lack of the elusive "round tuit" has kept me from getting it done. I look forward to seeing this one come together.

Yes, it is the old Aurora model. A bad model with a lot of room for detailing and whiffing.

My first encounter with that model was back in 1967 or 1968 and it was a fun build.  The plastic spring suspension included with of the kit was a nice feature for the time.  The infantry figures armed with the Stoner 63 rifles were certainly a bold move too. 

I added an M2 Browning .50 between the loader's and commander's hatches.  The parts came from an Aurora M4A3E8 Sherman or the M46 Patton in the same series. 

You certainly have a great idea with swapping out the main gun tube.  Looking forwards to seeing what you do for the driver compartment in the hull if you are going to do that modification.

My donor is an old Tamiya 1/48 Type 74: the gun, driver's hatch, some engine grills, exhaust pipes, ...

Have you thought about changing the tracks and/or road wheels? For an old Aurora kit they might be pretty rough.

Tracks are OK, wheels are really bad. I have been thinking ... in this case donors will be a Kanone and a Strv also from the old 1/48 Tamiya series.

Interesting/unusual to see this kit again.  Had a couple around in the 70s.  Remember cube like model box.
Chose donor well, is going together as it otta.  You are taking it to the next level.  :smiley:
