I wonder if Antonov ever attempted to create a gas turbine powered An-2?

Well, yes - there was/is the AN-3 which is powered by a Glushenkov TVD-20-03 Turboprop (which is a Gas Turbine):

I would love it if someone did a conversion in 1/48.

I did a playfix one of these, I left the bottom set of wings off, replaced the engine cowl with an unknown item from a ww2 aircraft, 4 blade prop, and floats. I put the pollution control decals on it from the revel Dornier kit and some Canada decals on and painted it bright orange. I also put some spray tanks on it for spraying chemicals on to oil slicks.

From the Wikipedia page:

Quote
A note from the pilot's handbook reads: "If the engine quits in instrument conditions or at night, the pilot should pull the control column full aft and keep the wings level. The leading-edge slats will snap out at about 64 km/h (40 mph), and when the airplane slows to a forward speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph), the airplane will sink at about a parachute descent rate until the aircraft hits the ground."

From the link on Facebook that inspired my post of the other day:

From what I understand, it's the fuselage of an An-2 mounted to the chassis of a KrAZ truck, and it's based somewhere in Hungary where it's used as a promotional item of some sort.  The Aeroflot markings are spurious, just applied for appearance's sake.

I saw these at different times this year, top one was at Yuma Airshow in the static park (March), bottom one was at the Calgary Airshow (July and actually in Airdrie just north of Calgary) which did a flying display.  It flew incredibly slowly all the way along the main runway which must have taken nearly 10 minutes to complete.

I have heard stories of the North Vietnamese using rocket pod equipped An-2s as night raiders.

Bilek made a boxing of their 1/72 Colt in such a configuration at one point in time.

It'll take a bit to make a WHIFF version of an aircraft that's done almost everything short of fighter duties at some point in its life.

Here's some pics I've taken of Colts over the past ten years to serve as some inspiration:

At least one owner has equipped his An-2 as a summer cottage or camper van.
The family (husband, wife, a couple of kids) spend summer holidays in it, and sometimes fly to some European destinations.

I just wish they'd fit them with engines that didn't CLATTER so much!  :(

There's one around these parts, tastefully painted in red and yellow, that's used for para-dropping and the racket it makes is appalling. I was unlucky enough to be on 'Controller Duty' when it 'dropped into' our gliding club once and I thought the entire engine was going to fall off the airframe onto our launch point!

The Colt has no published stall speed as it's noted to be nearly impossible to stall one.

Having witnessed the one at the Calgary Airshow I can well believe that --- admittedly there was a stiff breeze blowing down the runway towards it while it flew up the runway, I think it could have gone backwards if the wind had been a bit stronger ---

I think I'll buy a model of it, then stick a Skyraider R-3350 on it.  Then some amphibious floats ----

Life in the old girl yet:

There were certain attempts to extend live of Antonov An-2 biplane.
Now, in Novosibirsk it's all-composite prototype flies

Google translation of the page:
http://www.sukhoi.org/news/company/?id=5711

06/10/2015
The prototype light multipurpose aircraft made its first flight from the airport of Novosibirsk branch of the company "Sukhoi"

Moscow, June 10. Today, at the airport Eltsovka of subsidiary "Sukhoi" - Novosibirsk Aviation Plant named by V.P. Chkalov (NAE), made the first flight of a prototype light multipurpose aircraft, designed and built in the Siberian Research Institute of Aviation named by S.A. Chaplygin. The flight was successful. The plane was piloted by SibNIA chief executive officer -  test pilot Vladimir Barsuk.

In the manufacture of large composite-glueing tooling for carbon fiber aircraft parts NAE helped. Details of polymeric composite materials (PCM), which is used in the manufacture of an autoclave SibNIA experts plan to produce composite manufacturing Novosibirsk aircraft plant.

The aircraft structure implemented advanced technology of modern aircraft. The panels of the wing spars and ribs biplane circuit made of carbon fiber. Two new biplane wing made from the composite joined in "bookcase" smooth transition. Unlike the classic biplane wing completely absent brace that will allow a 50% increase in maximum and cruising speed. The minimum airspeed of close to zero has been reached in the first flight. In the short term - the completion of the design and manufacture of fuselage from polymeric composite materials.

Development and construction of prototype aircraft for local airlines to replace the An-2, conducted by a team of SibNIA Aviation Development Programme of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

YES!! I've always liked the idea of a cantilever biplane with no struts or wires - excellent!  :)

Here's a whiff idea for an An-2 or derivative: a Soviet/Russian Navy one used for COD, i.e. flying supplies out to their Kiev class V/STOL carriers?

A new found interest in the An-2 Colt thanks to recently acquiring the HobbyBoss An-2 Colt on floats.  I have the Valom An-2M kit too so it might result in a kit-bash to get the An-2M mounted on floats.

I would like to know where the stores pylons are positioned on the lower wing.  It seems that the stores pylon in the armed An-2 have a strong resemblance to a portion of the stores pylon from the Mi-24 Hind or perhaps the Mi-8/Mi-17 Hip and I would like to try and place a pair of pylons under the wing for fuel tanks or maybe a life raft container.

Google has not been my friend in my quest for decent images and the only images of the pylons found so far have been the images of the resin pylons supplied in the Valom An-2 kit.  Anyone have images or links that I am unaware of that can be shared?

Thanks,

Thanks Greg, sure does help some.  Location is much closer to the fuselage than what is suggested in the Valom kit instructions.  Stores pylon is also much different.  Looks like artistic license prevails.

Or build fuselage as road driven school bus.

Yes... This is not new idea.

However, the photo in GTX post shows the five-blade engine and I'm not sure is this a new engine on TR-301TB, or some new modification...

The first one I showed is the SibNIA (Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute) TVS-2MS which has a new all-composite high-lift, high-aspect-ratio wing, a new avionics suite and new TPE331 power plant.  You can get a better view of the wing arrangement here:

The second one is a variant of it and is the TVS-2DT and is indeed a monoplane:

I bet it sounds just like a Basler BT-67 too (which sounds like a Metroliner). I watched one land yesterday at YYC

Give the mono-plane retracts and it'd be a 'modern' variation on the Fairchild/Krieder-Reisner XC-31;

Is that "Gunship" AN-2 meant to represent the one used in the attack on the hilltop in Laos - Lima Site 85?

A recent Osprey title claims downing of one or two attacking South Vietnamese patrol boats. Apparently they either issues with lock on or even seeing them on the radar that a Phantom crew claimed coming close enough to see the red cockpit lights.

I do like the monoplane version.

Or build fuselage as road driven school bus.
Aussie BTSers may be familiar with the "VH-DAK" bus, which provides a helpful precedent: https://youtu.be/nNwblLt89g8
