While visiting stash spotted another C-47 based build concept. Checked parts compatibility and building is now progressing in parallel with C-47F (former DC-3F).
C-47H was late WW2 re-winging to carry heavier loads in a C-47. "H" is for Heavy. Easier build than C-47F. Remains tail dragger.
Attached picture of kits involved. More soon.

Moving along with build. Some parts glued some fitted for photo. More to do.
Looks rather "normal" to me and related to Boeing 307. Probably works for Allies '46 GB
Leaning to painting 1950s MATS to go with C-47F painted same on flight line.
Include OOB C-47 in 1950s MATS scheme too ?
see attached photos

Wow I'd have never thought B-17 wings would fit so well on a C-47!
Looks very powerful indeed!
Great stuff!

It is interesting, while I would like to check the difference with the 4-engine airliner from Douglas alone (DC-4?)
-
might need to enlarge the rudder appendage a bit to accommodate that larger wing and extra engines. Looks great as is but the little voices in my head are advising me to suggest the larger tail. :P
-
That is too cool

American FW-200 :-*

Appreciate comments.
"Interesting" -- Yes is interesting what polystyrene possibilities mixing fuselages/engines/wings are lurking in stash boxes. Seen plenty examples at BTS over the years.
Cool to me too sitting here on work table (make that top of printer). In a C-47 sense exudes power and lift. Perfect for transporting discovered German gold bar stashes beyond reach of Red Army during 1945. Does give me FW-200 flashes. Actually,,, can be fitted with B-17 tail surfaces !
-
Maybe you should call this the "Chinook" ;)
-
nice combination !

After various distractions. 1/1 cars and such. Have some building time.
Like other's progress pictures (see whatz involved), so here are mine before primer covers it.
> Filled in trailing 1/2 inch of wing root with clipping off same part of B-17 fuselage. Giving continuous wing to fuselage flow as on both B-17 and C-47.
> Top of wing is good match to fuselage, no issues. Bottom of wing is much deeper than C-47 wing. Cut between wings section out of donor kit. With bit of filing fits well to match curve of B-17 wings looking near normal for C-47. Filling with putty and filing to smooth it out.
After wing join is finished the rest of build is OOB type assembly.
Attached underside picture and where rear of wing root was removed from B-17.

That's some mighty fine kit surgery there!
The wings look like they mate up very nicely with the fuselage.
Well done!
Already looking forward to your next update,

TREMENDOUS. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :icon_alabanza: :icon_alabanza:

Thanks for enthusiasm for the "H".
After down time from a yukky cold with prescription drug help am getting back to this build.
Seen it enough that looks normal OOB-ish. Going with MATS 1950s inspired scheme. WW2 origins serving into 50s & 60s.
Picture update soon.

Enough progress for photos. Past the half way point. Obviously more to do.
Props placed in engines and engines placed on wings. No Glue. Thinking gloss black for prop hubs.
Will use this variation on MATS scheme for some other cargo builds.
See attached photos.

Excellent ----

Just realized...
It's obviously intended to carry cargo that's heavy but not particularly bulky, because the fuselage is not any larger.
It's the 1950's, the Atomic Age.
The C-47H is obviously a dedicated nuclear material carrier, hauling test and live warheads, reactor components, enriched uranium, and so on.

Thatz a good point. So perceptive. Most interesting. I don't know, I was not there. Just building model based on sketchy information available. NEVER was officially confirmed version of C-47. An original use (cover story?) was flying out stashes of German gold bars. This follows as post war plutonium/uranium/led hauler. Four engine reliability important for that. Can see them flying atomic cannon warheads in Europe too.

One of your best yet, fins!

Execellent build. Conspiracy theory icing on cake. Delivery style perfect. [Don't ever] Stop.

Thanks.
Is built and ready for decal selection.
See attachments.

Good! It seems this is the fastest C-47 I have ever seen!
-
Looks good!
-
Wow definitely one of the sweetest paint jobs I've seen come down the pike in a while!
The demarcation is especially sharp! You have incredible talent, Bill!

It looks awesome! The four engines and large wing area (vs the DC-3) really give the impression that this plane can lift some heavy loads for long distances.
-
Thanks guys. Was an impulse idea when browsing stash. Saw kits sitting there and made the connection. Same as most my other builds.
Were some paint from hell moments that slowed progress. Wing edge landing lights of Revell kit need filing fussing to fit.
Building OOB C-47 to park next to is a display option. Lift & power difference will show well. C-47 fuselage being shorter, lighter, sleeker than B-17 translates to more payload than a B-17 carries. Finishing in time to start on Allies '46 GB. Though like said, C-47H qualifies as Allies '46 aircraft.
-
By golly finished C-47H.
Attaching pictures in two postings.
Widely used and praised C-47 was transport workhorse of WW2 and later. Certain special mission situations called for greater payload weight or range or higher altitudes for crossing mountain ranges. During March-April 1945 with B-17G production ending at Seattle plant, twenty extra wing sets were produced for retro fitting to C-47s. Conversion work was done in Seattle to C-47s flown there. They were designated C-47H (for heavy). Produced without fanfare and quietly slipped into service. C-47H was little known to the public. Last ones served until approximately 1980 though records are almost nonexistent. No official USAF C-47H photos are available. Private party interviews and photos are only source of information. Apparently used in 1945-46 to move German gold bar stashes and later to transport other high density material such as uranium in led lined containers supporting atomic weapons build up.

Second bunch of pictures.
Included shot with B-17 built in early '70s that survived okay on shelf. B-17 has 10ft longer fuselage.
Last one is full briefing page. Display it next to model at shows.

Looks deceivingly natural (so whiffery at its finest) and the paint job & decalling is very sharp. Two thumbs way up!
-
I am sure Donald Wills Douglas, Sr. is thinking from the afterlife why did I not come up with this idea?
This will floor the IPMS folks at the April show Bill.
-
Aced it!

Brilliant build Bill :-*

Absolutely gorgeous Bill and entirely plausible!
This one will definitely get heads turning!
Pure eye-candy all the way!

beautiful idea, and build

Appreciate your interest and approval.
Been seeing it long enough now that looks "deceivingly natural" to me too.
Thinking of C-47H as half way point between C-47 and Boeing 307.
As usual; made mistakes and learned (I hope), pleased ended up well as it did.
Cancelled C-47F yet to reappear in some fast configuration or two or three. More concepts pop to mind.
