I remembered that firing a 120mm mortar with a big powder charge could look pretty cool, depending on the weather - but I didn't remember a ring of fire like that.

That's a sodium laser artificial star (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_guide_star) used for adaptive optics in large telescopes to correct most of the distortion caused by the atmosphere. Since you know what the artificial star should look like, you can back out the distortions. It only works for a tiny part of the sky.

The S-97 RAIDER helicopter takes to the skies in its latest flight tests this month. Based on our X2 Technology, this next-generation aircraft will change the way aviators fly, reaching speeds of 220 knots!

The Synchrophasotron was a synchrotron-based particle accelerator for protons at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna that was operational from 1957[1] to 2003.[2] It was designed and constructed under supervision of Vladimir Veksler, who had invented the synchrotron independently from Edwin McMillan.

Its final energy for protons, and later deuterium nuclei, was 10 GeV.

The Trans Canada colors on the Douglas DC-8 was every bit as elegant as the same colors on the Lockheed Super Constellation. TCA introduced the Douglas DC-8 Series 40 on its domestic routes on 1 April 1960 and on its trans-Atlantic routes on 1 June 1960.

The Series 40 was unusual in that it used the Rolls Royce Conway turbofan. At the time of its introduction, the Conway was more efficient than either the JT3C or the JT4A, but US airlines didn't get the Series 40 for two reasons- they didn't want a British engine and they were holding out for the JT3D engine (civilian version of the TF33).

I suspect another reason was simply bad experiences with support of British engines on the Viscount.  The history of the 727 shows that it was originally designed with RR engines but had to have an engine replacement when "Captain Eddie", after bad experiences with the Viscount, refused to order it unless RR built a US support facility which they refused to do.   The P&W JT8D ensued.

The F-5 used two pylons while the Hasegawa set had a on pylon set up. Looks like it wouldn't be too hard to convert.

Series of posts on Twitter by user Freight Dog @FreightD (nothing to do with the model company, I presume):

"You know your day isn't going well when your left engine has a bit of a moment on departure. "

"It's really turning into a stinker when parts of said engine go straight through the fuselage.."

"Your day is complete when the laws of physics dictate entry holes will always be smaller than exit! Well done crew! "

And in case you were wondering, this is why you never sit level with the props..... ???

The incident was a couple of years ago. Good thing it was a cargo flight  :o

"A Miniliner Fokker F27-500 on behalf of Europe Airpost, registration I-MLVT performing freight/mail flight 5O-5921 from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Dole-Jura (France) with 2 crew, was climbing through about 1000 feet out of Charles de Gaulle Airport when the left hand propeller separated from the engine and impacted the fuselage causing a large hole at the side of the aircraft. The crew was able to position the aircraft for a return to Paris and landed safely back at Charles de Gaulle Airport."
