Thanks!

I envisage the Il-31 as sort of a Su-7ised Il-28. Generally Ilyushin's answer to the Fitter family using an existing fuselage barrel for ease of production (in theory). So new 50-60ish degree sweep wings. New nose intake. Single engine in the fuselage replacing the bomb-bay. Something of the order of a Lyulka AL-7F which has similar smash to the Tumansky R-15 of MiG-25 fame - so supersonic performance via brute force rather than any finesse!

The Il-31M features revised intake geometry (principally auxiliary air inlets), uprated engine (AL-7M perhaps?) and a spine for better aerodynamics/more avionics.

I have a few export customers in mind and a plaything for the PVO coming up next. It may be interesting to speculate on an Ilyushin Fencer equivalent?? Maybe a Fencer-ised Il-54 with fuselage engines rather than podded in a revised aft fuselage. Sort of what the Il-102 was to the Il-40.

Sorry for the ramble.  ;)

No need to apologise.  I like your innovation here :).  You had me confused a bit though as I was trying to work out which Ilyushin project design you had based your profile upon.

Given the high performance of the Il-31, an interceptor variant for the PVO was almost inevitable. This was the Il-31P Fissure-D:

The Indian Air Force was the first export customer. Initially they received Il-31D Fissure-Bs, a downgraded variant with simplified avionics, intake geometry and a downrated engine. These proved unsatisfactory and later India received the Il-31MD variant which, while still not as potent as the Soviet's own Il-31M, was a considerable improvement. Here is an Indian Il-31D performing a somewhat colourful flypast after an exercise:

This is interesting, even if I do not love such huge cargo, without streamlined aerodynamics (this is not your fault, this is the template of course)... ;)

I've always felt that the US Navy needed some kind of Tu-16 Badger analogue. So what if Martin and the USN Bureau of Aeronautics, concerned with the viability of the seaplane deterrent, developed a conventional land-based long-range patrol bomber from as many P6M components as possible?
