Hello all. Long time. Seems as if I have got my profiling mojo back [groans from audience]. Quiet you!

I really like the Ilyushin Il-31 - any more details?
Title: Re: Empty Handed's New Profile Hangar
Post by: Empty Handed on January 29, 2015, 02:14:08 AM
Thanks!

I envisage the Il-31 as sort of a Su-7ised Il-28. Generally Ilyushin's answer to the Fitter family using an existing fuselage barrel for ease of production (in theory). So new 50-60ish degree sweep wings. New nose intake. Single engine in the fuselage replacing the bomb-bay. Something of the order of a Lyulka AL-7F which has similar smash to the Tumansky R-15 of MiG-25 fame - so supersonic performance via brute force rather than any finesse!

The Il-31M features revised intake geometry (principally auxiliary air inlets), uprated engine (AL-7M perhaps?) and a spine for better aerodynamics/more avionics.

I have a few export customers in mind and a plaything for the PVO coming up next. It may be interesting to speculate on an Ilyushin Fencer equivalent?? Maybe a Fencer-ised Il-54 with fuselage engines rather than podded in a revised aft fuselage. Sort of what the Il-102 was to the Il-40.

Sorry for the ramble.  ;)

No need to apologise.  I like your innovation here :).  You had me confused a bit though as I was trying to work out which Ilyushin project design you had based your profile upon.

Given the high performance of the Il-31, an interceptor variant for the PVO was almost inevitable. This was the Il-31P Fissure-D:

(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48509693681_4bab327c97_b.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2gUCRSZ)Ilyushin Il-31P 'Fissure-D' PVO (https://flic.kr/p/2gUCRSZ) by Matthew Palmer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/166545368@N08/), on Flickr

The Indian Air Force was the first export customer. Initially they received Il-31D Fissure-Bs, a downgraded variant with simplified avionics, intake geometry and a downrated engine. These proved unsatisfactory and later India received the Il-31MD variant which, while still not as potent as the Soviet's own Il-31M, was a considerable improvement. Here is an Indian Il-31D performing a somewhat colourful flypast after an exercise:

I've always felt that the US Navy needed some kind of Tu-16 Badger analogue. So what if Martin and the USN Bureau of Aeronautics, concerned with the viability of the seaplane deterrent, developed a conventional land-based long-range patrol bomber from as many P6M components as possible?

Pretty interesting!  I like the fuselage color and the weathering you did.  Did you mean for the other roundel to be peeking through underneath the canopy?  Makes me want to create a mental story of a plane that was perhaps either bought as surplus, captured and test flown by the new owners, etc.

Thanks. Yes its an ex-French aircraft gifted to Syria. I wanted it to already have a story to tell before it got to its current user. I don't know why but I just can't do a factory-fresh bird.

Really unusual!  I think I see what looks like the tail of an XB-51 there.  Is that its intake underneath the cockpit?  It would certainly have a wickedly tall nose gear, but it almost doesn't seem as though there'd be room for it if one accounts for a cockpit tub and any radar and avionics up in the nose.

Post by: Empty Handed on October 30, 2017, 07:42:03 PM
It all started as a single Oly engined scaled-down Victor as a Buccaneer alternative turned British U-2 type.

It is indeed the engine intake under the cockpit. I thought the Victor's bulged throat (for lack of a better term) would make a great intake.

It is pure Victor from the intake lip aft. The cockpit section is a MiG-27 one (as I have one spare) with underside cut down slightly to un-mask the intake. The cockpit is scaled correctly for a 1/72 MiG-27 cockpit to be married to a 1/144 Victor fuselage, plus or minus a pixel. The nose is based on that of an Atlas Cheetah D but is not scaled. The wings are Victor minus the intake sections moved forward to the original wing root.

As for landing gear, I think bicycle would be the best way to go with outriggers deployed from the Whitcomb bodies/Küchemann carrots on the trailing edge.

Its really meant to be an evolved kludge as only the Brits can do.

New planes are pretty, but there's always a story behind the ones with some weathering and grunge to them indicating hard use.  Very nice work!

Ah, I see...  You'll have to forgive me for seeing the XB-51 tail and not the Victor (I'm a Yank, after all....  Ha!)  You know, I'm almost embarrassed to say I hadn't even thought about a bicycle/outrigger gear layout but you're right, that would look at home there.  Looks like it would still have to be pretty tall though in consideration of the overall size of the intake (not a criticism, just an observation).  As "evolved kluges" go, it's a pretty interesting one.

Beautiful work!!  I'd love to see more of the Mikoyan E-152SPD.  What kind of intake do you have on that one, I really couldn't see one?

Thank you!

The 152SPD is something of a Flagonised variant with fuel in the spine and NACA style intakes just ahead of the cockpit to permit a significant radar. Hopefully the pics below show it a bit better. I have no idea why I changed the fin.

Those intakes remind me of another Sukhoi prototype heavy fighter, but I can't remember its designation off the top of my head.

The Reconnaissance Meteor looks great.

What additional information can you provide on the "Standard Derived Heavy ASM" shapes shown on your Butterfly Tail F-84Q?  I find this missile shape intriguing.

Thanks. The missile started life as a completely fictional Soviet AAM but the strakes put me in mind of a Tartar/Standard (albeit with much enlarged rear fins). I envision it as something of a heavyweight Maverick with a similar EO-guidance system to the early 65s but with a lot more punch both in terms of kinetics and warhead. I went with a AIM-4 colour scheme just because I feel it is underused and I like it. I think it just about conceivable that the F-84Q could have held on long enough with ANG & AFRES units for someone to hang some early EO-guided ordnance on one at the end of the sixties. Hope that helps.

Over the weekend I was playing with the idea of a slightly earlier British nuclear deterrent and what delivery platforms would be available for it in the 1949-53 timeframe. Since this is too early for the V-Bombers (other than prototypes toward the end of the period) and the Lincoln was not deemed survivable as a freefall bomber, I thought about a stand-off solution for the much maligned Lincoln.

Below is my concept for an all-Bristol Theseus streamlined Lincoln (no need for defensive armaments if it is stand-off) armed with a (very) proto-Blue Steel, the Blue Oak. The performance wouldn't be a patch on OTL Blue Steel but wouldn't have to be, even a 20 mile range is going to be enough to make a difference for our intrepid Lincoln crew.

The pace of development would most likely mean the V-Bombers come online before this would but I reckon that it would at least reach the point of carrying test shapes. I for one find this confluence of eras too enticing to resist and I hope it is of some interest.
