Title: WIG Torpedo Bomber
Post by: ed s on March 02, 2013, 01:03:24 PM
I'm jumping in with a 1/72 WIG (Wing In Ground effect) torpedo bomber.  Here's a quick look at what I'm starting with. The basic parts are from an old Monogram Do-17, along with some floats and jet engines. Lots to do. I expect to start cutting plastic tomorrow.

I always enjoy your projects Ed - you start out with an innocuous pile of parts and end up with a great model.

Making some progress (finally) on this. First picture shows the wings with new leading edges. I wanted a broader chord, so I added some sheet styrene between the leading edges of the kit parts and glued the pieces together. You can also see where I removed the existing DO-17 engine nacelles and added some styrene strips to strengthen what was left of the wing.

Here is the fuselage with some strip styrene and miscellaneous parts to make a cockpit interior.

And here is the cockpit with some paint and some quick details.

(Wow, that macro lens sure does amplify the defects. But the canopy will be closed and the details will be hard to see anyway. It will just give the "impression" that there is some detailing inside.)

Another shot of the cockpit before I glue the fuselage together.

A quick update on today's progress. The first photo shows the wings after filling with epoxy and sanding. The little square piece in front with the brass rods is the wing center section. The brass rods will hold the wings at the correct angle. It's all epoxied and ready for installation.

This photo shows the wing center section in place with the rods to hold the wings aligned.

Finally, this photo shows the general configuration. The wings and floats aren't glued on yet. Things are just stacked up for a quick photo. The front of the WIG is to the right.

She's looking good man.  I'd call the surgery a success!  Your putty-foo is strong!  8)

Here's the latest update on this. I'm finishing the PSR. I just have a little filling and contouring to do around the wingtip - float joint. This is also a test/learning experience for me. I just took the pictures with my new tablet and this is my first post using the tablet.

WIG Torpedo Bomber is pushing envelope of cool into new territory  :o
Totally cool  8)

Keep thinking of it as a jet powered WIG racer that can go 300 or 400 or 500 mph.
Don't know what body of water race would be held on.

Wow I never knew Mr Surfacer came in navy colors. If it was mine, I'd be tempted to slap the decals on and call it done.

It sure looks like a million bucks!

Developed by Valmet in the early 50's to meet a Finnish naval requirement for a long range, high speed torpedo bomber, the DT 31 Kraken was the first WIG (wing in  ground effect) to enter production. They served with all of the nations of the Pan Baltic Federation and were a common sight patrolling the North Sea supporting the Norwegian oil fields. They were also a export success.  One of the biggest users was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They were insturmental in breaking the Russian Imperial fleet in the Black Sea. The Krakens were responsible for sinking more Russian ships than any other asset, including the superbattleship Czar Nikolas III.It was at the begining of one battle that Admiral Baron Van Klingersbergermuellersohn issued his famous command "Release the Krakens."

The torpedo is made from the front of an old 1/32 missile (I think it was supposed to be an R530 from a Mirage, but it was really inaccurate.) that I cut the wings off of. Then the aft portion was the tail end of an F-100 fuel tank that I used to make the engine pods. I trimmed the fins to size. The propeller blades are punched from .005" styrene using my Waldron set, then glued in place.

It scales out to about a 21" diameter which is large for most airborne torpedoes, but I needed something large to look right on the Kraken
