Folks,
Please post any ideas or suggestions or problems here. I know there will be some, especially in the early days, so please be patient.
Regards,
Greg
-
Only minor issues - the CAPTCHA for the forum registration is really difficult to make out. Once I entered the correct sequence, I got an database error (a timeout error) but I was able to log in.
-
I had the same issue.
Also, if you don't mind a nitpick? "Sparring" should be spelt with two 'r's. :D
-
Yes, I had some dificulty seeing the correct letters in the captcha, also...
I don´t know if it is a problem with my computer/internet settings but I cannot see emoticons and some other small images (only a blank square and a small red cross)...?
-
Also, if you don't mind a nitpick? "Sparring" should be spelt with two 'r's. :D
Nitpick away! Fixed!
-
I will look into the Captcha.
Re the Similes etc, yes there is a problem - I am looking into it.
Regards,
Greg

Hi!--just arrived here. Thanks for the invite. Seems that many of the graphics here, at least on my computer, are merely a red "X" in a box. In the "reply" page, all the "smileys" have their "name", but not their image.
Any explanations?
-

True, but as we've all seen on various forums, some folks do to tend to go 'spare', so Sparing Room would be appropriate.
:)
-
Yep basically the same issues. The option to listen to the letters works well though. That's how I registered.

I experienced the same problem myself during the registration process and again while making changes to my member profile to add my avatar and some other tweaks.

Same thing again while posting this comment. Had to open a new page and close the original at which point, my comment had been posted. Certainly odd and hopefully it can be resolved.

Not urgent and probably not an issue that affects everyone, but do you know if Simple Machines offer a mobile interface for their forums. I know some forum software does. Trying to post from an iPhone is a pain, it's one of the things that bugged me on the other forum.
Cheers,
Chris

I believe they do, but I'm not certain. There is also this: http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2504
Needs to be enabled by Greg too, but it's easy and instructions are in that link.

Thanks for the suggestion guys - looking into now.
Be careful Talos, proving you know something about working with the SMF software is a good way to volunteer for additional duties...:)

Bah!
I'm just skilled in Google-fu.
-
I'm also having the issue of having to open up a new tab and close the old one. Nothing insurmountable though.

A huge round of applause for jcf who has corrected the smiley problem!

Thanks Jcf :)
And those pesty little red x in white squares? what are they and why they don't go away...?

I don't actually see them - more info please?

Hello
I get these in my screen ever since the beginning; is just me (my computer/internet setting) or is this the image others get...?
-
Odd! I don't see that. Anyone else?
-
Yep, and if you place the cursor on one and select view image or open in new tab/window what have you (browser dependent) it gives a 404 "Page Not Found Error".
I think it may be a setting in the Themes controls.
-
Odd! I don't see that. Anyone else?
Yep.
-
These are the URLS for the two mystery icons:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/icons/kisi.gif
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/icons/saatpro.gif
Both return a 404 error.
BTW the "? in a Square"/"red X in white box" do not show up in Firefox on my Mac, but do in Safari.
However, when View Page Source is selected in Firefox, the URLs are there in the html.
There is a similar problem on the Child Board pages:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/on.gif
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/Themes/green_theme_v2_2/images/off.gif
In Firefox the first column says New Posts or No New Posts, in Safari it is the
"? in a blue square" that returns a 404 error when Open Image is selected.
-
Ok that makes things a bit clearer - I am using Firefox hence no problems.
Will look into...or else you lot can change over to firefox ;)
-
Yeah, I'm getting the same problem with the missing images. I'm using Google chrome, but it happens for me in Safari as well.
-
Working on...please be patient :ouch:
-
A thought, just my 2d... while I think these emoticons are cute, I also do think they're overpoweringly large...
-
Odd! I don't see that. Anyone else?
Yes I do. Everything seems to work thou, just no pics in the new post boxes.
Sorry if I've just wrecked your day there Greg.
-
For sobody that cn't spel wort a spitt, can we get a spelchekr? Pleez? :-* :-* :-*
Or am I stupid and missed it somewhere?
-
I did activate it right at the start - unfortunately a server problem has appeared to disable it.
Will see what I can do.
In the meantime we won't make fun of your spelling prowess...well not too much!
Regards,
Greg

Hi Xenia,
I agree and I'll be looking into options.

I chose the current smileys since they allowed us to have a different look. I am happy to change if the majority want them changed. What do people prefer?
Regards,
Greg
-
Personally, I'm not too sure about the new smilies. They seriously affect spacing of the lines . And some are rather ambiguous, I think (counteracting their intention of making things clearer). The "sad" one - :( -, for example, looks more sulky than sad. Or the"roll eyes" - ::) -, which doesn't roll the eyes, but looks like someone who didn't get the joke. :D
And a "thumbs-up" would be great to have. "Worship", too, but not as necessary.
 This one's great, though. Describes my current medical condition to a T. *blows-nose-for-100th-time-today* Damn trunk plague.

I am of the same opinion, while they are definitely different, the larger emoticons certainly do create problems for spacing. I usually use the original :^) or ;^) in most cases and avoid the animated versions.

Is this just me?
In the other schemes, the Quick Reply box was just fine, but in this latest one, it doesn't wrap - it just keeps writing on a single very very long line, scrolling the window sideways as I type... rather annoying! :P

I've just discovered what you mean, never noticed that feature before. Yeah, it doesn't wrap for me either at the moment.

I am seeing the same thing with quck reply activated and I suspect it has something to do with the script needing some tweaking to establish the box size. Finding that particular script is the challenge.
-
In regards to the Quick Reply box, it works fine in the Blue version of the theme,
so if one really needs to use QR, then, for the moment, changing their Theme
setting is the way to go.

So the glorius writers of the code are not organized enough to actually standardize settings? Oy! Where is the quality control and metrics to whip these guys into compliance? :^)

So the glorius writers of the code are not organized enough to actually standardize settings? Oy! Where is the quality control and metrics to whip these guys into compliance? :^)
The Green version is a modification of the SMF Default-Curve Theme done by Tah Zonemaster, not
the SMF team. New theme variations can be created by anyone, so any standardization is up to the
individual creator. So, if one doesn't use a particular feature, they may not be aware of a problem.
The final solution is to turn off features like QR and limit language settings, like some forums,
which I personally prefer not to do, or we just accept the nitnoys that are part and parcel of
our wondrous Digital Age.

The only suggestion I have is to reduce the amount of blank space on either side in a window, to allow for more horizontal room with pictures on the forum.

Hi Folks, interesting forum....<thumbsup><yes there should be one> ;)
1. I got all the error messages when trying to register, plus it took agaes for the verification e-mail to come through, making me think it hadn't worked and causing me to go back to the registration process for more error messages. I got in eventually (obviously), but I can see less patient people giving up....
2. When trying to find the forum at work, without the benefit of the invitation e-mail (thanks, BTW), I tried a websearch for "beyond the sprues", and all I got was the following link, helpfully posted on Gekko Graphics' page:
www.beyondthesprues.com (http://www.beyondthesprues.com)
The trouble is that all there is at that link is a page from Simple Machines saying "there's going to be something really cool here soon", but with no clue about how to find the already-running forum. Surely there should be something there, even if only one button saying "here be the forum"?
Best of luck, anyway!
-
Yeah, we're experiencing a few technical issues but are gradually working through them. The frontpage (i.e. that you see at www.beyondthesprues.com (http://www.beyondthesprues.com) will be changed in the new year.
Regards,
Greg

Think you need a new/better spam filter........ Sipbreemicibe is getting to be a bit of a pain (though he can probably sell you a medicine for it...)
-
I sent Greg an email on this. He must be at a Barbie today. ;D
-
Not quite - was asleep. Jon used the button though:
It isn't so much an automatic filter though as more of idiots (I would use other words but I don't want to offend anyone) who post their crap. As soon as one of them does show themselves, we try to hit them straight away. That said, we are looking at some changes to make it harder for them.
Keep reporting any of them though folks.
Regards,
Greg

I was wondering if it's possible to have an option in 'My Profile' where you could select what you'd like to appear when someone picks 'Show unread posts since last visit'. There are numerous subjects which just don't appeal to me, and to have an option which would -- erm, sort of filter out what I'm not interested in, would save a lot of time trolling through what has been posted since the last visit.
-
Any filter would really require the members who make the posts remember to add in the appropriate filter words I think. Will have a look into though.
-
I was thinking more of a list of the boards and/or 'child' boards Greg, where you could go into our own 'Profile' and click on the boards you want to see frequently. It wouldn't switch off anything when you look at the main page, just when you click on 'Show unread posts since last visit' or 'Show new replies to your posts'
-
Hi Robert,
there is an 'Ignore Boards' option in your profile, and as we re-vamp the forum and get its format
worked out, you will end up with more options.
Profile->Modify Profile->Ignore Boards Options
Cheers
-
That's what I had in mind, thanks Jon for the heads up

Help I can't PM anyone here !!
on every try at posting, I always get the "timed out" message but by hitting "back" & "post" again I can sometimes post on the forum itself.
Site is very slow or un-responsive in the A.M. (6am to midday Oz Daylight-saving time).
cheers Raafif

See here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=253.0). That might help for the meantime. We are working to remove the timeout problem once and for all though.

An issue that keeps recurring for me, is when trying to access threads which have very large photos attached (pixels wise) and lots of them (F-35 thread for example), my computer just won't open the thread. It just freezes up --
any suggestions ?
-
It sounds as though the problem might be on your end. Is anyone else experiencing similar?
I will have a look at the F-35 thread to see about trimming/compressing some of the images.
-
It's not just the F-35 thread Greg, some images which are posted are way bigger than what my monitor displays and it's a 22" one. Then when there's a lot of them it's possible that the ISP I use just slows or stops the connection. Even the Hughes Hercules thread where I posted a bunch of photos does it now (I tried to down size the pics by using PhotoBucket as all of them are in the 5 mg size originally)
Anyway, I can only get out of the freeze by doing the CTrL, Alt, Delete procedure.
-
It still sounds as though it might be a issue on your end though..unless of course others here report the same problem. Either way though, I will endeavour to go through the threads to compress/trim some of the larger images. This might take a while though so please be patient with me. To help me, just PM me any particular threads (such as the F-35 one you refer to) that you do note problems with. This will speed up the process. ;)
-
While my PC doesn't have problems loading threads with big pics, I'd also welcome a solution to that. Don't get me wrong, big pics are great, but in some cases they're just far too big to be of any actual use. Take the F-35 thread, for instance. Of the recent bomb drop pic, I can only see the F-35's forward fuselage. Anything aft of the pilot needs to be scrolled sideways.
Over on ARC, the software automatically resizes pics that exceed a certain size (to be determined by the admin, AFAIK) to that size. Clicking them will toggle the full size view. Clicking them again will revert them to their reduced size. The maximum width is 1024 pixels, I think. Anything larger will be reduced to a width of 1024 pixels. Personally, I think that's a good solution. I don't know whether our forum software has a similar feature, though.
-
I set the max width to 1024, if this isn't large enough I'll bump it up.
:icon_fsm:

Thanks Jon.

EDIT:
Works! :) Brilliant! Clicking the image will now toggle the original size, clicking it again will go back to the reduced size.
Good work, Jon! :)
-
That's loverly. This has been my biggest pet peeve on the forum since we got the speed issues resolved.
Cheers,
Logan
-
Well done guys, for the first time I could open the F-35 thread in an instant, no freeze up now (--keeps fingers crossed--)
-
if anyone has any particular threads causing issues just let me know.

Hey guys, I'm having a very minor issue lately in regards to new posts. I always check the forum by going to "unread since last visit" and then go through them all. Lately after I do that and get that list down to zero if I go back to the "forum index" it will say that there is a new post in the "physical models" section yet if I go there via any of the links to that section (including the "new" button) there is NOTHING. I have to click "mark all messages read" to get it to clear and even that doesn't work until the 4th or 5th time. Just wanted to let you know.

Same thing I am experiencing and sometimes the refresh option works and sometimes not. Figured it was just a delay brought on by the server but there may be more to it.
-
Yes, I have noticed that. Am looking into. Although a minor annoyance, I don't see it as a major issue though.
-
Idea as an adjunct to Buy-Sell-Trade, and I'm willing to do the work on keeping it updated if people keep me informed... on a collectibles board I'm a member of, we have a Who Wants What spreadsheet on Google Documents so we can either check others' wants against our stashes or more commonly keep an eye out (the war between Transformers collectors and scalpers is pretty cutthroat, so we try to help each other out when we can so nobody gets fleeced.). I'd be glad to set something similar up for here...
-

Me either but the thing that got me was its always in "physical models" even if no one has posted in there since my last visit. Just seemed rather odd. Thanks for taking a look man.
-
It is obviously a side effect of the recent change to that area - just need to work out what specifically.

-
Greg, here's the doc that inspired my suggestion:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ai_584BXHuGrdHNMTXlkQ3pOWWstQTRaYmRTRnl0Y3c#gid=0
Don't know if non-members can view it, but it's worth a try. Failing that, I'll screencap and post that.
-
Looks good. I will put it to the membership to see if members are interested.

I am slack at times I know...but I have finally put the poll for this suggestion up - see here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=2351.msg33297#msg33297).
-
Just stumbled on a small issue which happened when I changed my email address in my 'Profile'. The system didn't send me a conformation email to re-activate my account (thanks to Jeff I can now access the forum). But then I've also notice recently when someone sends me a PM, I'm not getting a notification email either. I just checked my Profile settings and I see that it should be doing that as it is set right.
-
We will look into. Has anyone else experienced similar?
-
Not the same situation, but similar...I no longer get email notifications when people send me Personal Messages. I wonder if there's some setting that needs tweaked deep within BTS.
Brian da Basher
-
The PM notification to my eMail address appears to be working in my case as evidenced by a notification the other day for a PM that was sent by Bill P to me.
-
I double-checked my settings and all seems in order there as far as I can tell.
No biggie. I'm usually here every day anyway. Just thought it was odd.

-
Suggestion for Ideas and Inspiration: Maybe add a subforum of "Build Planning" for guys still in planning phases, then add links to related BP threads in the first post of each I&I thread? (For example, linking to my F-15SE/Special and Mike's F-15SMT+ threads in post 1 of the F-15 thread, kinda see who's doing what that may benefit from shared experience.)
-
Anyone else having to wait a looong time for connections when posting or navigating? It's been happening to me for the last few days ... but only on BtS :icon_crap:
And has suddenly sped up since posting the above ... obviously the Forum Pixies just needed a nudge ;D
-
No problem here, though keen to hear if others have also experienced similar.
-
Last saturday I couldn't load BtS between 8.30pm & 9pm local eastOz time - tried several times but gave up. Recently the site has been hanging-up when I try to make a post (doesn't appear to be a "timed-out" problem) - have to kill my browser & try again.
I once got email notification of a PM but the PM never showed up here on the site.
Sounds like we need to buy more bandwidth ??? The downside of being a popular, very active site ;D
-
Okay, here is the problem. Since last week I,ve been unable to view a lot of pictures linked from external sources. Which means that BtS banner and icons, as well as the majority of pics in the profile section, which I most-frequently visit, would show up in my android browsers as broken links...... If I have access to its web address, I can still view them directly, but I cannot view them via BtS.
I tested both at home and at my local library with the same result. Would you and/or your crew look into this?
Thanks in advance.
-
Hmmmm, I just checked BTS on my Android Phone and had no problem...checked a few different sections and everything worked fine.
-
I been having the same issues with pictures, myself. This started about two weeks ago. I had the same problem on other sites, too. When I contacted my carrier (Sprint here in Oklahoma,U.S.A.) I was told it was due to a problem they were working on. It isn't to be finished till after the first.
-
I haven't experienced any problems. That said, please let us know if others expereince similar and if it persists. It sounds like it might be a problem on your end however if there is anything we can do to alleviate the situation, we certainly will try.
-
Update has been made and cleanup done see here:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=2388.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=2388.0)
-
I'm pretty sure "My problem" is definitively on my end. I'm not.holding my breath for them to do it by when they said. On the other hand, I like the new "All" option. Glad you have done it as I don't always remember what went before.
-
I'm not ruling out the possibility that my issue could be caused by something on my end. Right now I'm still figuring things out, the only things I know for sure right now being that the problem holds for both mobile and non-mobile network connections, so I doubt it has anything to do with network filtering (Wi-Fi in my local library, for example, blocks any videogame-related websites)......
-
This morning I tried again...... the problem seems gone all in a sudden...... guess I likely won't know what's going on......
-

With my last two posts I got an error saying my request had timed out.
Hitting Refresh seems to have allowed my posts to take, but it's odd considering that it only took me a minute or less to compose each post.

Ok then, that confirms it is not just me. I had the same happen yesterday but wasn't sure if it was simply on my end. Will look into.
-
Folks if anyone else is getting a similar issue, just follow Brian's advice for now (Hit the page refresh option on your browser) - that seems to rectify things. We will be looking into this in the meantime.
-
I've been getting the same thing too, but also the site is extremely slow to get on and navigate around at the moment
EDIT: just happened as I was posting this post. I hit the 'back' button and then re-clicked on post and it did
-
I've been noticing that the site has been rather slow to load pages yesterday and today. Is it just me?
Oh, and I'm still experiencing the main page (home) indicating there are new posts (in the physical models and profiles and pixels) when there are none.

Still working on the slowness issue - server related I am afraid.
Re the indication of new posts, it is not just you. I believe it may sometimes result when someone has edited an existing post. It won't necessarily show up as a new post when you look but somehow the software indicates it.
-
Only reason I brought it up is I could have sworn you posted that the speed issues had been fixed just the other day. Don't mind me :-\

Oh how I wish!!! They have improved IMHO but there are still some intermittent ones.
-
Something I have noticed recently is a delay in eMail notification from the forum to my own eMail account for PMs that I have actually read and responded to and subsequently removed from my PM in-box. I thought at first it was just me not paying attention to events and time but not the case this morning when I received an eMail notification of a message to me via PM from Gingie (Graeme Davidson) that I had read, replied to, and then deleted from my PM in-box. That was two days ago and the PM notification just showed up this morning to my eMail account. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Trying to determine if it is my eMail that is delaying the notifications or the forum software at this point as it is really not clear what is to be blamed for the delays.
-
hmm, same thing happened to me with those PM you sent. I thought it was because my DND Blackberry was holding them, but if it was happening in your end too....

Glad to see it is not a case of old age and senility creeping in to the problem :)
-
Jon had sent me a PM, and I did the same as you Jeff, responded to it while on the forum, then the notice showed up in my 'Receive' emails a couple of days later ---
-
Thanks for the input Robert, this is indicating that there is a feature or setting that needs to be looked at and damned if I know what that particular feature or setting is but I suspect Jon can get 'er done :)
-
Just noticed the same thing Kit.

'Nowt visible in our controls, maintenance logs etc. Most likely it's a GoDaddy issue. :icon_zombie:

I recently discovered that I haven't visited the "Current Builds"/"Physical Models" section of the site in several weeks. It appears that it just doesn't show as containing new posts for me when I look at the main forum page. The "Profiles and Pixels" and "Stories" sections light up in bold when they contain new posts, but neither "Current Builds" nor "Physical Models" do so. ???
Could the "Physical Models" child boards be moved to show up on the child boards bar on the main forum page, sorta like they do for the "Ideas and Inspiration" section? Or would that create confusion with the "Profiles and Pixels" and "Stories" sections?
-
Hi Moritz,
I understand what you are asking for and from what I can see, it would seem that splitting the sub-forum Physical Models and raising it up one level to become a full forum might take care of that issue. Then we would have a separate forum for Physical Models and the child boards within would have the same rank/status/level as the other forums that were in the Current Builds sub-forum.
Not sure if we really want to do that but maybe putting it to a vote to see how the others feel about it and we can go with the majority decision.
Other options:
1. Leave it all in one forum but promote the child boards to the same status as Physical Models, Profiles and Pixels, Stories, Aero-space. In the process it might be necessary to rename them to reflect the association with the original Physcial Models forum:
Physical Models - Sea
Physical Models - Land
Physical Models - Scifi and Fantasy
Physical Models - Other
To be honest, I am not keen on another change but it can be done.
2. Combine the child boards (Sea, Land, Scifi and Fantasy, Other) again under Physical Models (as it was previously before it was divided up).

Yep, that's probably the only thing that'll work. I tried some other relationship changing and that made
no difference.
One thing I noticed is that we have everything under General Category, if we are to rearrange things
I'd go further, add new categories and split it out that way. It won't change the look or arrangement in
any startling way, but some folks might need to redo their ignore preferences.
;)
-
Having a look into guys. Not sure if I will find anything though.
At least at this stage it is simply a relatively minor inconvenience/annoyance an not a disruptive problem. ;)

Might be an option - let's look into.

What's with these weird pumping and broken hearts ?
-
My eyes! My eyes! It BUUUUUUUUUUUUUURNSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
lol
Kit, I think Greg took a story I told in jest as a challenge...
-
The new colour scheme is ghastly: please change it back!. In particular, the slightly-darker-pink writing on a light-pink background is nearly unreadable and literally does hurt my eyes: no joke. ???
-
It's fine for a day, but the text on the light pink is a little light to read. I like a little April Fools fun.
Cheers,
Logan
-
Where I am, April 1 isn't for another nine hours... that's GMT-8, so if he's GMT+12 that's probably the April Fool's joke for the year.
I always thought April Fool's pranks were things like pop-its under the toilet-seat or a Baby Ruth bar floating in the punchbowl... LOL
-
Good grief...I already changed it twice and it keeps going back!!! Now you removed the ability to change the theme??!!!
Greg...the pitchfork and torch mob is on the move!!!! And yeah...April 1 isn't for another 6 hours here but remember Aussies greet the new day before almost all of us ;)

Well played guys! I thought someone had messed with my PC for a second or three!

Sorry guys/gals - I have now made it so you can change it back...if you wish to.
Not my fault most of you are slow entering thenew Day. ;)

Ah, never even thought about what day it was yesterday here, never mind today anywhere else... or something like that...... :-\
Upside: found some better smileys! :)

Aaaagh this colour scheme is absolutely hideous!! Not to mention hard to read...

having said that, where do I bring torches, pitchforks, tar, and feathers?

BWAHAHAHA!!!!!
Just follow the mob man. We go were we go!
-
Enough please, I am really struggling to read any of this, my vision is bad enough at the moment and this is killing me!

Well you can change your own look back to pink if you really want to...

Hmm! Well, April 1st was the furthest from my mind, my first thoughts were 'oh! crap, the forum's been hacked'

Now to find out how to get the pretty blue back!
my first thoughts were 'oh! crap, the forum's been hacked'
My first thought was 'oh crap! Greg's put the wrong kind of mushroom into his stew'.

The forum is back to as it was for me Xenia, I must have the default settings for it --

If you wish to change the colour scheme of your profile (including even back to pink), follow the instructions here (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=123.0).

What happened to the site banner? it's not loading.
-
Echo Frank's comment about the banner. Just noticed that today (1/29). Also I have been noticing the site has been loading very slowly in general regardless of what actions I'm trying to perform for the past week or so. Issue is unique to this site.
-
Seems fine now. Will keep an eye on things.

Yesterday the banner wasn't appearing when I came on the forum, and it's been really slow for the last week. Seems fine today though ----

Incredibly slow this last couple of days, and yesterday while trying to expand a posted pic, the site just crashed. Pop-up said website could not be found ----

Banner issue was because PhotoBucket was down
I've also noticed a speed issue.

Now I keep getting this every 2nd click, or even 2 out of 3.
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
-
The last couple of days the site has been really slow, with numerous "Can not display page' messages and multiple 'refresh' having to be used. Also the 'attach image' feature disappeared one day although it seems to be back now but I've not tried it to upload a photo yet.
And now while trying to post this, there's no 'Post' button, I had to abandon the reply I was doing and redo the message to get the 'post icon to show

Been having issues myself, mainly because the previous tenants took a power cable with a unique plug connector that can't be replaced until the new year meaning that while we have an internet connection there is no power to it. Connection is currently via my phone being used as a mobile hotspot.

Ditto in Ontario Canuckistan. Can take up to 3 browser refreshes to get a post accepted.

I haven't noticed any problems lately.

Seems to be working for me. Anyone else?

I'm getting it, right under "Hello Old Wombat" & immediately above "Show new replies to your posts".

Same here
-
I've just got "Beyond The Sprues" in the top left corner & "... where imagination trumps reality" in the top right corner.
::)
-
I moved the banner off of PB, for obvious reasons, and it now lives in the attachments folder, as stated it shows with default theme,
which means I'll have to tweak the settings for the other themes.
I'll get to it when I can as we've had some family stuff crop up which needs to be addressed before anything else.
Thanks for your patience.

Yeah! I do all that all the time Jon, doesn't change anything though.
-
OK, this is odd, I checked your profile and you're using the forum default 'Grasslands Curve Variation',
as are the majority of users, and I can see the full banner. Ditto Greg, etc. So why it's not showing
for you is a conundrum.
-
Do you think it's anything to do with Win10. There's been a number of big updates over the last couple of weeks. The latest only a couple of days ago
-
Jon / Robert: I've been running Windows 10 for about 1/2 year now and accepted all the updates.
So far no issues. My browser is Chrome Version 59.0.3071.115 (Official Build) (64-bit).
-
I use Chrome and this is what I see
-
Robert and Andonio,
what is the configuration you are using on your browser?, what extensions, pop-up blockers, ad-blockers
etc.
Also go to your profiles and preview the theme 'SMF Default Theme - Curve' and tell me if you see the
banner image.
Profile>Modify Profile>Look and Layout>Current Theme (change)
Carl, could you also list your configuration, please.
Thanks, guys.
-
I'm having the same problem and have cycled through the themes and made them default (including the pink themes) and I still can't see the banner images. It's not a plugin issue - I switched to Edge (which I've never used to log into this site and has no add-ons) and the images are still missing.
In the HTML code for the "top-section" div (where the header images would be), the racing snail gif is there, but links to the images are missing.
-
Jon:
Screenshot of my current profile settings is attached.
-
Same here, but,it doesn't bother me since the tasty things are inside ;D
-
The HTTP link to the logo image in the attachments folder doesn't work for me (top-section >> forumtitle).
The new location of the logo image seems to be off limits for ordinary users.
-
Try it now folks.
Hosted on SmugMug for the moment, it will eventually be put up in the site root-folder as a permanent solution.
-
Works now. Looks different; was "Sprues" always green?
-
Rearranged things again, now Green on the green theme, Blue on the blue theme.

What's with the "new line" markers (as below) that are appearing now? ???
-
Errr...beats me.
Just did a software update though and there appears to become glitches so please bear with me.
-
Something else now Greg, when I opened the forum this morning on my desktop computer, the new GB logo and running title were all screwed up. Just a bunch of white squares. Then when I tried to sign in it kept saying my verification timed out. Although when trying to come onto the forum with my cellphone, the GB logo is fine but still getting the message when trying to sign in.
-
Yup, I have to log in through the "Login" button, rather than through the front page. :-\
-
It appears that the odd code adding has gone away, at least for the moment,
I did some pruning of old smiley sets that are unused, and some other general
housekeeping.
If anyone is still having issues, post here or PM me, I'll look into as soon as possible.
Busy at the moment helping my wife get ready to leave in two days to visit
her parents for a month.

When I try to sign in on my cell phone it's like how Guy says for me to. But it worked fine on my desktop tower this morning
-
Hmm, when I log in with either my iPhone or iPad I get the normal first page.
What model of phones are you guys using?
The front page URL is: http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php)
Check and see what path your phone is following, perhaps the glitches affected something.

Just signed in on my desktop tower and everything works fine. My cell phone though I still have to sign in with the button.
I just remembered another thing it says if I try using the sign-in feature which appears just under the logo on the left. It says the verification has timed out, logout and try again. But I haven't even got logged in yet.
-
I only ever use my PC - & all seems fine, now. :))

OK, there's two ways that can be used to sign in when you come onto the forum.
First way is at the top left under the logo aircraft.
It says 'Please login or Register'. Then under that are four rectangular boxes. Fisrt one is for your user name, second one is for your password, third one you can pick how long to have the session and the last one has a green background and says 'login'.
Second way to login is a bit further down in the set of names for pull down menus. It goes 'Home. Help. Search. Calendar. Login. Register'. OK, when I use my cell phone I have to use this 'login' way.
-
OK, I've never been directed to the login under the main menu, when I use the bookmark on my phone
it takes me to the front page login under the airplane.
Dunno why it's defaulting to the other login on your phone.
-
I currently can't log in the way I always have done using the log in under the airplane. I have to use the Login at the end of the menu bar. Been happening for a few days.
It's not a problem, just odd when something you've always done a certain way can't be done that way, but hey that's computers for you ;)
I'm using a laptop by the way.
Chris
-
OK, it's weird as the 'Quick Login' option is selected and should be visible
to all. :-\ :icon_zombie:
-
Jon, it is visible. It's just that when you put in your user name then the password, it then comes up with the message I've explained above.
-
Yup, just to confirm I try to use the quick log in and then get the classic "an error has occurred".
As said it's not a problem for me as there's a perfectly acceptable way around it. Only mentioned it in case it's symptomatic of something more serious.
Chris
-
Let me know what OS you're using on both computer and mobile devices, it may be
an SMF glitch.

I've got Win10 on my tower and Android on my LG3

Chrome latest
Win 10 latest
iOS 10.2.1 + Safari (always stay logged in)

I always log-out on both. Only way I can remember my password ;D ;D ;D
On my tower I use Google (not chrome), on my cell it's google but which version I don't know. Probable chrome I think.
-
Google Chrome and I always log in and out
Chris
-
Okey Dokey I've not been able to find anything, so far. :-\
-
From digging around it's probably a script issue, there was something similar with earlier versions,
however, I'm not sure where it lurks and I'm not an HTML/programmer type so I don't want to get
into messing about with templates.
Sorry guys, you may have to deal with it for a bit. :-X :icon_fsm:
-
Not a problem for me Jon. Thanks for looking

Just had the "front page" login crash on me again, had to enter via the login button.
Was working fine earlier this evening/morning.

I have been experiencing that same issue now for almost a year. Glad to see it is not just me that has been having problems. Was going to blame it on my browser (FireFox) or one of the Ad Blocker add-ons but I have Ad Blocker disabled for this forum but nothing changed as far as obtaining a quote option when making a comment. Works for me. What browser are you using?

What happens if you open the forum in a private or ingcognito page? If that works, it's probably a cookie or a cache issue.

As usual, Frank is on the beam. I get similar issues sometimes and clearing out the cache and rebooting my connection usually fixes them.

I think because I don't ever stay on the forum forever and login each time I come on the forum, is why a lot of issues I read about doesn't really happen with me. Not to say I haven't had issues, just not like these ones.

I have the same. The problem appears to be a Photobucket problem since that is where I have stored the images involved.

Don't use Photobucket.
Also, don't date robots (https://vimeo.com/12915013)

My home page is showing three of the four GB thumbnails at the top right, as "Sorry, This person moved or deleted this image"
Anyone else have that showing.
I have the same. The problem appears to be a Photobucket problem since that is where I have stored the images involved.
Have you paid your extortion money bill? ???
Problem is not on my end but PB's. Others are having same issue. I can't even login into account.

Don't use Photobucket.
Usually I don't have an issues.

PB Refund time. Unlimited storage forever.

Idiots! No UPS/battery backup? No backup generators? No core redundancy, clustering and/or failover services? This is a so 1970s data centre!

I've been getting a strange message today --- 'Server is under high stress, please try again later'
-
Hmmm...not seeing anything on my end.
-
Correction: I just received the same. Will watch and report back.
I am also seeing some issues on other websites so there may be something bigger going on.
-
It seems to be showing mostly when I click on 'Show new replies to your posts'

It seems to be showing mostly when I click on 'Show new replies to your posts'
Still happening, and it is just when I click on the above link.
-
Wonder if it's related to the Chinese attack on my emails yesterday? ???
My service provider confirmed that they'd gotten into my system (past the protection) disguised as a legitimate email from a company we do business with.
90+, each way, outgoing & incoming.
-
PS: What's happened with the emoji's ... or is it just me? ???
There are less of them & some of the code/descriptors have changed.
-
Yeah! I just noticed that the emojies have disappeared.
I've found another 'Error' message ---- when I clicked on Profile and then 'Show Posts'
This comes up ---
"Please try again later. This member's posts are not currently available due to high load on the server."
-
Also experienced that same message while logged in as a moderator.
-
I have raised the issue with the Hosting provider.
-
Both the errors I was getting seem to have been fixed now, at least they're working at the moment.
-
I tweaked some server settings, and it seems smoother.
-
Thanks Jon

Thanks Jon
Yes, cheers Jon. All seems well :)

For the last few days, the home page header has disappeared, just shows a white square with a no entry symbol in it. I tried the toggle arrow in the top right corner to see if that was what caused it and it wasn't.
All the GB thumbnails are showing though.
And when I first came into this thread to report this issue, I got kick out from being signed in ---

Looking into
-
I cancelled my Smugmug account, reducing expenditures, and I'll be putting the image up into a root folder
for the site, which is where it should have been all along.
I've been very busy with my temporary US Census job, it'll be over shortly.
Cheers, Jon

Hello O Worthy elders of the internet.
I had a few issues today trying to put up images for the Shilka Update build.
Initially I had 7 images in the post and the Forum server consistently errored out with a Database Error. I have an image of the Server Error reply but it is pretty non-specific and useless as to actually reason of failure.
So I was wondering is there a limit to the numbers of images that can included in a single post ?
There was a quote in there as well, which I also removed as part of the process to find out what was the problem, in case the server was parsing the Reply Text.
No biggie, eventually got around it by breaking the post up into 4 image chunks.
Cheers Brian T

I'm not a WEotI but I've found there's a limit on images - not sure if it's a number or total data size thing, though.
-
There are limits upon:
Max attachment size per post
Max size per attachment
Max number of attachments per post
But none that I am aware of if you are embedding using an external hosting service.
There are also Maximum allowed post size limits which may be triggering something here despite it being character total limited.
-
I think Brian da Basher is still marked as Moderator somewhere here. Is that a problem?
-
Well, if I see him start moderating posts I might get a little concerned... ;)

Is there a reason why Edge has BTS as 'Not Secure'

Is there a reason why Edge has BTS as 'Not Secure'
Hmmm...not sure.
-
Is there a reason why Edge has BTS as 'Not Secure'
Hmmm...not sure.
Same for me on Firefox.
-
Hmmm...all the security settings and related are working. ???
-
FWIW Goggle Chrome is also "Not secure"
-
It's not because MegaTech are being right jerks with you guys down there is it ?
-
This is what Firefox says:
Obviously I have visited the site before today but I delete browsing history automatically on closing Firefox.
-
It might be associated with the software update we did recently. Am investigating. I can assure you that having gone in and checked with the hosting company everything was shoeing ok on the security side. That said, am still investigating.
-
Odd, because I see the security certificate from GoDaddy.

I know - that's what's baffling me too.

If I go here: https://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html#hostname=https://beyondthesprues.com/ (https://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-checker.html#hostname=https://beyondthesprues.com/)
It looks fine.
Guy, what happens if you go to https://beyondthesprues.com/ (https://beyondthesprues.com/) ?
-
I'm working it right now
-
Sorted - if people make sure they are linked to https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php instead of http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php) it works.
-
That seems to have worked.
-
Which url do you guys have bookmarked:
http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php)
or
https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php (https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php)
If you're not using the one that begins https, then you'll get the "not secure" message regardless
of browser and it doesn't actually mean the site is "insecure", it's that the connection between
your device and the site is in the open. Edit the address on your bookmark by adding an s.
So, to recap, the difference between HTTP vs HTTPS is simply the presence of an SSL (secure sockets
layer) certificate. HTTP doesn’t have SSL and HTTPS has SSL, which encrypts your information so your
connections are secured. HTTPS also has TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol that HTTP lacks. HTTPS
is more secure than HTTP.

I'm assuming I had the http but I now, definitely, have the https bookmarked.

Working for me too --- thanks for sorting it out guys --
-
For the last few days the site has been very slow for me, and yesterday it bogged down until nothing was happening. Then during the evening it seemed work properly. But this morning the same thing is has happened, eventually going so slow it was taking minutes to open a page.
Any ideas ?
EDIT: and now it seems to be working normally again.
-
No answers, but I've had exactly the same behaviour, but I've also been getting timeout errors, and the 'Down for Everyone or Just Me' site
https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
was reporting that the Forum was down . . .
cheers,
Robin.
-
Server connection on the host end.
-
Thanks . . .all good here now.
cheers,
Robin.

A weird one just happened . . . when writing a post, I inserted some emojis in the middle of sentences. All the text in the sentence following where the emoji was placed was immediately reduced in size to the smallest size allowed. I could resize things back to normal, but when posted, the resize control codes were showing, so that I had to further edit the post to remove them . . .
Here is an example :-'When I insert an emoji. :o the following text is reduced . . .
When I resize it, the control codes are visible.'
cheers,
Robin.
-
errr...that is an odd one - can you point me to the post that this happened?
-
This one . . .
https://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=9995.msg189599#msg189599
cheers,
Robin.
-
Hmmm...I just played with that post a bit and removed all the font & size stuff and it worked fine.
-
Okay, thanks for looking, I'll keep an eye and see if it happens again . . .
cheers,
Robin.

We need one of those Social Credit *like* buttons*, so Beijing-style approval can be given for all the wonderful inspiration that's shared here.
I get tired thinking up new ways to compliment all of y'all.
