Hi All
Bought this one some time ago, it's not my usual scale but it was cheap !

As usual I have only a sketchy half arsed idea about this but i intend to turn this into an Orion style space liner. Time will tell

1/144, or smaller scale, spaceliner for SSTO operations? That could be very interesting indeed.
-
Like the train of thought. Looking forward to this

Hmmm food for thought, could put the main wings on with wingtip engines, a sorta poor mans Skylon.......

The Orion style space liner sound like a great idea (maybe call it the Rigel or the Betelgeuse). I think the molds for that kit were made by Homo Erectus, 1.5 million years ago. It's great fodder for non X-3 builds!

Hi all
A little update.
The engines are installed and the gaps left in the fuselage have been prepped for filler
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50943936483_2dcd90f435_k.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/2kBJZst) (https://flic.kr/p/2kBJZst) by Robomog (https://www.flickr.com/photos/54032744@N08/), on Flickr9
The air intake has been sealed and extended, the fuselage at this point curves in so lt will need to be filled but it should produce a nice looking triple curve.

I'm still undecided where to place the control deck, either up front or somewhere around the tail

Coming along. The exhaust bells look really good. Parts of a pen or aftermarket turned jobbies ?
-
Good idea. Coming along nicely.
-
Thanks guys.
Buzz, I'm a cheapskate the exhaust bells are pen parts :D
Any dead pen in our house is immediately descended upon for parts ;)

Exhaust bells look first class expensive
-
Hi all
A bit more progress, the body is together but it is not a good fit, nor is the nose so quite a lot of filler.
Also decided to put the control deck on the tail

Once this is all rubbed down its greeblie time !!!!
I've decided that this spaceship is the equivalent of a frontier aircraft a sort of Jack of all trades so a passenger/freighter hybrid, I'm going to keep it to roughly 1/144 scale. It's going to get some external tanks and maybe some external storage but at this stage any thing could happen with the details because it's all going to be made up on the spot ;)
Thanks for looking.............
Mog

You mean, it couldn't get into space all by itself with those magnificent Westinghouse engines? [/dripping_sarcasm]

;D ;D ;D

Looking so cool. Love ya work
-
Thanks buzz
A bit more progress
Theres going to be some more greebly work but I thought I would show you the mockup of the external freight, these are the space equivalent of shipping containers in various sizes.

The bulk of the PSR is done now just the odd pit, dip or pinhole to sort, time to start designing the decals, I do very few airline builds so any 1/144 decals in my stash are old and a bit suspect ::)

Looking great 'Mog
... the space equivalent of shipping containers in various sizes...
Excellent! Exo-atmospheric ISO containers ;D Nice one.

Yep :-* this is working for me >:D Soooo much PSR :P

Thanks guys
More coming soon

Hi all
Minor update.........
Turns out I havent added much to it in the way of greeblies, decided to keep it sleek and simple. Also sourced some bits to rig the shipping containers.

Shown here on its spray rig, should be entering the spray shop soon
Thanks for looking............

Really nifty design. Great work :-*
-
Another very cool concept - reminds me of the old atomic-powered bomber kit (also from Lindberg?) and I love the extra work you're putting in.
-
Zac, it was the Hawk 1/188 "Beta" I - Atomic-Powered Bomber XAB-1 (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/hawk-514-98-atomic-powered-bomber-xab-1--1172351)
I think Mog's spaceliner looks a bit like the Aurora Ragnarok Orbital Interceptor (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/aurora-251-orbital-interceptor--1034251)
or its earlier incarnation, the Around the World in 3 Hours Nuclear Airliner (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/aurora-129-98-nuclear-airliner--1178017)

Wow! YF-23 wings and a X-3 fuselage, almost. Ahead of it’s time.
-
Moving along very nicely
-
Thanks for the comments guys, some interesting stuff there !

Hi all
Getting closer to the final push, the spaceship is out of the spray booth and is under going painting of some of the details. The decals have been manufactured and are drying quietly to themselves.
Currently working on the shipping containers and their retention system.

Hi all
It is my great pleasure to inform you that this one is complete, it wasnt all plain sailing the decals fought me to the end. It was a different supplier to my usual and I think they were a bit thicker than what I am used to, things were probably exacerbated by me spraying too much vanish on them.
What resulted was decals that curled like a Christmas magic fish that you find in a Christmas cracker, it took me a few attempts before I realised it was having a bad reaction to the Microset and Microsol products. Once that was established things went a little easier.
Anyway considering that this was a sketchy half arsed idea of a build its come out pretty well.

And a couple of scale shots posed with an N scale Landrover and some figures, the space ship is meant to be around 1/144 scale so they are near enough........

This is another "GOB SMACKED" build!
Amazing that inside is an X-3 which found it's true calling.
-
The idea may have started out "sketchy" but the execution and end product are amazing.
-
Wow... just, wow. ;)
-
That's an amazing result! It could fit anywhere from 2001 through Star Wars or even Battlestar Galactica!

TTA Starlance . . .
Have to say, I wasn't sure where this was going when it was under construction, but now that it's finished, excellent . . .
cheers,
Robin.
-
Wow guys, you are really generous, thanks

Like the above said. Such vision for what X-3 can be and downright classy. 8)
-
That's a gorgeous and classy vessel, I could see it in several different SF settings. Heck, it would even fit into the future of Men Into Space for those of an age to remember that show.
-
Brilliant! .... Nope, that's all I got ... Brilliant! 8) :icon_alabanza: :icon_alabanza:

Fantabulous !!!!

Gob-smackingly good! Fantastic effect and all your epic battles with decals proved more than worth it. Brilliant build

Woo! That is stylin'! Really nice reshaping - it puts me in mind of a powerful speedboat.
-
Hmm.... didn't think of that one. Fit a proper keel, couple of outriggers, rocket engines out, propellers on. Luuuuvly fast boat.
Maybe on the next stiletto I get......... ;) :D
