Title: Dear Model Company, I would like you to release a kit of...
Post by: GTX_Admin on December 18, 2011, 04:41:38 AM
Hi folks,

What kits would you like companies to release?

To start with, I would like a 1/48 Ju288 + a 1/48 Tu-2.

What would you like to see?

Regards,

Greg

I would also like someone to release a 1/35 conversion for some of the 140mmm tank prototypes:

I would like then to be able to use this to upgun some tanks such as the M1 and Challenger.

Greg

Not sure if it is mentioned in any kit review but the HobbyBoss Leopard 2A6 includes two muzzle end pieces for the gun tube.  One of these parts is noticeably larger in diameter than the other but both are still intended to fit on the end of the gun tube.  No idea why it was included in the kit but it is there and not used.  I was under the impression the part might be for a yet to be released variant of the Leopard 2 sometime in the future armed with a 140mm gun.

Another to the list:  1/48 Mil Mi-8/17.

I can get one in 1/35 but prefer my aircraft in 1/48.

For me, it'd be more exotic 72nd aircraft weapon sets or 35th scale firearm sets in injection plastic.

There's a vast array of M16/M4 variants out there, for instance, but precious little difference in available weapons.  (Dragon are you listening? - their Quartermaster series are superb).

In a related vein, some modern troopies (also in 35th) other than US. (eg: ADF, Finnish, etc).

John

American tanks.
T28
T29
T30

British tanks
TOG 1- A 17lbr tank with a rhomboid suspension. It would be a great what if tank for the Blitzkrieg days.

T17 Autocar cargo halftrack.

How could I forget this one?

How long must we wait to get a 1/48 Su-32/Su-34?  Even a conversion kit would be welcomed!  At this rate I might end up making my own master /moulds...

Alvis 3.1

That'd rock. Ideally with decal options for TCAL, Northeast and/or TWA (whichever one Hughes owned at the time? I seem to recall reading he wanted the Jetliner...)

In 1/72: McDonnell Douglas YC-15, DHC-5D Buffalo, The 4 engine NASA-Boeing QSRA, DHC-7R Ranger, Turbo Beaver, a reboot of the Avro Arrow (and derivatives) and CF-100 by Trumpeter or Hobby Boss.

A nice selection of pylons and hard points for the things that go under the wings.

I want Revell to release a 1/144 F-16 with all the bells and whistles. After their 1/144 F-14A/B/D, F-15E, F/A-18C/D and F/A-18E (with F and G almost certainly in the making), an F-16 would round out the series rather nicely.  Just 10 days left until the news for 2012 are announced on modellversium.de but I'm not exactly holding my breath just yet.

And I want Revell to do a 1/72 F-15E. After Fujimi effed up their chance (is actually a 1/67 snap kit), Revell should give it a go.

And a proper 1/72 Su-25 and MiG-29 by Zvezda would also be very nice.  :D

An injection molded AMX in 1/72nd or 1/48th! :want:

Then tell them! HERE'S (http://www.italeri.com/news_scheda.asp?idNews=93) Italeri's survey for 2012! With any luck and if enough of us do it, they might just listen and get a kit out before the type's retired.

What's that in the upper left of the picture? Some M48/M60 upgrade? At first I though it's the Super M48 upgrade, but it's not.

Right - that is the B-15.
Modernize with at least B-29 or B-50 engines and gun turrets.
Maybe turn it into an ALCM launch platform.

In a town called Poulsbo which is located a few miles north of where I live is a tourist focused gift shop that has some interesting things.  One of which is a metal 1/48th scale model Boeing 314 with a huge price tag affixed to it.  While it would be tempting to acquire the model, I can not justify paying that much money for a model airplane.

Well Collect-Aire did have one out but those are rarer then Hen's teeth and you have to be willing to part with part of your anatomy to buy one when they do become available.  A new, injection moulded one would certainly be nice.

Another I would like in either kit or conversion form would be a 1/35 Air Defense Anti-Tank System (ADATS) system:

Given the option to acquire the Collectaire Savage or carve a model of the Savage from a piece of wood, I think the wood carving option would win.

ADATS would be nice, as would many ADV type vehicles.

For me, it remains decent, different 35th scale small arms or a wider variety of troopies in the same scale.

Boeing Model 314 Clipper (C-98) in 1/48th scale would be nice.

Do you want to model it or live in it?  ;)

1/72nd AMX

1/76th post war British AFV: FV432, Ferret, Fox, CVR(T) variants other than Scorpion and Scimitar, decent Centurion.

1/600th or 1/700th decent Leander class frigate.

Some more US and Brit paper-plane what-ifs: it seems like a German designer only had to scribble down the results of a bad night after too much beer and a dodgy bratwurst for it to be eagerly kitted, but you only get a smattering of the US and Brit ones that even flew, let alone the pure paper ones.

Even in 1/48th scale that Model 314 is still small enough in size to fit in the back of my F-150 :)

It would certainly look nice as a Navy Patrol Bomber with the P2B designation all tarted up in the three colour camouflage for the Pacific or maybe in the RAF Coastal Command scheme with markings for some obscure RCAF squadron in the Atlantic.

1/72nd AMX

Said it before: Tell Italeri! HERE'S (http://www.italeri.com/news_scheda.asp?idNews=95) their survey for 2012!
It seems as if the C-27J turned out to be their best-liked kit of the last year. At least to those who answered their survey (which may or may not be representative of their clients). Which could mean that people interested in modern planes of Italian origin do have some pull.

They even ask which kits they should re-issue. I think I said ESCI AV-8A Harrier, YF-23 and V-22 (all 1/72).

ohyeahand...

1/72nd or 1/76th M107 SPG, M110 SPG and M-578. For the puzzled, those are the "naked" predecessors to the M109, in 175mm, 203mm and recovery vehicle versions. I'd like them because they'd make great chassis for all sorts of whiffs, and I was most dischuffed to find they hadn't been kitted.

On the same principle:

1/72nd or 1/76th M18 Hellcat. Strange that this one's never been done in this scale, when Shermans and all the other US tank destroyers have been well covered.

In 1/35, a US T92 experimental tank (lost out to what became the M551 when amphibious flotation became a requirement as it was much more compact and "dense").

In 1/72, and possibly 1/48, a conversion kit to do an A3J-1 from an RA-5C.  I agree with the earlier poster who would love to see Italieri re-issue ESCI's 1/72 AV-8A (as well as the Harrier GR.1 and GR.3 variants) and 1/72 V-22.  Beyond that, I'd like to see some good kits of production F-35 variants (Fujimi's F-35B totally neglects the auxiliary inlet doors for v/stol operations).  I'd also love to see in both 1/72 and 1/48 some good weapons sets for European air-launched missiles and similar sets covering Israeli, South African, et al. missiles that just aren't normally covered.

plenty of 1/24 stuff id like to see......astons and jags, a decent mk1 or 2 escort rally car, some Rally Raid trucks (kamaz/tata/iveco etc)

tamiya need to do more 1/12 street bikes.....the cb750/katana/virago/etc have been in the range since Noah thought it looked like it was going to rain.....lots of more current bikes (and i dont mean sports bikes) make good candidates.......modern triumphs and beemers would be nice, harleys are out cos they want too much in royalties but i think revell had the right idea with their kustom choppers range but they could do with being more detailed methinks

airfix need to do the new 1/48 landies in 1/35

aircraft wise i cant think of any thing id really like to see  ;D

Regarding armour, I'd like to see some 35th injection SADF stuff (armour, weapons, troopies, wheeled vehicles, etc).

There are just too many types I wish the model companies would release... Now I would rephrase things in a somewhat different way, somehow:

« Dear Model Company, I would like you to stop releasing Spitfires, Mustangs, Hurricanes, B-17s, Me 109s, Fw 190s, Ju 88s, Zeros, and all those aircraft which already exist by the zillions in all their numerous variants. Please do us a favor: go for the unusual, take some risks, make us dream with aircraft that are more rarely seen. All prototypes aside, there have been production aircraft that were great but have too seldom been covered in plastic form. And also do more civilian types. Not every aviation enthusiast is a lover of military types and war... ».

And half the fun is turning them into gunships, AWACS and LRMPAs anyway..........  ;)

Seriously, I'd like to see more GA types in 1/72nd, particularly biz jets (surely if luxury cars are "sexy" enough to be modelled then private jets are?)

In terms of armour, I'd like to see someone do an injection-moulded M103 heavy tank. 1/35 and/or 1/72. Trumpeter?

Fair point, given the number of "paper panzers" they kit. How about a Conqueror while they're at it? come to think of it, an M103 and a Conqueror would go well in 1/76th alongside Airfix's JS-3...

As far as helicopters go, will anyone please do a decent 1/72 AH-1G Cobra? And would Revell please do a 1/72 Bo 105/PAH-1.

I'm surprised how thin on the ground AH-1G kits are.... As for the Bo-105, open goal: have you seen the scramble when an Airfix one comes up on ebay? :icon_surprised: ???

1) Which are the three most preferred Italeri kits (based on 2011 catalogue)
1. 1/72 XB-35
2. 1/35 SLC Maiale
3. 1/35 Biber Midget Sub

2) Which are the three model kits you would like to see in our line up in the incoming future.
1. 1/35 Troops in modern equipment of nations not represented by current manufacturers: eg: Italy / Australia / South Africa / Other European
2. 1/35 Weapon sets of nations not represented by current manufacturers: eg: Beretta / FN Herstal / Denel
3. 1/72 Fiat RS.14

3) Which are the Italeri model kits of the past, not more available for years, that you would like to see once again in the new catalogue.
1. 1/72 Gotha Go-242/244

Colle¢taire has a couple of very expen$ive re$in Ban$h¢¢ kit$.

Hawk Models produced a very basic F2H-2 Banshee in 1/48th scale back in the good old days.  This was released again under the Testor's brand name and has been out of production for a very long time.

Bristol Beaufighter in 1/72 SVP. The Hase`s are selling for crazy prices on Ebay.

Maybe during a long weekend just after closing,  Dragon, Fujimi or Trumpeter could send some Modeling savvy Ninja`s into the Hasegawa factory, drop in via the sky lights, break into the secret room which has non-prod molds, steal the molds, and escape leaving no sign of them ever being there.  Make it modular (noses, engines) and we can get a family portrait.

Also a reboot of the missing fighters: P-35, P-43, XP-50, XP-72.

Oh and anything with contra-props. I just love contra-props.  ;D

May not be enough buyers out in model land to justify it.  However there would be market for at least one kit --- me.

Ship-wise, I'd like to see a new 1/700 HMS Rodney and Nelson. Surely there must be a market for that!
And an angled-deck Essex for operations off the coast of Vietnam. Crusaders, Skyhawks, Skyraiders,....
And some more Cold War and contemporary Russian stuff in 1/700. Would be neat if Trumpeter scaled down some of their 1/350 Russian destroyers.

Looking in the PAK-20 book, it doesn't list a 1/48 kit of it Greg (two 1/72 kits though, Alliance and Warrior).  Of course that doesn't mean there wasn't one, just that the author never came across or heard of one.  Also as I don't have the Amendment Issues Books of this book I couldn't say if he ever did find one.

Why a single jet/turbofan on a cropduster? A turboprop might be more efficient at the low altitudes that this abomination (but in a good way!) flies.

I'm afraid you are sorely mistaken on this one. Only the Lala-1 demonstrator was a pure Polish product. Wikipedia says:

Quote
The Mielec M-15 was (...) manufactured by PZL Mielec in Poland for the USSR agricultural aviation.

That  says that PZL built it, NOT that they designed it! IT also says:

Quote
"The Soviet side insisted on using a jet engine in a new plane, and also participated in the design process."

Myasishchev was involved in the design process, hence the "M-15" designation.

Almost but not quite.  It is a conversion kit and not a complete kit in a box.  Oddly enough, I have a resin 1/32nd scale CAC CA-27 Sabre conversion that I found in the bargain box at Discount Models in Tacoma (University Place) several years ago.  It along with one of my Hasegawa 1/32nd scale F-86 kits will hopefully see it converted to the CA-27 unless someone offers a complete injection molded plastic kit as an alternative.  I would still prefer an actual kit of the CA-27 over a resin or vacuum formed conversion just for the sake of keeping my sanity.

In addition to the US heavy tanks previously mentioned, I would like to see the following, all in 1/35 scale and injection molded:

US T20 medium tank family, especially the T23 VVSS and T23E3(?) with torsion bar suspension. Similarly, the T25 with both HVSS and torsion bar suspension (T25E1?) would be nice.

US/UK T14 assault tank.

The one prototype/ "paper panzer" that seems to have been over-looked is the VK3002(DB), Daimler's very T34-ish Panther prototype.

I know there's a 1/35 scale resin version of the T23 VVSS on the way from Commander Models but I've never been a big fan of resin. The roughly $150 US price tag is also a bit more than I'd like to spend.

Dear Tamiya,
I would love to have a simple, yet reasonably detailed 1/35 1992 Range Rover LWB, a 2007 Range Rover, a 1994 Defender 110, and a Discovery 2.
Yep I would enjoy that.
That and a scaled down to 1/48 and 1/72 Spitfire Mk.IXc/e.
Kind regards,
A voice in the wilderness

I've just been surprised to find out that there seems to be no kit of the Fw-187 Falke in production at the moment: that definately needs fixing, I mean, it actually flew and entered a (sort of) service!

MPM/HML did one in 1/48 Resin which can still be found occasionally (I know since I have one):

I also understand that there are a couple of 1/72 ones produced by various companies.  Although maybe not in production right now, they are still available.

Hopefully Tasca will make a large hatch M4A1 soon enough, as they have announced a Hybrid-hull Sherman Firefly a month ago.  Anyways Tamiya has all the parts to make a M4A1E8 in their M1 and M51 kits that came out last year.

i would like a revell 1/144 A400M (and dont point me to the resin ones that cost an arm and a leg)
furthermore, i would like a rerelease of the 1/72 Percival Pembroke (injection kit),
under the re-releases i would like:

Revell:
1/144 NH90
1/144 Hawker Hunter FGA.9
1/72 Agusta A-109
1/72 Sikorsky H-34 (better then the hobbyboss mould)
1/72 Piasecki H-21
1/144 KC-10 Extender
1/72 F-84F Thunderstreak
1/72 Heinkel He162 Volksjager

Airfix:
1/72 S.A.Bulldog
1/144 Nimrod MR.2
1/72 C-130H Hercules

on the new releases (injection molds) i would like:
-F-35A/B/C in all scales
-1/144 Harrier GR1/3
-1/144 C-160 Transall (revell, stop fooling us with the odd scaled ones)
-decent YF-23
-decent MIG-29 and SU-27
-1/144 T50 PAK-FA
-1/72 aermacchi M346
-decent and new 1/72 Alpha Jet and Fouga CM170 Magister
-more 1/72 Luft'46 models (either new molds or re-releases of old revell/dragon boxings)
-new 1/72 scale CF100 Mk.5 (and no hobbycrap, please FTLOG)

list still needs to be filled up.

Yeah, it was a nice and attractive concept but ruined in the execution.  When I was at Northrop, we had some folk who'd worked on the T-46 and there were some real problems that Fairchild's management had ignored or tired to "paper over".  It didn't work.

While not quite 1/35th scale you should be aware that Revell just released their old snap-tite 1/32nd scale cars again.  Camaro, Mustang, and a couple of others.  MSRP was around $9.00 here in the states.  These may have been released originally under the Monogram brand name before Revell bought them out.

But, of course, the kit with Norwegian decals would be running 6-7 years late  ;D

Does make me wonder though, why aren't airframe makers begging (bribing?) model producers to kit their products? To me, it'd seem like great publicity amongst the taxpayers of potential purchasing nations.

To a degree their needs are covered by the display model industry often using wood.  For instance, here's a 1/40 scale display model of the NH90 available for purchase.

I've got a couple of 1:32 cars (Airfix Jag & Aston Martin racing double set) for a post-apocalypse diorama with 1:35 figures but there the scale difference becomes a Whif element in its own right. What I mostly want vehicles for, though, is to put in dio's with my armour & there 1:32 just doesn't cut it, it has to be 1:35 (even if they are Whif scenarios)!  :icon_swat:

What's that in the upper left of the picture? Some M48/M60 upgrade? At first I though it's the Super M48 upgrade, but it's not.

Thanks to the mighty Google, I've found out what it is. It's a Swiss upgrade for their indigenous Pz68 tank, equipping it with a 120mm L/49 gun. I've found only two further pics of this.

It sounds rather simple but a 1:48 Sea Fury should have happened a long time ago.   Now a Scimitar and Meteor F.8 to match would be gravy.

The Sea Fury is already produced in 1/48 by a couple of companies.

There are also 1/48 Meteor F.8s available.

The only 1/48 Scimitar available is the Dynavector/Sanger/Nimbus Vacuform one though, so I agree with you there.  I nice injection moulded one would go down a treat.

Regarding the Sea Fury, I was meaning good ones. ;D

Dear Airfix:   I would like a proper DH-112 Venom  :-* and a Javelin FAW.9 as well, both tooled to the level of the Sea Vixen.     And if Alley Cat Resins wouldn't be quashed, a decent Vampire would be great as well.   There must be a dozen What-if's I'd like to do of the Vampire  :-* :-* and it looks as though Trumpeter stuffed their soon to be released kit.   :-\

Edit:  When the above was written I had *no* idea about the Airfix Javelin and now that the Trumpott Vampire has been released, the kit reminds me of a couple of lines from ''The Life of Brian'':  ''Crucifixion?'' ''Crucifixion.''    :icon_crap:

GBU-28 was available in 1:48th scale from HighFlight (Mike Bishop/MB Models)in resin with metal control surfaces.  I have one of these sets in protective custody that was purchased from the American Eagles shop when it was located in Ballard.
GBU-28 was included in one of the 1/72nd scale AMT-Ertl/ESCI F-111 kits.  Have seen this kit at Emil's off and on over the years.
AGM-114 Hellfire was available from Verlinden in the resin and metal AH-64 upgrade kit for the Monogram Apache.  No quad launchers as they were in the Monogram kit but it did have some shiny bits for these same launchers.  The resin Hellfire missiles had photo-etched metal fins.

Well there is a Collect-Aire Resin A-12 in 1/48.  You can still find them from time to time (I have 2)

I seem to recall reading that Airfix are going to release a 1/48 Merlin.

Definitely agree with you re NH90

Italeri have released a 1/48 AH-1Z

I am pretty sure that Attic Aircraft released a 1:48 resin conversion For the HH-3 - you may still find one somewhere.

Agree with you re 1/35 M777

I'm eventually going to try and scratch an A-12, which will ensure its release in plastic just as I'm about done...

I'll have to check out Airfix for the Merlin, I've seen the Lynx kits and they look pretty sharp.

Is Italeri's Zulu Cobra really a Z, or is it a W with some obvious changes (4 bladed rotor)?

The M198 kit came out just as the triple 7 replaced it with the Corps, so I suppose we'll get a kit of the M777 when its replaced/retired.

Did I mention a new-tool F-106 done to modern standards? One that ISN'T the stuff of a psychotic episode trying to make it fit together? Seriously, the Revell kit makes Eastern Car Works passenger railcars look like 'Shake The Box', and their warping problems are the stuff of industry legends...

<...> Is Italeri's Zulu Cobra really a Z, or is it a W with some obvious changes (4 bladed rotor)? <...>

AFAIK, they changed more than just the rotors, but it's still miles away from an actual Zulu.

It would be nice to have all the remaining old-tool century fighters updated along with the unbuilts. IE (R)F-101 (A to H), F-106 (A, B, C, D and E), F-108 (styrene, not resin) and F-109 (styrene, not resin).

I think Hobby Boss did announce such a vehicle in their 2012-2013 catalogue. They released some stuff that wasn't announced in their catalogue in 2012, so I guess the buggy will come sooner or later.

i wish Revell would stop re-releasing the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 over and over again every year.

when are they going to re-release other types like the Boeing 767 or A330, so i can finally make a decent tanker conversion that doenst cost an arm and a leg?

a decent 1/144 F-4E/F would be welcome, and as for airfix or revell, please re-release the 1/72 F-84F Thunderstreak and/or RF-84F Thunderflash.

Heck, I wish Revell would just clean up and rework the badly-overaged tooling they use on their catalog-staple products... the Apache (I'm sorry, it's otherwise got the makings of a good kit but a decent AH-64 should NOT require surgery to get the side bulges to fit right!), the various Tomcat variants and the WWII and Century Series kits. About the only "add glue, drop together and paint" (which IMO is how a kit worth its production cost should be) release from them I've seen recently, at least Revell USA, is their Strike Eagle. Their Prowler dropped together mostly OK, but it still has a lot of the bugs of the Intruder its tool was modified from.

Their F-106... well, I'm only tackling the little nightmare for a prof, and even if a better kit cost $50-75 if one came out I would Sale/Trade List the bloody PITA in a heartbeat.

Be careful what you wish for :)

There was a 1:48th scale "conversion" for the F-16XL available from someone doing business as Attic Models.  There were some "issues" with this model and it was apparently severe enough that this company is no longer in business.  No link provided as it would be like beating a dead horse at this point.  ;)

Well, the Monogram XL had some issues... with a correction, I'd like to see it reissued in both 1/72 and new 1/48 single- and -two-seater versions.

Ditto the 1/48 "F-19", preferably with a mechanism added so you can have both wingtips synchronized in motion and stay in whatever position you put them in. (I know, it was never built, but it's such a cool-looking bird it shoulda been at least given serious study to.)

To be fair, some of that kit is injection, most of it is fiberglass/resin (fuselage).  I've got the An-22 kit which is in this style and the high cost is associated with how it's made, laid in by hand ---

Replacement tool for the Otaki 1/144 C-5, preferably this time with working nose/tail hatches or at least capability to interchange "open" and "closed" components once built. (Maybe something's wrong with me, but $60US for the Revell C-17 is a tough sell, never mind the $100 for the Anigrand Galaxy--which uses PITA resin to build, and thus I have to factor in hours of psychiatrist time into the build cost.)

Dear Revell of Germany:
Dust off the molds for Matchbox's 1/72 Provost trainer. I could use one for my alternate Austria storyline.

Dear Italeri:
A 1/72 SIAI SF-260 would go down a treat.

A Piaggio P.180 Avanti in 1/72 would also be appreciated

A 1/72 AMX in injection form is WAAAY overdue. Seriously, how many people have to tell you that?

Dear Meng:
Your 1/72 Fiat G.91 was well received. Don't stop now, follow it up with a G.91Y!

A 1/72 AMX seeing as how Italeri seems in no hurry to do one.

Actually, I didn't hear much about that kit at all one way or the other. It entered the market rather quietly and with little fanfare.

I wonder if having someone other than MPM do the tooling and molding had something to do with the quiet reception. As I recall, the Xtrakit Swift, Scimitar and Canberra were all done by Sword.

Sword did not pursue issues of any of those kits in their own boxing whereas MPM reissued several of the kits they did for the Xtrakit line under their Special Hobby banner.

Without Sword making their own editions of the kits and marketing them in the fashion that MPM would, perhaps the lack of market exposure undermined the kit.

a reasonably priced 1/350 or 1/700 or something i can afford. i know of the 1/350 Iron Shipwright model but at 325 that is a bit too steep. i also know of the little 1/2500 scale or so ships for war gaming but that is just to small and thestill want almost 30 bucks for those, just way to much to justify for me. as one of the most requested ship models in the fine scale modeler survey for the last ten years you would think some plastic companys would listen.

We're getting at least twenty 1:1 scale Super Tucanos at my local "hobby shop" in the next few years.

Cheers,

Both Italeri and Academy are working hard to fulfil that wish this year with models of their own.  :)

If you are referring to the M730 Chaparral then, yes, there is a kit or was a kit available from AFV Club listed as the M730A1 Chaparral Air Defense Missile System (kit number AF3502)

This kit has been out of production for a while but it can still be found on the shelf in some hobby shops and I have seen it here at Skyway Modelshop or Discount Models if you are serious about obtaining one I will provide you with their contact information.

Here, here on the P.1216 front.  A 1/48 injection moulded (or resin) Hawker P.1121 would go down just perfectly as well.

In fact, a whole line dedicated to post war prototypes etc would be much appreciated.

Here, here!  I'll second this!

It's the wrong scale for our esteemed Administrator, but I'd love to see Anigrand collect some of their 1/144 extra kits to do a set of Hawker Prototypes:
P.1121, P.1127, P.1184, and P.1214-3

Evan, P.1121 is done by Whirlykits in resin now, mine is a vacuform though. Fantastic Plastic do a P.1214 in resin and I have a P.1216 which was mastered by Martin Higgs (over on the What-If forum).  I think I've read somewhere that there's a new tool P.1127 kit coming out

I was just looking at what Anigrand could do now with their existing molds.

I'm familiar with Martin's P.1216 (got one myself) and I intend to get the Fantastic Plastic kit come next overtime.  I've got at least one of the old Maintrack vac-form P.1121 kits in the remote southern stash (Whirlykits bought their molds). And I've got one of the Heritage pre-Kestrel P.1127's (not the first two prototypes that Airfix molded but not a full Kestrel, either) and I so want to get a Heritage trainer P.1127, or two, to do a TV-6B Kestrel trainer.  *chuckle* That pre-Kestrel P.1127 would look good done up as a VZ-12 in US Army testbed markings.

I'm fairly sure there was a 1/35th Saladin, by Tamiya or Fujimi, but it hasn't been re-popped for ages so it's pretty rare now.

How about some more obscure armour in whatever scale (but I'd like 1/72nd or 1/76th)?

Brazilian Engasa EE-11 Urutu 6x6 APC (used by Iraq in 1991)
Brazilian Engasa EE-9 Cascaval 6x6 Armoured Car
Austrian Steyr 4K7FA tracked APC (also built in Greece as the Leonides)
Austrian Steyr SK105 tank destroyer (Heller could do this since it uses an AMX-13 turret)
Swedish Pbv-302 APC (natural partner for all those S-tank kits)
South African Ratel 6x6 APC (now used in peace-keeping all over the world)

What we REALLY need is a 1/35 scale injection molded Object 279 Soviet tank, preferably announced by three different companies simultaneously! ;D

But seriously though, I note that since my last post in this thread way back in April 1012, the VK 30.02(DB) Panther prototype is now available as a 1/35 scale injection kit from Amusing Hobby. I also note that none of the US armor I mentioned (various members of the T20 prototype medium tank family) are available in 1/35 scale, save for the Commander Models resin T23 with VVSS. So, at the very least, I would still like to see 1/35 injection molded kits of the T23E3 (version with torsion bar suspension) and the T14 assault tank.

I'd like to see many more of the tactical SAMs done in 1/72nd and 1/35th. It's not like they arn't aggressive-looking things with plenty of super-detailing opportunities, is it?

Original towed Rapier
Rapier Field standard C/Jernas
Tracked Rapier
Stormer/Starstreak vehicle
Original Crotale
Crotale/AMX-30
(AMX-30 DCA to with the above)
Chapparal
Hawk

Dear Freedom Model Kits, now that you have produced a proper F-20A and F-20N, could we have a flat canopy, no radar, original intake F-4A prototype Phantom?  From that I'd take it to a single seater attack aircraft.

Falcon does a nice conversion for this one in 1/48 and ISTR that DB (DB Models?) did a resin conversion in both 1/72 and 1/48.  Search for pictures of the YF4H-1 and F-4A and you should find plenty of info.  If memory serves me correctly, one of these aircraft was part of the Sageburner low-altitude speed record effort.

Cutting Edge has done 1/48 and 1/32 conversions I believe - you can see a write up on the 1/48 one here (http://abqscalemodelers.com/ASM_Jun09_Newsletter_0906.pdf) and one on the 1/32 and 1/48 ones here (http://www.hyperscale.com/2007/reviews/accessories/cec32189previewbg_1.htm).  That said, the Cutting Edge ones are well out of production and increasingly rare.

Dear Airfix:  Please enlarge 1/144 Heracles to 1/72.
Used 1/144 as core kit for Slowly Jet.
1/72 kit has super kitbashing potential.  Mild to major changes can yield interesting results.

Knowing Hobbyboss, the SEAL DPV will have delicate, weight carrying parts with tinny connecting pins, vague instructions and a sheet of PE full of microscopic parts that will be invisible after construction. One tiny PE part will be critical to the stability of the model, too.

How about an up-to-date F-16E/F/I variant in 1/72?
We've got the Hasegawa and Kinetic F-16I, but the E/F variants have been forgotten in this scale... >:(
And how about an accurate YF-23? The F-23A would be even better but i'd be happy with a good 1/72 YF...

I know that I would buy the following in 1/35 plastic if they were produced.

WWII era:
All of the American ones mentioned: T29, T30, T32, T34, etc.
T26E5 "Jumbo" Pershing that was going to be used for the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands.
M38 Wolfhound Armored Car.
A30 Challenger tank.
A43 Black Prince tank
A33 Excelsior tank.

Cold War era:
T92 light tank
Caernarvon tank
Conway tank destroyer
Saracen

Modern era:
Israeli Namer with Samson 30 mm RCWS option
Turkish Tulpar IFV
Turkish Altay MBT
ASCOD Pizarro/Uhlan IFV (I know Nimix out of Spain has a resin version)
Italian Dardo IFV
ROK K21 IFV
ROK K2 Panther MBT
Indian Arjun and Arjun MKII MBT
Jordanian Falcon Turret conversion or better yet complete plastic kit based on the demonstrator

Given Amodels' current leaning for commuter and corporate types in 1/72, I'd like to see the following from them in 1/72:

Dornier 228 (The Revell one is buildable but toylike in many ways)

Dornier 328

Saab 340

HFB-320 Hansa Jet

HS-125 family

Honda HA-420 HondaJet

How about a 1/72 and 1/48 Learjet 25?  in 1/48, either as a stand-alone kit or as a conversion kit for either the Testors/IMC/et al. Learjet 24 or the Hasegawa Learjet 35/36.  If you really wanted to do a full range, have both the early version with the oval windows and the later version with the rectangular windows.

There was an attempt made to produce a resin 1:35th scale CH-53/MH-53 kit many years ago.  Mostly hype but a lot of people were dropping money on pre-ordering the kit in hopes of getting in before the price and demand jumped.  Then it all folded up and disappeared like vapor ware and politician's promises.  A shame too as they were offering the Pave Low version as the first kit in the product line.

That was NightFlight Models wasn't it?  I'm kind of surprised Trumpeter haven't released one given they have done a bunch of other helicopters in 1/35.

@Greg - yeah, probably was NightFlight Models, the name alone should have been a tell as to the whole thing being a bit dodgy from the start.  A real 'fly by night' operation.

Same here, especially as they've done little ones like Chinooks 'n' all. ::)

Might cost an arm & a leg but it'd be cheaper than both arms, both legs, kidneys, liver, spleen & corneas required to afford a resin version in 1/35. :icon_crap:

I wouldn't have classed a CH-47 as smaller than a CH-53.

Strangely, I have a 1/35 CH-47 in my stash --- and parts for a 1/32 one too. Plus a 1/48 CH-53

There is a 1/72 Boeing Model 314/C-98 available.  Technically that uses the same wing as the XB-15 which could provide the starting point for a 1/72 XB-15.  Maybe try contacting Anigrand directly regarding it.

Title: The February-March 1967 Scale Modeler Magazine Reader Survey
Post by: Inactive on July 22, 2019, 11:16:59 AM
Held over 52 years ago it was the largest specifically for non-flying scale modelers by any hobby news publication of the day, one I'd participated in as well. My ed. notes highlight several of the requested modeling subjects released since the survey including one the article author assuredly proclaimed: "...will probably never appear except as scratch built projects..." the Nakajima G8M Renzen "Rita", Hasagawa dutifully marketing it in 1/72 less than a decade later!

The Readers Speak Results Of Our Modeler’s Survey

The letters continue to pour in but out of the chaos that five thousand plus survey returns can produce, Scale Modeler has been able to draw several significant and far reaching conclusions.

First and foremost, is the informed caliber of today’s modeler [sic, ed.]  As we have pointed out before, he is neither twelve years old nor is he gullible. On the contrary, his knowledge of what he is modeling is usually extensive.

He is discriminating in his purchases and, if the kit warrants it, he is willing to spend quite a bit more to get something extra. Quality impresses him and he is quick to spot the hackneyed and the inferior. For this reason, the manufacturing of scale model kits has become a very competitive as well as hazardous business. Guess wrong or underestimate the modeler’s selectivity and a firm, even a big one, can go out of business fast.

Although our survey is only some six weeks along as this is written and we still are receiving letters at the rate of five hundred per week, a consensus has been building and it has taken the following form.

Fully half of those who replied to our questionnaire opted to write letters, going far beyond our brief listing. We appreciated this and we read them all. Preliminary among the comments after the perennial one that the survey was a good idea, was the thought expressed in many ways, that his was the first time the modeler had been asked about what he though and wanted and that it was hoped the manufactures would take heed.

We would like to reassure our readers that several companies, all of which well known, have already expressed interest in what they though and want to see the results of our survey as soon as it is completed. Two have already begun tooling up their plants for the production of models which, heretofore, they never realized were so wanted by the modeling public.

In addition to getting their thoughts of their chests, many readers also took the time to both praise and criticize some of the features in Scale Modeler [S/M, ed.]. A few issues back, we told you that S/M was to be your magazine, and you lost no time making your opinions known. We must add however, that the majority of your points were well taken and although you got us right in the ego, we will try to adopt as many of your ideas as possible.

Getting back to your kit selections . . . we found the following comments particularly noteworthy. In fact they were voiced so often that we feel there is a definite trend to the thing of our readers.

1.   Most modelers are tired of the same old standbys. Unless the kits are superdetailed [sic, ed.], much larger, or depict a different model previously unavailable, they would rather say bye bye to Mustangs and Zeros et. al.

2.   Every modeler who wrote to us generally admitted that he [single gender OK for the day here] would be willing to pay a little more to get a little more. All would rather have one or two well done plane, car, ship or armor kits than a hose of inaccurate, poorly researched models.

3.   Almost everyone evinced a keen interest in the neglected between-the-wars plastics which encompass the period 1920 to 1940 [arguably from 1919 as seen from today IMHO not counting the Spanish Civil War], and include military, civilian and racing planes.

4.   Our readers also wanted to see a section devoted to readers’ submissions, a feature we begun with our sixth issue [September 1966] and intend to sustain.

Before going into the selections chosen by you, one more market reaction was noted, possibly the most important one.

Every reader took the survey seriously. Many wrote us that they had tried repeatedly in the past to promote several kits that they wanted especially to see. Some have even gone so far as organize clubs [ed. emphasis] for the purpose. Unfortunately, their requests have been ignored or turned down with a polite reply. That is until now.

We at Scale Modeler take great pleasure in announcing that many of your requests will soon be in the works. The model industry is waking up. Competition from overseas has been a major spur [emphasis added; incredibly true after the Cold War ended in 1992 with the dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 26, 1991. ed.], but the resounding response from readers like yourselves has made the big difference.

For too many years scale modeling was thought to be in the same category with “hobby toys”, particularly by the manufacturers themselves. It is only now that many manufacturers have learned that scale modelers are serious people. With the emphasis away from pleasing the kids and focused instead on building an authentic replica, we can expect to see great strides made in accuracy, quality and the range of models available. If Scale Modeler has done anything to further this trend, it would be gratifying indeed.

And now the results of the survey in order of preference [emphasis, ed.]:

AIRCRAFT

Kingfisher by Monogram in ¼ inch will be reviewed in next issue of S/M [June 1967 ed.]

First Place . . . tie between Vought Sikorsky Kingfisher and Douglas TBD Devestator.

The former will be out within a few months in 1/32 scale, the model, an OS2U-3 type was made from a three-view drawing appearing in our sister publication Air Classics. Meanwhile, preliminary work is underway on a model of the later.

Second Place . . . Martin B-10.

A fine aircraft ignored by manufacturers, no plans are in the works for its production, bet we have made contact with a forward looking firm which is giving the matter strong consideration. [i.e. Williams Brothers injected kit in 1/72 scale]

Third Place . . . Savoia Marchetti 79.

We knew this one was in production [i.e. Airfix 1/72 & Artiplast 1/50 injected kits] when we ran our survey and therefore omitted it. However, we got so many requests for it, we thought we would include it to prove that not all manufacturers are stuck on the same kits.

Fourth Place . . . Seversky P-35, another of the forgotten classics of the thirties, which many wanted super-detailed in 1/4” scale. [Williams Brothers 1/32 injected kit out first, wouldn’t be super-detailed but read on the Internet number of modelers have “improved” upon it over the decades, ed.]

Fifth Place . . . Curtis C-46 Commando, virtually submerged by the Goony bird’s publicity, this World War II workhorse was the biggest non-combat vote getter. [Williams Brothers again would be first getting their 1/72 injected kit out, ed.]

Sixth Place . . . Waco 10 . . . all respondents wanted a big, super-detailed model of this bird with moveable controls ala Monograms F3F and Gulfhawk. [Am assuming that’s been done over the ensuing 50 years, no? ed.]

Seventh Place . . . Bell Airacuda, also in quarter inch scale, although collectors of many models complained that 1/72 was the only to keep models from taking over the entire house. [Williams Brothers yet again got their 1/72 injected kit out first. So very little did the article author appreciate much less know that even as ink was drying monster-sized 1/72 kits never mind larger scale kits would soon be on the market ala the Monogram B-52D, development work for which was well advanced then. ed.]

Eight Place . . . Tie among Mitsubishi Ki 21 Type 97 “Sally,” Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” and Kawanishi H3K1 flying boat “Emily.”

The first two will eventually be brought out by L/S, the Japanese firm which did the Peggy that appeared in the issue Number 6 [i.e. the L/S 1/75 scale classic, ed.]. Since L/S and Nichimo are perhaps the two finest companies in Japan, these should be winners. [All were on the market before 1970 in 1/72 scale if memory serves right, ed.]

Ninth Place . . . Heinkel He 177 Grief . . . aircraft will be out next year by Faller, a German Maker, but may be hard to come by. [Beyond criminal Scale Modeler Magazine editors didn’t profess knowledge about Airfix coming out with their kit that very year – 1967. Did Airfix choose to keep this release Maximum Top Secret? Did the editors not want to act on rumors that it was about to be released, something else maybe? Primal screams of anger from this modeler still reverberating 52 years later! ed.]

Tenth Place. . . Curtis Shrike . . . again the call was for a super detailed model and readers called for extra parts to make model variations with, thus giving them a wider range of types, and were willing to pay more for same. [Have seen models of this bird over the years; super detailed ones with variations can’t say, those who know chime in. ed.]

Eleventh Place . . . Tie among Boeing F4B, P-12, P-26 all in quarter inch scale. It was felt the models now on the market of these ships were just too inadequate. Again super-detailing and size was the big feature, with lots of accessory parts for variation and prime attention paid to exacting detail. It was also found that in conjunction with these inter-war ship types Monogram’s treatment of the Grumman F3F should be extended to these classics also. [Was all this done over the ensuing 52 years, would love to know. ed.]

Twelfth Place . . . Lavochkin LA-5, included with these votes was the comment that most Russian WWII aircraft have been ignored by the manufacturers. [Airfix had the Yak 9D in 1963,  Ilyushin Il-2 in 1964, Petlyakov Pe-2 in 1968, FROG the Tupolev SB-2 in 1969, Lavoshkin La-7 planned in 1971 but not released till 1975 which I think was around when Italeri came out with their La-5FN kit. I just don’t remember seeing any La-5 kits other than Italeri’s during the 1970s. ed.]

ARMOR

[Professing blind ignorance for fear of being bashed to pulp won’t comment on this genera. ed.]

First Place . . . General Stuart M3A1 light tank used by British in western desert and christened “Honey”.

Second Place . . . General Grant with 75 mm gun also mainstay in western desert, early phase.

Third Place . . . German half track armored personnel carrier . . . sd.Kfz 250/1.

Fourth Place . . . American M-10 Tank destroyer with 76 mm gun.

Fifth Place . . . British Mk.I “Mother,” variation which first appeared on the Somme in 1916.[/i]

Sixth Place . . . Renault FT tank WW I. [This one I’ll comment on; why pray tell wasn’t there an injected kit on the market of this famous armor subject back then? ed.]

Seventh Place . . . Christie T3 Tank, pioneer of the early thirties and forerunner of Russian designs.

Eight Place . . . Russian T/34 76 [sic. ed.]. Only model of this type tank is T/34 [sic. ed.] 85 mm gun model by Revell which is no longer in production.

Many requests for Japanese tanks were received but these are now available from Japan in any store that stocks Japanese kits [Highlands Hobbies in North Highlands, California next to McClellan A.F.B. where I’d frequented in the late 1960s did stock them for sure. ed.]

SHIPS

First Place . . . RMS Titanic . . . the famous liner won by ratio of nearly three to one over its nearest competitor. Rumor has it that the Cunard White Star Liner would take dim view of a model being produced, as it would revive unpleasant memories. This seems a bit much when you consider the movies and best selling books written about this historic steamship. At any rate, two firms are definitely interested in this project, as a group of modelers who form the Titanic Enthusiasts of America (that’s the name) have collected all the photos etc. needed to do a comprehensive job. Model would be made in the three ft. overall class. [indeed they'd come out not long afterwards! ed.]

Second Place . . . German WW I sub (U-9) Kapitainleutnant Otto Weddigen commanding. Early sub sank three British battlecruisers in first weeks of WWI. Readers asked for clear plastic hull-half to reveal detailed interior. One firm has already undertaken the project. [Will have to do Internet research meantime y’all welcome to enlighten me. ed.]

Third Place . . . Carrier Enterprise Big “E” a scratch built model of which appeared in previous issue of [Scale] Modeler [November 1966 ed.]. Kit will appear early next year. [Who’s I ask? ed.]

AUTOMOBILES

Of the thousands of questionnaires received all but a handful checked Hitler’s Mercedes Touring Car [ed. emphasis], which was the biggest single vote getter in any category. Of all the models available the car manufacturers offer the widest range. Therefore, many classics ignored in other fields are already available in the car category. However, in addition to the Mercedes, numerous requests were made for Craig Breedlove’s “Spirit of America”. [ed. emphasis]

In closing, we wish to tank all those who took the time to write to us. Time and space do not allow us to reduce all your requests and it must be noted that particular aircraft such as the McDonnell Moonbat [ed. emphasis] and Japan’s Rita [ed. emphasis; i.e. Nakajima G8N], a four engine bomber will probably never appear except as scratch built projects [How disgustingly presumptuous, wanna hear cat calls from our forum modelers right now! ed.]. However, many fine models which are out were requested by readers who in all probably, did not know that they were available. We are speaking of the Douglas A-20 Havoc, the Me. 410 [ed. emphasis] (reviewed in last issue) [November 1966 ed.] and now the Arado 196. [ed. emphasis. How so very true then in 1967. Decades before the Public Internet y’all only had print publications & word of mouth to go by. ed.] Others will be coming out shortly and if your local hobby store does not carry them, write to any of the specialist outfits which advertise in S/M; chances are they’ll have what you want.

A simple request to aftermarket suppliers, can we have a 1/48 Learjet Model 25 fuselage to use with either the IMC/Testors Model 23/24 or, with suitable engine nacelles and a wing trim, with the Hasegawa/Revell Learjet 35/36?  For that matter, could we have the winglets to model any of the "Longhorn" Learjets - you'd need the Model 25 fuselage plus the winglets to do the Model 28/29 and the winglets by themselves to do a Model 31.

That same vehicle was also used by a contractor at Fort Bragg, NC for an electronics shelter containing equipment for imagery exploitation.  Two of my soldiers were involved with testing it for a short period of time.  Nothing much ever came of it, unlike the Digital Single Lens Reflex Camera with 3.5" floppy diskettes as the media storage that was "evaluated" by my unit.

Can you share more about this Jeff?   That must have been one big body.

It was a standard size Canon SLR that had been modified to DSLR camera by incorporating a new back on the camera frame.  Nothing special about it as far as size and it took decent [for that time] images.  The modified back allowed you to insert a 3.5" floppy diskette instead of a film roll.  All quite straight forward from there and not much different from the DSLR cameras currently available save for the size of the media storage.

The Sony Mavica digital camera of the mid-late 90's used 3.5" floppies to store potato quality images (actually, at highest quality, they were OK. You just couldn't store many on the camera).

Same problems we encountered during evaluation of that prototype Canon DSLR was quantity of images that could be stored on the 3.5' diskette.  Image quality was acceptable for most applications that the camera was being tested.  Things like target surveillance of installations etc. but the SF guys were not pleased with the thing as it suggested to them that they would become "expendable assets" once the images were transmitted back to higher echelons.  Can not blame them for that point of view.  Also, this was back in 1988-1989 when we evaluated the camera.

1/48 is my preferred scale, so I won't bother writing in which scale I want things, haha. Also, all injection plastic.

As I am putting a package together for Rickshaw (Brian) it dawned upon me that what we don't have is the UK equivalent of a 1/72 Hasegawa Weapons Set where we have an all-in-one box of 1950s, '60s and '70s air-to-air weapons at less than $1/missile.

Examples are the Fireflash, Firestreak, Meteor, Red Dean, Red Top, SRAAM/Taildog etc.

You can buy most the air-to-air missiles from various vendors such as Freightdog, Barracuda, Alleycat,  Odds And Ordnance Range etc but it gets expensive.  IE the Barracuda Firestreak or Red Top is $7 CDN per missile.

Further to my earlier post, a few more that have come to mind - and again, all in 1/48 and all injection plastic, regardless of whether there's resin available or not... I don't have enough spare organs to afford resin, and it's a horrible medium to work with.

  • NH-90
  • C-27J Spartan
  • Canadair CL-214/15 - you could have the parts for both in one kit
  • I would LOVE a kit of the F-15 ACTIVE/MTD. Hell, I'd even settle for a resin conversion in 1/48, just for the squared off engine nacelles and exhausts
  • A BAE SABA would be awesome too. The canard rear low-wing one with the prop at the rear is my favourite design

Agree - especially with those listed above

I know that I would buy the following in 1/35 plastic if they were produced.

WWII era:
All of the American ones mentioned: T29, T30, T32, T34, etc. (T29, T30 and T34, check)
T26E5 "Jumbo" Pershing that was going to be used for the invasion of the Japanese Home Islands.
M38 Wolfhound Armored Car.
A30 Challenger tank.
A43 Black Prince tank
A33 Excelsior tank.

Cold War era:
T92 light tank
Caernarvon tank
Conway tank destroyer
Saracen

Modern era:
Israeli Namer with Samson 30 mm RCWS option
Turkish Tulpar IFV
Turkish Altay MBT
ASCOD Pizarro/Uhlan IFV (I know Nimix out of Spain has a resin version)
Italian Dardo IFV
ROK K21 IFV
ROK K2 Panther MBT (Check)
Indian Arjun and Arjun MKII MBT
Jordanian Falcon Turret conversion or better yet complete plastic kit based on the demonstrator

To the modern era I would like to add:
Israeli Namer IFV with unmanned turret
South African RG-35/35 RPU MRAP
British Ocelot MRAP
British Ares APC
British Ajax Scout Vehicle
Canadian TAPV
Singaporean Bionix 25
Russian BPM-97/KamAZ-43269 Vystrel

1/35 styrene CH-46 Sea Knight
1/35 styrene CH-53E Super Stallion, although I'd settle for a CH-53D Sea Stallion

There is/was a Lincoln resin conversion kit from Blackbird Models. Unsure if it still available.

Can't comment on the Sud Sahara through it would be a cool kit.

1/48 HAL HF-24 Marut...even a Vacuform would be acceptable!

Blast from the past! YES!!! I have been screaming from the rooftops about this for about 20 years. Gorgeous aircraft, and terribly overlooked. The whiffing possibilities are enormous, and being a Kurt Tank design it would even appeal to the Luft '46 crowd. There are probably enough modelers in India alone to make it profitable. At my request, Fantasy Kit World on facebook did one up for me a few years ago.

I unfortunately spent way too much time (and money) at Hannants (https://www.hannants.co.uk).

Their Future Releases page (https://www.hannants.co.uk/futurereleases/) has over 2,600 items listed in all scales.

I am seeing a trend (at least in 1/72 aircraft) of many re-releases. So this is a good place to check first before you go to your resale vendor(s). And they do offer 10% off on some backorders.

Is there any chance to re-release Heller 1/400 brise-glace 'LENINE' ?

Can any of you transmit this petition/desire to Heller ?

Welch Models has three boxings. But it is GBP 121-123. So it's a pass for me.

There is also one done by a German outfit, can't recall the name right now though.

...No longer building scale models but years ago e-mailed Airfix to "cut steel" for 1/72 scale AVRO Manchester, unkindly told me never shocking given they'd released their excellent Lancaster B.II kit in 2013 me in 1990 building a vacuform & resin parts conversion of the ancient Matchbox B.I kit. Excellent build photos of Planet Model's half-decent resin Manchester kits up on the Internet, now impossible to find at one time had them all now wished I'd built them!

Since A&A has done the first two prototype HA-300s (3rd prototype had variable inlets and an afterburning engine), perhaps they can do a HAl HF-24 since that was definitely operational.

I'm a bit surprised that none of the resin folks have done an S-61N fuselage conversion for a Sea King kit.
