Title: Tranquility Base 3 years later - 1/48 Dragon Lunar Module
Post by: Buzzbomb on October 11, 2013, 08:00:28 PM
As we know man can be messy.. we leave stuff everywhere.
So what would the moon landing sites be like 3 years later after the Lunar Missions have finished ?
Well I do not say that this is accurate by any means.. sheesh the Ultraviolet bombardments would have cause all sorts of damage to the stuff left up there.
I am going with what I do know.
At each site we left a LEM Descent stage and all the gear that was jettisoned, like the PLSS packs, rubbish bags plus the detrious of the Ascent Stage liftoff.
And in the case of Apollo 11.. the flag blown over.

I have always had a hankering to build this, so this is my take of what it might look like.
Still work in progress
(http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/SSM/lmmoon1.jpg)

I have used the newer Dragon 1/48 Apollo 11 Lunar Module kit.. which I reckon is pretty nice. It already has nice foil texture and comes with gold painted Descent stage part.. which give how colourful the LM is, is rather pointless.
I added the MESA and LRS bays from scratch.
Cheers
Brian T

Nice one !  :)

Now all you need is a little green man with a broom and a grumpy look on his face.....

So when will they clean up all that trash they left behind?  Damned inconsiderate astronauts.  Did not even take the time to pick up after themselves :)

Very nice work!  I think it captures the event location rather well.

Excellent !  makes a change from all those burnt-out tank models we see.  Would the foot-prints be visible after the blow from take-off ??

Weaver .... green men are from Mars, Moon-men are the grey type so they blend in with the scenery ;) .......... (guess I really should scan & post the drawing I have).

Excellent, Brian. I hope you've seen this Apollo 11 traverse map below, Which you can compare to LROC imaging (for all Apollo lunar missions). The Flip Book feature is pretty cool: http://featured-sites.lroc.asu.edu/ (http://featured-sites.lroc.asu.edu/)

Shouldn't Martians be red by that standard then?  ;)

Anyway, who said he was a local? Menial job in an unsalubrious area: probably migrant labour....

Excellent, Brian. I hope you've seen this Apollo 11 traverse map below,

Did see that, there is some excellent stuff out there.
This model is no where near 100% accurate.. for that you need to go to somewhere like http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal9/8001-8100/gal8100-Lunar-Module-Malaguti/00.shtm (http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/Gal9/8001-8100/gal8100-Lunar-Module-Malaguti/00.shtm)
There are a few other recommended sites as well, not the least being Space in Miniature http://www.spaceinminiature.com/ (http://www.spaceinminiature.com/)

So a final fit before at he last details go on such as decals (oops :-[ forgot those) for the Descent Stage.

Absolutely brilliant! Everyone remembers Neil Armstrong's famous words, but nobody ever wonders about the mess left behind.

The imagination in this concept is impressive and the execution flawless!

Love this.  Have a similar idea but with a slightly different take.

Not all - some are black (like the Red & Black Lectroids from BUCKAROO BANZAI)

NASA should be criticized for leaving such a mess on the lunar surface!

Great build!  :)
