Since the other builds went down well i thought you might like to see the current builds progress.
top and bottom are together now preshading started..
Closeup of the cockpit.. Apart from some foil straps its all OTB...
Gluing the top and bottom together left a odd gap along the rear of the wing so it was filled and reshaped:
Before

After

Rear end attached, preshaded and underside painted

Underside.. Tail planes are being sprayed seperately so they dont get in the way...

Can anyone spot the masking fail ? lol
-
Lovely work so far Chris. ;)
-
Coming along nicely.

Purty
Hopefully she will be... :)
-
If I had a dollar for everytime a mask failed, I could tell my boss what I really think of him ;D
-
That's some pro-style detailing on the 'pit.
I'm already looking forward to your next update!
Brian da Basher
-
Actually all i did on the cockpit was add some foil straps... Oh and replace the hud with some scrap cos the carpet monster ate the kit one... :(
Thankyou very much though :)

It may not have seemed like much to you, Chris, but it sure looks every bit the business to me!
I find detailing very challenging which is one of the reasons I work in smaller scales.

-
Looking good Chris!
-
Hopefully gonna get some more done this weekend :D
And thankyou again guys :D
-
Ok i promised a update... Due to forces out of my control i didnt get much done but...
Masked up for the upper surfaces:
After the overspray issues earlier i was taking no chances with the underside....
But all in all it came out well ! :)
Oddly the masking managed to rub a lil paint off just behind the cockpit as you can see here.. But nothing that cant be very easily fixed...
...Now how to go about the weathering... Choices choices.... ???
-
So nice... Obviously more care and skill than me. Keep posting.
-
Very nice.
-
So did anyone notice the mistake i've had to spend all day fixing !? Yep i WAS going to decal today only to discover id forgotten that the upper colour lips over the bottom by about half a cm on the leading edge... And i'd done such a good job masking up a sharp line down the wings...
Maybe decalling tomorrow instead... :/ lol
-
I have to agree with BdB, that cockpit really looks sharp :)
Does the Hobbyboss kit come with a seperate rear fuselage then ? is there a choice of tails or something like that ?
-
Yes the rear is separate as you can see in the first few pics as for different tails the answer is sort of... Theres only one in the box but it allows them to make the German one in a different box by just changing to the taller tail...
http://www.relishmodels.co.uk/hobby-boss-1-72-sea-hawk-fga-6.html (http://www.relishmodels.co.uk/hobby-boss-1-72-sea-hawk-fga-6.html) Mine :)

-
That separate rear fuselage suggests some interesting whiffing potential too!

They could do a P.1072 (Seahawk prototype with a rocket in it's tail): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_P.1072 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_P.1072)
-
Its a good job i hadnt seen that till now :D lol
-
Following this Seahawk build is like watching a how to do it show.
Cockpit is looking so good and upper lower color break is right on.
Nose back including intakes looks like a Venom. Might handle Venom wings OK after smoothing out beginning of tail booms.
-
It would involve a fair amount of cutting though... This kit the entire top side and bottom side are big pieces... The fusalage and wing is all one piece... If i WAS going to swop the wings i might use the Airfix kit instead.. The wings are separate and its rubbish anyway so you might as well cut it up for whiff :D
-
Great start.
-
Few things are hotter than a classic Royal Navy scheme. This one's gonna be great!
Brian da Basher
-
Thank you for the belief !
I got plenty of time to mess it up yet ! lol

That's the spirit!....Errr I mean you'd better not! She's lookin' good Chris :)
-
Disaster !... Well at least an oh bugger...
I said i still had plenty of problems and now ive found one, starting decaling as you guys have really inspired me to crack on... And i encountered a problem im not sure how to fix :(
(http://images109.fotki.com/v785/photos/4/90504/10295085/photo-vi.jpg)
Yep.. The decals are WAYYY too thin.. And the seagrey is showing through the white... Which means problems for all the roundells AND the diamonds on the front... Hmm plenty of ways i COULD fix it but not sure which is best :/
Any recommendations ? please ? lol

Another roundel over the top of it maybe ?

Yeah im looking right now... So much for cheap build while i calm my frustrations on my main build :/
Looking at this? :

Not cheap but it should do the job...

That'd be my first approach too. Now that you know, you may be able to find some white or yellow sections of spare decals you can cut to shape for under the others.
Good luck!

-
Well ive ordered the Xtradecals... being from Hannants i wouldnt expect an update for quite a while :/ Sorry guys :(
-
You're very patient, Chris. Far more patient than I am. If I had that problem, I'd probably risk it and try to paint over the places where the the colors show through by hand.
Not that I'm known for the most rational or efficient solutions.

What I've done in the past is to use a mask to paint a white circle VERY slightly smaller than the decal, then put the decal over it. Pain to do, but it does work.
-
That was one option... Only my circular masking isnt good... Straight lines i can do... Circles not so much :(
I only hope Hannants dont take their usual eight zillion months to arrive... Last time i ordered something by the time it turned up i forgot what i'd ordered.. :/

Recently my Hannants orders have arrived in 2 working days ;)

I'll cross my fingers then :D

Me neither, so what I did was this:
1. Stick a piece of 18mm Tamiya tape to a piece of glass
2. Cut out the circle using a circle-cutter with a FRESH blade
3. Stick another piece of Tamiya tape over the first one to act as a "carrier" and preserve the circular shape. Make sure that the top piece of tape has "tabs" so that you can separate it from the bottom one again.
4. Peel both pieces of tape off the glass and apply to the model
5. Peel off the top piece of tape to leave a perfectly circular mask on the model
-
Ok so new circle cutting compass, roll of frisket, cutting matt and spare blades arrived today to go along with the xtradecals that came last week so tomorrow i'll see if we can finally get somewhere ! Sorry for the delay folks !
-
Chris, it might be easier to paint the roundels on blank decal paper so you can have multiple attempts without worrying about possible mistakes directly on the model.
-
RIGHT ! most of the decals on now.... Display base mostly done... Pictures soon once my new booth thing arrives :D
Question though... On the subject of dressing up my base.... Did Seahawks leak at all ? Anywhere in particular ?
-
It's a real treat to see this one come together, Chris!
I can't speak specifically to Seahawks, but in general, there might be leaks of hydraulic fluid near the landing gear, flaps and speedbrakes. Perhaps a little jetfuel on the ground tarmac where it could've spilled if groundcrew weren't careful with the hose.
Hope this helps,
Brian da Basher
-
Right sorry for the delay... Heres where we're at as of tonight...
Bonus i now have my photo booth (Sort of) Working :D

After much talk on more JMN forums than this... The upper serials have now been removed... Despite the instructions saying i should have serials on both the underside AND top of the wings... Apparently this made the JMN's angry... As this is wrong... oops lol
To be fair i thought it looked odd...
-
You're much kinder than I am, Chris. I'd have left them on just to annoy them. Besides, I like the way they look. But it's your model and I'm just glad to be along to see where you take it.
Brian da Basher
-
Like i said i wasnt sure it looked right myself... so.. Anyway varnish o'sealing is drying then its very light weathering time... :D
-
This way, you've got the best of both worlds. The end result is accurate but you annoyed JMNs anyway ;D
-
My next build... (Well ive just about started it)..... is proper whiff so that should proper piss them off... ;D
-
Hey Chris,
Is this finished yet and if so, where`s the pics? ;)
-
Sorry work and such got in the way... However i am as we speak waiting for the flory wash to dry.... Ive also been working on a base for it but more on that later... Rest assured when i have something to show i will :)
-
Looking forward to it. :)
-
Right managed to take a few pics tonight to give you an idea...
Under carriage bits :
Flory models dark dirt wash wiped off completely only just showing off the panel lines and no more.. Note damaged roundel :icon_twisted: Must try photos again after another touch up :
Upper side showing off the gloss finsh but not really showing off the wash... :
Base what i built :) £1 photo frame with fine sandpaper painted up in a Royal Navy style :
Angle makes it look bent but i swear its straight as a die... Funny optical illusions aside im happy enough...
Looking forward to getting her on her wheels but it may have to wait till NEXT weekend... :/
-
Nice!!! 8)
-
Thank ya :)
-
Love the base Chris and I`m going to have to `knick` that idea off you I`m afraid.... >:D
The Seahawk is going look so goooood when you put it and the base together.
Top work. :)
-
Steal away... Its certainly not a professional way of doing it but it works for me and my cabinet :D
-
Dark gray fine grit sandpaper is a BRILLIANT idea for an aircraft carrier deck!
-
Actually it was cheap brown tesco value originally... I just shot some Medium sea grey over it and it looked the part :D
-
Most excellent work C :-* Can't wait to see her finished :)
-
Right im afraid lots of other things got in the way again this weekend but i did get a hour or so... Therefore lots of touch- ups and get the nost wheel in place...
Note the door at the VERY front is still missing... Im gonna wait till its on all three wheels to pop that on so i can get the right "Hanging there" angle...
Chris
-
Good thinking. really love that big ace card decal
-
I have spares of that ACE too :D
-
Right just a few bench shots to keep things going..
Underside with main legs and inner doors on.. Please note all my references show these closed when on the ground so thats what i did...
Smaller fiddly peices coming together...
Till next time !
-
What a little jewel!!!! :-* :-* :-*
-
A "friendly little jet" as she was once described...
-
Delighted to see your update, Chirs! This beauty is some mighty fine eye-candy!
Brian da Basher
-
Cheers folks ! Hope to get her finished up soon as im itching to get on with the next one / the super secret project :)
Chris
-
A few more bench shots as we finsh off all the niggley bits...
As you can see canopy is on waiting for Kristal Klear to dry before masking off the framing..
Paper clip in foreground will become the pitot probe as the kit part is annoyingly cast onto the sprue half way up its length..
Blade ariel fix came from some spare etched brass... Came out well i think...
Right more waiting for things to dry :/
Chris F
-
Painted myself into corner with the canopy and had to order the precut masks... they FINALLY arrived this morning so hopefully get this thing finished and onto the next project !!!
-
Hurry up!!! ;)
-
Excellent work, Chris! Especially the details!
Brian da Basher

Right yet again a big learning experience... Im gonna get some more pro pics taken when a mate with a dslr comes round but.. Im calling her DONE !!
At home on its base..
With serious flash it shows off some of the tonal variation i managed.. Quite proud of how it came out since it was my first attempt at preshading with an airbrush
(http://images109.fotki.com/v786/photos/4/90504/10295085/photo3-vi.jpg)
In the cabinet with my other Fleet Air Arm builds..
Thats all for now folks ! :D
-
A definite work of art!
-
Thank you.. Sorry it took so long :icon_surprised:
-
Right.. Professional pics done by my mate Phil Earles so... All Finished :)
Hobby boss 1:72nd SEAHAWK FGA-6

Lovely lil plane and a lovely lil kit :) Highly recommended as any real issues i had were purely down to my ham-fistedness...
-
Ham fisted? If you're ham-fisted then I must be buffalo rump-roast fisted by comparison. Excellent work.
-
Oh i always seem to get myself out of the sticky situations but i had a few on this build as previously explained and to be honest they were school boy errors i should have seen coming... Still im very happy how it came out in the end :)
-
And Mr Chicken i wouldnt dare work in the tiny scales you do ! Your work involves some mini marvels !!
-
If you're planning to use the black and yellow stripes around the rear of the fuselage ... don't. HobbyBoss have made no allowance for the curvature of the fuselage in the design of these decals, so they don't remotely fit.
-
Also, note that the inner main undercarriage doors should be closed. They only open during rotation of the undercarriage, or possibly for maintenance.
-
Um.. Tis finished so no need to worry about the seuz markings... And i know, thats why theyre shut :) You should be able to see them on a earlier build pic.. :D
-
Gorgeous!
-
Cheers folks !!
Onto the next build :)
