Steam Punk Airship
« on: September 07, 2013, 10:05:18 PM »
Using the body of the Pegasus Mercury 9, and a 1/144 shuttle tank and srb parts, we have the start of a steam punk air ship.

Great thinking bluesman! I've often thought about using the SRB tank as an airship but I've been too cheap to actually get one.

Watching with much interest,

I am actually just using the nose of the tank, which is the aft end of the airship, the SRB nozzle and tip of the SRB became the nose.

Adding details to the open bays, I will add some plumbing with wire. The details are done mostly with leftover and chopped up bits from the Mercury 9 kit, but the detail on the side is a chopped little plastic shrimp fork.

The  open bays are asymmetrical on purpose, but I like it. Also this craft is hereby christened "Raging Sea" in honor of a local band here in town who's leader, one Mister Shawn Craver is a huge steampunk fan.

This amazing marvel of technology is powered by massive steam turbines, and collects water vapor through scoops by flying through clouds. Soaring at the unheard of speed of 115 mph and cruises at the dizzying altitude of 10,500 feet.

Dont ask me how you lift massive steam engines and and all steel airship shell into the sky with out a gas bag, or how it works, just enjoy the spectacle.

You said/wrote that so well.  Am sure we were all wondering about its water supply and now we know.
Western half of Washington state would be ideal 10 months a year for operations.
How long is model ?    Maybe a ruler or coin in next picture for size comparison.
Have a great build going there  :)

The model is 11 and 3/4 inches long. I am scaling it at 1/1000 because I want the thing to be massive.

Pondered Bluesman

We usually resorted to an Aetheric reflector in the SPS. Cavourite didn't come along 'til quite late, and tended to be difficult to regulate. Smashing build so far, Justin.

Thanks Craig. I found a really cool long spike to add to the nose, and I have decided on a color scheme of a rust red, copper and green.

I also want to re scribe some of the lines, and use the lines as guides for raised paneling. I do not want this thing smooth I want it plated and bumpy and filligreed.

A little more progress on the Great Air Ship Raging Sea. I added some stabilzer fins, and I will be using a modified tailfin from and F-105 for the main

Steam Punk band Abney Park have a "back story" involving the airship Ophelia (pictured in the background below).

(They've broadened their genre/s to Post-Apocalyptic, Tribal, Steam Punk (Shanties).)
