In a development of the Top Gun syllabus for F-14 crews, the USN developed a program where the crews deployed for a two week period onto a Carrier during the ships trials after refit so as to expose the crews to scenario's other than turn and burn dogfights.

Here the Tomcat's faced Hornets, one of which is configured with Harpoon and HARM missiles - the Tomcat's needing to identify which Hornet is the main threat. The Hornets also had assistance in some sorties from an EA-6B Prowler, also fitted with Harpoon and Harm as well as jamming pods. Note also one Hornet carried wing-tip mounted AMRAAM's.

Unlike the shore-based dogfighting, the Tomcats used a number of different configurations. In the mix shown here, Tomcats carry 2 x AIM-54 (201 NK, 203 AB), 3 x AIM-7 (200 AA, 300 NK), 2 x AIM-7 (201 AG), 2 x AIM-54 and 2 x AIM-7 (100 NE, 200 NL) and 4 x AIM-54 (106 AD). Also on the deck is a TARPS (Recce Pod) equipped Tomcat for escort sorties rather than straight defensive scenarios.
