1/72 USAAF Bell F-18A Bullet
« on: November 01, 2014, 04:45:49 AM »
Here is the Bell F-18A Bullet. A very high speed photo reconnaissance aircraft used over Japan in late 1945.  It was dropped from a B-29 mothership (not shown) and flown at near Mach 1 or beyond Mach 1 speeds depending on the air threat.  The single K-18 camera removed some of the tankage so external drop tanks were used first then dropped before the final run. A small downward looking periscope is located under the cockpit.

A secret airfield was built in China to recover the F-18A.

This is a rescue from the SOD (shelf of doom). I was hoping to finish it for the The Snoops, Sensors, Spooks, & Spies etc GB but a leak in the liquid oxygen tank preventing me from finishing it on time.

Build notes:
Stock Tamiya X-1. I removed the extra pitot tubes. The drop tanks are from a 1/100 A-6A. Added the periscope bulge. Decals from an after market P-51 sheet.
Work in progress ::

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

Very nice!  Would have been an interesting camera platform in real life.
