Title: Spitfire single-floatplane, Was Re: Brewster Buffalo floatplane
Post by: ericr on July 10, 2014, 12:44:11 AM
I had this cheap old Airfix Buffalo, and one or two spare SOC Seamew by Dujin, so I tried out a mix,
and it comes out quite suprisingly natural, doesn't it?

Nice, elegant and convincing.
SOme decals woould make it more real in my personal opinion.
But I like it a lot also as it is!

Nice
Looks eminently suitable for an island hopping campaign around, say the Pacific
(Other campaign areas are available)
A couple of 20mm Cannon in the wings should sort out the opposition
One might also like to consider a slightly less conspicuous colour scheme
Unless of course your surname is von Richthofen

Regards
Keith

thank you all!

I like to do my models in monochrome red, yellow or blue : it is a bit an extreme choice, but I find that it underlines the lines and shapes. So it is just a matter of style, but I certainly recognize the ptential of decals, especially with creative patterns as you do, andonio64 : a giraffe patterns would be great :) (it has been done in the real world actually, for the Sikorsky S-38, and there is a rein kit with corresponding decal sheet, very impressive)

Hmmm…this is inspiring…I wonder about a tattered/weathered looking one in the markings of the Military Air Service of the Royal Netherlands East Indian Army but with twin floats similar to the Wildcat floatplane.  This could be operating from the islands in the Dutch East Indies (i.e. modern day Indonesia).  Or maybe even the same, but in RAAF markings….hmmmm ::)

So, in essence, something like this:

or this:

crossed with this:

Beautiful job, but for the south Pacific, wouldn't blue be a better choice than red?  It would still show the lines just as well but blend better with the scenery.

Nice - does look balanced and RW :)
Though I think you built the lowest performance Buffalo yet ;D
Pit it against the Slowy Jet in a race ;)

I love it as it is: with bright colour and no national/war markings... :-*

I hadn't thought of the Wildcat floats configuration, but it would certainly apply nicely, given the similar barrel shape.

I could have used blue indeed, but it came out red in my mind  8)

So I had remainings of a PM Models Spitfire (a very very basic kit ...), the twin-float version of which I used the floats for something else.

I also had yet another Dujin kit of the Seamew, providing for the same beautiful single float as for the Buffallo  shown before and above (and the rest has been used for other projects ...  :icon_ninja:).

So I thought about cleaning up my stash in a creative way, continuing in the red vein as before.

Besides, I stumbled upon this :

and that :

which amply grounded in retrospect what I did :

Beautiful!!  And if that center float picks up the main landing gear trunnions, it's probably more structurally efficient than the twin-float version.

does no gear in the wings mean more guns?

thanks all!

single central floaters are indeed a bit more elegant in general

Not without a whole bunch of redesign that would drive the real world (TM) costs through the roof.  You'd have a better shot at replacing the main gear with extra fuel cells.

Wow, how did I miss this one?

Love the Spitfire.

I have contemplated a Typhoon and/or Tempest float plane, developed to provide air defence, as well as spotting, for the  battleships that carry them.

Thanks!

a Tempest might well look good :
single floats have some elegance indeed anyway
