Roman Steam Galley - Ave Imperator - Fini !
« on: October 30, 2020, 07:46:01 PM »
All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and the Steam Engine, what have the Romans ever done for us?

This is a full on inspiration build from Nonobars most excellent idea of a Steam Roman ship on Whatif Modeller
https://www.whatifmodellers.com/index.php?topic=35382.555

I had parts of a Roman Galley left over from another build where I built this IceRigger
http://www.modelblokez.org.au/bthpix/whatif/floaty/icewolf_3.jpg

But as a point of difference, I wanted to go side paddlewheeler and show a bit more of the engine gubbins

using some of the very early vertical boiler types as a rough guide, but going for impression only.
So early days, but enthusiasm is high.

Thanks Nonobars for the terrific inspiration

Excellent Quod-si, Vapor Romana nave! This must be the 30BC version, since that's when the Romans introduced the twin ship boiler engines.

This has all kinds of awesomeness! I liked nönöbär's take on a steam-powered Roman ex-galley but wasn't too sure about the Archimedes screw. Your paddlewheeler is much the superior concept

Just about done as far as the build

I figured that the steam would be perhaps temperamental, like early steam engines were. So the plan was to have the front oar stations still in play. Also useful for port navigation
That meant my head said I had to build a stowage rack for the oars when not in use. Plus a view of the scratchbuilt Ballista

Couple of General Views. Iacomus Wattus is there for a Scale feel. Standard Airfix Roman from the ridiculous Chariot they included.

next is painting then a lot of rigging I suppose.

The voices are also saying I need to track down the "Castle structure" that I did not use in the Ice Rigger to put forward. Bit concerned with it interfering with the sail though.
Also considering Shields On or Shields Off.

I look at this as a small ship, perhaps the equivelent of a Destroyer for Coastal Trade Protection (or Protection Racket/Privateer)

Protection Racket Privateer, late Republican period; when the entire state was, basically, run by Mafia-style Famiglia (amongst which the Julian clan were a minor, but growing, power). ;)

FWIW, Shields On! ... a Roman Steamship Marine is a Pilum-man first!

Ok Team, this is pretty much it.

Interior painting, which is never seen anyway.

How she looks now.

More, with a few closer shots

Whilst doing the rigging, which is a bit abbreviated to the kit instructions, was swear fest with my sausage fingers, it really was worth the effort.
Not sure I would do a full rig 17th Century Man O War but who knows.

Thanks for the interest gang.
Clearly the tech is way beyond anything the Romans could achieve, but these tech jumps just need the appropriate moment of inspiration to drive them forward.

Nice combo of whimsical & realistic.  Impressed with details and finish and (UGH) rigging.   Serrated top of stack is right-on touch.

Beautiful!!  What happens when Greek science is combined with Roman practical engineering attitudes (yes, they had them, how else have their roads and aquaducts survived so long?).  I can just see this as a patrol vessel at any Roman port around Mare Nostrum.

The steam galley came out great! The wolf's head looks appropriate and I love the shield colors!

Great stuff! I concur on the shield colours and those strakes fore and aft of the paddles would make great fighting/boarding platforms

Very cool build!

<...> ... a Roman Steamship Marine is a Pilum-man first!

Roman Steamship Marines on the shores of Tripolis? Sure. No big deal. Short sail across the Mediterranean.
Roman Steamship Marines in the Halls of Montezuma? I'd love to hear about that one.  :o
Cheers,
Moritz
