Apparently there's a new company by the name of Kitty Hawk. Their first kit will be a 1/48 F-94C Starfire! :icon_surprised: LINK! (http://www.themodellingnews.com/2012/03/new-kitmaker-preview-kitty-hawk-models.html)

Interesting. I am tempted to do a carrier based version.
-
Received my pair of these kits yesterday. Can take pics of the parts if anyone wants. In the box, the kit looks fantastic. Some of the parts are so thinly molded they are actually translucent. Even comes with three little plated ball bearings for noseweight.
Problem:
One kit has a decal sheet with a very large "X" written over all the markings in ballpoint pen
The other kit has a decal that looks like someone rolled very heavy gear-wheels all over it.
I've written to the mfg, requesting two replacement decal sheets and will let you know if I get a response.
-
Thanks mate. Let us know how you go. I have been thinking of getting one of these kits myself.

Great. Another B. Give me an A. :< (In 1/72!)
-
Very excited!!!

Kitty Hawk Models web page (http://www.kittyhawkmodel.com/)
Not that I am overly enamored with the whole F-35 JSF thing but I am looking forward to seeing the kit on the shelf. I will definitely inform my LHS about it and let them know I want at least a quartet of the things but I suppose I should curb my enthusiasm until after I see what the MSRP is going to be on the kit.
Now the question is will they follow through with the F-35A and F-35C?
-
Well, it'll have to be better than the old Panda kit. I'd prefer an A or C over a B anyday however.
Alvis 3.1
-
It definitely looks the part and I can say that the portions I worked on look to be accurately done, though I'll need further data to say for certain (some panels are solid on the early, flight dynamics, EMD aircraft and transparent on later aircrafy with full mission equipment.
PS. Even though I've been away from it for 4 years, I can still point out what a lot of the panels are for special equipment. 'Till be interesting to see if they include an optional deployed refueling probe. Given the similarities between the different variants, I do hope they do all three.
-
Here's hoping there'll be an A in 1/72 soonish. I'll need one for my RW build set, even if I'm not so keen on it! (I'm not keen on the Supersonic Tinkertoy, but I've got one in the stash for a CF build anyways...)
-
Interesting. I am tempted to do a carrier based version.
Consider crossing it with a T2V-1 "Seastar" for that (you'll need to scratchbuild the Seastar bits as I know of only one vacform kit of that and it was produced years ago). Also, take a look at the old Aerofax Minigraph on the F-94 for some ideas.

Lockheed were one step ahead of you with their CL-352 which was an all-weather fighter interceptor version of the T2V Seastar. It added an APQ-50 radar FCS and either two Sparrows or two Sidewinders with two 19 cell rocket pods (2.75”). By using the lightweight airframe and the boundary control layer wing system this Seastar could be operated from US Navy anti-submarine aircraft carriers (CVS) and presumably ex RN light fleet carriers. Engine options included the original J33 or the lighter and more powerful J54. Span: 13.08m (42’11”), length 12.17m (39’11”), wing area 21.63 sq m (232.8 sqf), loaded weight 9,299 kg (20,500 lbs), max speed 888 kph at 1,525 m (493 knots at 5,000’), initial rate of climb 25.4 mps (5,000’ per min), combat range 935 km (520 NM), max range 1,730 km (960 NM). With the J54 loaded weight was reduced to 8,899 kg (19,620 lbs), max speed boosted to 917 kph (509 knots) and range by 75%. Unfortunately it lost out to the cheaper (surprise!) but zippier A4D Skyhawk for the CVS defensive fighter role. Which is a shame because the Seastar would have looked awesome in RAN service from HMAS Melbourne!

Looking at the link you posted, and specifically the decal sheet, they obviously plan to release an A model in the future (though one could easily modify the B) as well as some possibly (for now at least) whiffs. Also makes doing my planned RAN FAA B model so much easier!

Actually, no, modifying the "B" to an "A" would be a pain, because in addition to recontouring the upper surface, you'd need to form a new canopy. The "A" and "C" share one, the "B" has a different and shorter one. In order to use the same mechanism for all three, you get that forward hinged canopy, despite the problems it causes in the forward equipment bays. I should note that I was on the design team for that area and I'm quite familiar with the pain and complications that mechanism caused us,
-
True. Either way, from the decal range, me thinks an A isn't far off anyway.
-
I plan on buying a few F-35Bs. :)

CyberModeler (http://[url=http://www.cybermodeler.com/) has posted several images showing the kit contents in the Kitty Hawk Models 1/48th scale F-35B Lightning II (http://www.cybermodeler.com/news/kitty.shtml). Additional images I should be available as soon as the kits are shipped and made available on the store shelves until then we will have to get by with this latest tease from Michael Benolkin. Not sure if Michael took images of the kit or the images were provided by Kitty Hawk Models.

Hard to tell from these photos just how pronounced it is, but I am a tad concerned that the panel lines might be a bit overdone on this kit. It almost has a crude toy like appearance...or am I just being too harsh?
See here (http://www.themodellingnews.com/2012/07/constructed-engine-sprue-shots-markings.html)
-
Do you mean the slightly raised sections on the surfaces? What they called "boiler plating" on the 1/48 Hasegawa F-22? Hasgawa caught a lot of flak for that, even though it's not that exaggerated (LINK (http://www.nellis.af.mil/shared/media/photodb/photos/110921-F-MQ656-341.jpg) <-- Warning! BIG pic!) under certain lighting conditions.
I suppose the shiny plastic adds to that effect and on the real deal, painted and flat-coated, it won't look all that bad. As turned out to be the case in Hasegawa's Raptor.
-
It almost has a crude toy like appearance...or am I just being too harsh?
IMHO most kits look toy like when unpainted. Probably a different story with some painting and weathering as Moritz has said... Sure hope anyway!
-
As I know from personal experience, it's not a good idea to form an opinion of the surface detailing
of a model based on photos.
When the first sprue shots of the 1/72 ICM He 70G appeared online I was very skeptical of their reproduction
of the plywood skinning on the wings. It looked terrible and extremely heavy-handed in the photos. Boy
was I wrong, in real-life the surface texture is beautiful and very subtle.
-
That's what I am hoping guys...I guess we will just have to wait and see.
-
Let the feeding frenzy begin.
I found this at the ARC forums this afternoon. The Kitty Hawk F-35 kit is now available on eBay through a seller known as hkdragon01.
Link: Kitty Hawk F-35B Lightning II #80102 - NEW (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kitty-Hawk-F-35B-Lightning-II-80102-NEW-/251125760102?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D1210218582163847231%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26)
The catch is that the kit will not be available until the second week in September.
-
I might wait a little bit...since I will probably be overseas again when said kit would arrive...you know what that might mean!
-
Britmodeller has a REVIEW (http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234924464) of the F-35B kit.
-
Ok, I collected two of the F-35B kits today. At first glance they appear well done. The external panel detailing is actually quite fine and nowhere near as extreme as the early photos indicated. Haven't done any dry fit ups just yet so I can't say how well the fitting will be. Weapons look a little crude to my eye, though that is hardly of major concern. I am disappointed there is no gunpod though I am sure there will be a resin one or similar released shortly. Decals look good and already provide some whiff (currently) options.
Now, as to the important question: what are my plans for this pair? Well one is definitely going to be RAN FAA...possibly in a high viz tail scheme. The other? Not sure, though I am toying with either Israeli or RNZAF or RAF ( though in green scheme) or even a UCAV...

The F-35A picture is interesting, especially since they show the DAS ports blanked out as they are on the early prototypes rather than what production aircraft, and the later prototypes, have. 'Twill be interesting to see just what the kits actually have.

IRIS-T on a Mirage F.1? ??? The only nation that operates both the F.1 and IRIS-T is Spain, but I haven't read anything about an integration of the IRIS-T on their Mirages.
I hope they'll scale this one down to 1/72. I'd buy a dozen! :)

What about Python 5? Not to worry though - consider them useful spares... ;)

Technical question on that Jaguar, it's a French version and on the starboard wing there's a three-bomb carrier. Is that specifically for the French version or did the RAF versions also use it ?

I don't usually go for non-USMC airframes, but I have to say that both the Gripen and the Mirage are making me rethink my position.
-
Maybe do both as USMC platforms?
-
Maybe do both as USMC platforms?
I was having that exact same thought! They're going on the wish/future projects list.
-
Maybe do both as USMC platforms?
I vaguely remember reading something about a marinised Mirage F1 being proposed before the Super Etendard was developed. Now that would have been interesting as an Etendard and Crusader replacement.

Oohh, that would give me lots of neat high-viz schemes to play with, too...now I'm really convinced that I need to add these to my stash.

I like your thinking! There was a supposed proposal to acquire Naval Mirage F.1/M53:

Su-22M-4 1:48 posted to their Facebook page today.
Edit: Untrue

I think at this point I've given up on them doing anything of their back catalogue in 1/72.
However, I do have to say they've got a very, very eclectic palette of subjects!

Great news - about time there was a new MiG-25 kit.
-
May 2013 release for the MiG-25. :D
-
I love their choices of subject, so varied! I wonder what's after the Foxbat...
-
Part of the fun is waiting to see.
-
I just really wish they'd be doing all this stuff in a civilised scale, namely 1/72!!
I'd've bought one of everything they've released so far, if they were in 1/72. Indeed, I've even considered getting the F-94 and F-35A even in 1/48... (though on that note, why is there still not an F-35A in 1/72?)
-

Not that Google could tell me. Though I did find one website that said Italeri's got one coming this year, but I didn't find it on their website, so I dunno...

The Cybermodeller Kit Release table sez:
Manufacturer Subject Scale Number Release Date
Italeri F-35A Lightning II 72 1331 2013
-
Yeah, that's I think where I found the mention. Though find it odd I didn't see it on Italeri's website? The only thing I find there related to the F-35 is a 1:100 die cast model...
-
Both Italeri and Academy have announced kits of the F-35A in 1/72 from new toolings at the Nuremberg Toy Fair for this year.
CyberHobby/Dragon had announced kits of the F-35 some time (couple of years?) ago, but they haven't surfaced yet.
Really wish Kitty Hawk would scale-down the Mirage F.1 to 1/72. Especially when they get round to doing the single-seater. :-*

That Big Mig is huge news! If its half way decent its a license to print money. The REvell kit is hell to make right :-X

A Gripen just looks good doesn't it.
-
I always feel it has a very naval look about it, as if it belongs on a CVL flight deck as a Skyhawk replacement.

Like this perhaps:

Not masters, most likely stereolith prototypes from the CAD dataset to check shapes prior
to the moulds being cut.

I will be definitely picking up at least one each of the Viper and Venom. Kitty Hawk will be getting some of my retirement money when these hit the shelves.
-
that Yankee and Zulu look gorgeous. I suspect a number of folk at work will likely pick them up; especially the guys working on them.
-
On top of those Kitty Hawk are also doing a 1/48 Kaman SH-2D/F:

Of course all of the whiners on the other forums are going to complain that KittyHawk did not release the single engine H-2A and H-2B :)
The positive of all this is that the MatchBox/Revell kit will now hopefully drop in value so the kit collectors will feel some pain.
The Wikipedia page for the Kaman SH-2 Seasprite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaman_SH-2_Seasprite) describes a proposed gunship version of the H-2 that was to be named Tomahawk in U.S. Army service. That could be improved upon with a bit of kit bashing I suspect :)
-
Doing a HH-2C CSAR aircraft could make for an interestingly different look, too. Wonder how a HH-2G would go over?
-
You're onto something there Evan. I was thinking of a USAF Landsprite to replace HH-43 Huskies in the short range SAR/airbase support role.
Hmm, wonder what a HH-2 would look like in SEA? >:D
-
I wonder how it would have looked in RAN FAA colours...oh yes sorry......nothing like scope creep

Forgotten the sorry saga of the SH-2G and the RAN? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaman_SH-2G_Super_Seasprite#Australia)
-
Exactly the point I was trying to make, how to turn a perfectly capable helicopter into a colossal waste of money, brains and talent (WOMBAT). Start with a proven design with a perfectly adequate current configuration and then specify a two instead of three person crew and the associated complex flight control system before changing the certification agency and requirements resulting in the cancelation of the project. Wait a couple of years and sell your airframes to your neighbour, who has been successfully operating the type in its original form for over a decade, for conversion back to three crew configuration. I remember reading somewhere that even had the two crew arrangement on the helos worked the learning curve for the observors to fill their new expanded role was so great that the RAN expected a very significant increase in the number of washout during training.
The saddest part of this debacle is the fact the ships they were intended for (and would be so much more satisfactory with our current border protection issues) were cancelled removing the RANs need for the helicopters before any of them were actually ordered! That said an order for SH-2Fs or Lynxs in the 70s to operate from the OHP FFGs would have been smart, insignia blue with white uppers? Then again it likely would have been cheaper to slightly expand the size of the planned corvette to fit the Seahawk than to acquire another type.
-
Wow - looks like the new MiG-25 will come with a two seater option:

A new 1/48 TF-9J Cougar is on the way
And already the dedicated group of whiners, complainers, et al are complaining about the nose being wrong. Considering the object in the image is nothing more than a prototype at this point it amazes me at how quickly these tools start the b1tching and whining based on little to no information.
A TF-9J Cougar is welcomed in 1:48th scale considering the alternatives have been terribly expensive or unobtainable, sometimes both. Now what would it take to make a TF-9 Two Seat Panther? :)
-
Now what would it take to make a TF-9 Two Seat Panther? :)
Not a lot methink - I've been looking at the Falcon 1/72nd TF-9J conversion with just that thought - mind you, the straight TF-9J is damned pretty......

<...>
Okay, so when is the time to start complaining? The sooner they get these comments, the better. If it's just a rapid prototyping "print-out", there's still hope to get the it fixed. Had this been at the stage of a test-shot, with the steel moulds already being cut, fixing these issues would be FAR more costly.
What more information do you need? There's just that one picture, granted, and the aircraft in it does look like a Twogar, but with some rather hefty problems. Was there anything factually wrong with the comments made on ARC (assuming your talking about that thread)? That the nose is too long, the canopy and rear canopy to fuselage transition look off, that the intake area looks kinda squashed, that the whole fuselage looks kinda squashed (making the fuselage look too thin)?
Yeah, it's just a prototype at this point, but the list of wonky production kits following wonky prototypes is pretty long. The list of decent kits following wonky prototypes is, on the other hand, rather short.

Yay! Really looking forward to these. Especially the B and the C!
Too bad it took them so long, though. They could have had the market cornered for years with a proper F-35A. Now they have to compete with Italeri and Academy for the 1/72 F-35A market.

Now if only they could be so nice as to release a 1/48 F-35C....

Woo Hoo, more kits to add to my stash and dream about building......... ;D

I might just be tempted in buying another 1/48 scale kit ;) (grand total of 1/48 kits in my stash would be --- 12 [I think :-\ ] )

Personally I am waiting for the 1/72 versions, not that I am likely to ever build them, its just the boxes are smaller and will take up less space in my stash :-[

I might have lied, I think it's closer to 18 now, found a EE. Lightning in a stash box a couple of days ago which I can't remember buying, must have got it for a scale-a-rama which didn't pan out or something. I'm up to around a 1000 kits now ('course -- nothing like a few of our fellow members' stashes is it)

wonder if I could scale bash the nose with a 48th Osprey?
Scale it down to a 1:48th scale Testors-Italeri Bronco and 1:72nd scale Osprey (ESCI, Italeri, and, Hasegawa) and see how it looks before going big. Save you some money and it would give you a feel for what would need to be modified.
I like your idea though and it needs to be tested just to see if it would work. The cargo version of the Bronco was always a favourite of mine.

I wonder how close that UH 1 Y could be for a CH-146 Griffon....
-
I wonder how close that UH 1 Y could be for a CH-146 Griffon....
Well the UH-1Y is bigger than the CH-146 and also has a lot more power…though one could conceivably use the new kit as the basis for a developed CH-146... ;)
-

Well the UH-1Y is bigger than the CH-146 and also has a lot more power…though one could conceivably use the new kit as the basis for a developed CH-146... ;)
Or an "evolved" one. After all, the UH-1Y can trace ancestry back to the Bell 212/214 (by way of the 214ST), much as the CH-146 can.

From Kitty Hawk's Faceplace page:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kitty-hawk/736521713066784?fref=nf (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kitty-hawk/736521713066784?fref=nf)
The UH-1Y Venom is expected to be released next month.
Oh, and they're planning to offer/produce helicopter kits in 1/35.
Looks like the moratorium (semi-self-imposed) will be lifted to add a Venom to the stash.

Apparently the commonality between a Venom and a Griffon is pretty small - the rotor system (based on that developed for the Bell-McD LHX) and engine are completely different, the cabin has a plug just aft of the front doors (compare the pics above) and the tail (like the engine and rotor) are shared with the AH-1Z and based on a Cobra tailboom.
So a 412/Griffon from a UH-1Y would involve a lot more cutting and PSR than, say, doing it from a 212/UH-1N.
I just want the rotor from a Venom/Viper for another project....
-
Like I said, an evolved Griffon. The UH-1Y has a longer cabin, like the 214ST, as well as cowlings similar to that aircraft while the transmission is a new one jointly developed for the UH-1Y and AH-1Z. Both also have an improved engine installation and tailpipe design over that flown on the AH-1W.

I really hope they do "legacy" Hueys - they'll be exquisite, if this and the Viper are anything to go by. Beautiful.

I'm at work so can't link, but they've posted CG of a Vought OS2U Kingfisher kit. Quite fortuitous as two ex-RAAF examples are coming to NZ for rebuild to fly.

You never know, 2 RAR battlegroup to RAM MEU is just a name change away ;)
2nd Commando Regiment was 4 RAR (Commando) not so long ago and simply 4 RAR before that. In fact you don't need to go back too far and 2 and 4 RAR were the amalgamated 2/4 RAR brigaded with 1 RAR in the Townsville based ODF (Operational Deployment Force) which was Australia's rapid deployment capability.

I can't see the Army willingly handing over a battalion or two to the RAN just to create a new arm of the military. ;D

Question on the Etendard "goatee". I always wondered why it has this under the nose. Was it required to a address a lateral stability issue?
-
I think it was to contain a single, forward looking camera for the Recce role, there not being sufficient room in the nose otherwise.
-
But it's so thin!! What did they use, prototype iPhone cameras?!
-
Missile guidance antenna housing:
The Nord AS.30 radio-guided air-to-surface missile for ground or antiship attack, with the radio command guidance link antenna fitted to a distinctive fin under the nose. The pilot guided the weapon by "eyeball", with a flare on the missile's tail to keep it visible and the pilot steering by joystick. Some sources claim the fin was also to improve yaw stability. The similar but smaller AS.20 missile could also be carried, but it was generally used as a training store.
From Airvectors site: http://www.airvectors.net/aveten.html#m2 (http://www.airvectors.net/aveten.html#m2)
The recce version, the IVP, had five nose mounted cameras in a redesigned nose.
-
When one ventral anterior fin will do, why not use two? Canted ones.
As to why? I have no idea. Perhaps the second one is for iPhone cameras..... ;D
-
Kitty Hawk is to release a new tool 48th scale version of the Sukhoi "Flanker-E" to eager modellers. In view of what was seen as a disappointment in a rival's kit of the same airframe we would like to see how this one turns out.

Folks, if you look at the following, you will see just how thin the Etendard IVP/IVM nose fin is and also the positioning of cameras on the IVP variant:

Maybe it was just flying by in about 2050 when the Eagle target drone was downed by an F-35XX?

Wishful thinking shooting down an F-15 though
I think you would find it a fairly close match.

I've been following the KH Huey over on ARC, the makers have some decent UH-1 experts working as consultants - the kind who have been scratching/bashing existing kits for years to get every aerial, vent and panel line right.
I thought I've read somewhere no F-15 has ever been shot down in combat
There's a first time for everything! You're right though: the Wiki for type losses (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_F-15_losses) says "Of all aircraft lost, none have been lost in air-to-air combat."

ah, I thought it was going to be 35th

I could see the F6U fitted with a pusher prop ala the Alekseyev 218-III.

David Funke has shared images and product review at modellversium.de for the new 1:48th scale Kitty Hawk UH-1D "Huey" model kit (http://www.modellversium.de/kit/artikel.php?id=11909). Plenty of pictures showing the kit contents and how many parts are in this kit. :)

Personally, I would be interested in doing a carrier based trainer version (akin to the T-45) or perhaps a single seat modification...or maybe a UCAV
-
All three of those sound good. For the single-seat version, have the pilot where the backseat pilot is now and fit the new nose with a radome, suitable radar, and "black boxes".

Finally

<...> or perhaps a single seat modification... <...>
Hmmm.....

Yak-130 single-seater concepts (https://flic.kr/p/DhYoRq) by Motschke (https://www.flickr.com/photos/151156765@N03/), on Flickr
I think I like the original one best. While I'm not so sure about the Hawk 200, I think making the previous back-seater the driver works here.
And a Yak-130G (G for "gak" - "hook", as on the Su-25UTG) is a splendid idea.

A single engine variant?
Nice!

I found this image in a review of the Kittyhawk 1/48th scale Yakovlev Yak-130 'Mitten'. I'm sometimes an after market person as I build in 1/72 but as you get into 1/48 and larger scales, you would think the manufacturer would spend some extra resources on items like the very visible cockpit.

Just read the write up on the Mirage 2000 N/D kit and the info on the aircraft was interesting:
"The two-seat Dassault Mirage 2000 D/N
The Dassault Mirage 2000 D/N is much more than the French answer to the American F-16 Fighting Falcon. Prized for its low-cost and ease of maintenance, this delta-wing tactical bomber is the most heavily exported European combat aircraft around the world. Faster than the F-16, with a steeper rate of climb and much longer range, the Mirage was designed from the ground up for its bomber role. The Dassault Mirage’s tough and rugged frame helps it excel at extremely low-altitude close air support and high-speed deep penetration strikes into contested airspace."
Interesting, is it factual? I always assumed the F-16 was the pretty much the standard against other multirole fighters were judged, does the 2000D really out perform it?
-
Unless one sets them equal in terms of payload etc such comparisons are pretty useless. Besides, it's one thing to do an on-paper comparison around speed, range etc but in the real world that's not necessarily what counts. Finally, the comment "designed from the ground up for its bomber role" is a pretty far stretch.
-
whoa, 32nd.. that'll be largish.

KH50010 HH-60H "Rescue Hawk"

Just read on the What-If Forum, that there's a post on FB that says Kitty Hawk and Panda Hobbies are closing down.

This are some real snarly and heated debates on Facebook about the quality of the kits. And the quality control and difficulty of construction. The choice of their subjects is not in question.
Some individuals are venting their frustration on the difficulty of building them.
Disclaimer: I have not purchased or built one.
-
I've got their 1/48 F-35B in the stash, it looks like they just copied the Italeri 1/72 kit, grossly raised panel tape lines and all. The canopy is going to be particularly difficult to correct, they moulded in the support frame to the inside of it which means you have to paint the 'outside' of the canopy to hide it.
