Not necessarily for starships, but pretty cool nonetheless: Defiance Games' German Panzergrenadier (for their game Alien War, set in 2260)

Some more.  Although not exactly starship ones, they are still close:

Assuming robotics is advanced enough, why would sentient beings risk their corporeal selfs in such a dangerous past time as direct combat?

I see in the future not human infantry but literally hordes of droids.  They would range in size from insects upwards.  The small ones would try and get inside the big ones to disable them and the bigger ones would be accompanied by their own hordes of escorts, attempting to prevent it.

Large droids may mimic humanoid forms but I wonder if it would be worth it, when there would be much more efficient and deadly forms available.

I honestly cannot see Lieutenant Rico going down into a bug nest when he can send a zillion droids of his own to combat the zillion bugs he's told breathlessly about by his subordinate.  ;)

Or got "burned" by Skynet.  Either would definitely put me off using too many autonomous automated systems.

Or you want to keep a red-blooded human in the loop to keep the replicant cannon fodder from revolting?

In sections of Ken Macleod's Fall Revolution tetralogy the US/UN military make use of what he calls 'tele-troopers', basically remotely piloted unmanned fighting suits.
'Boots on the ground' without risking precious Yank-Anglo ruling class blood.  ;)

An interesting series of book on Kindle, the Invasion USA series by Vaughn Heppner where the synopsis is, the year is 2040 and after massive climate change there is a global food shortage and China invades the USA bit by bit (you extend the book series that way) to take over the food production areas.  They are later joined by, one of the other world blocs, the German Federation, which is basically Western Europe to invade Canada and Eastern USA. The Germans Federation forces use mostly drones (land and air) and some new Robotic tanks with very basic Artificial Intelligence. this all goes well until one of the AI tanks becomes sentient and refuses to fight due to self preservation and being interlinked, other Tanks start to stand down as well taking attached drone forces with them.

Anyhooo, the point here is the the German Federation used more mechs than human troops and once that advantage of mech/drones was neutralised their fighting ability plummeted.

Sounds rather like the starting situation of G. Harry Stine's Warbots series where in it turned out to be advantageous to have warm-bodied "boots on the ground" in addition to a tele-presence.  Good reads, as with all his books (including those published under the "Lee Correy" nom-de-plume).

This discussion reminds me of the old game Total Annihilation.

The back story was, once scientists worked out how to achieve immortality through uploading human consciousness into computers, the government legislated that everyone had to do so, creating a new immortal race.  Anyway many rebelled against this starting a civil war across the galaxy, those who were uploaded were called the Core and those who opposed, the Arm (presumably because they still had limbs).  Over thousands of years they almost exhausted the resources throughout the galaxy with the Core evolving into little more than specialised AIs while the Arm, to make up for loses resorted to cloning and genetic engineering leaving them human in appearance alone.

Dodgy old graphics but everything from armoured battle suits through vehicles, droids, drones, aircraft, ships, weapon emplacements ands lots of buildings of different types.

Sounds similar to this scene from Surrogates:

Though. why someone would still want faces etc on your fighting robot…

Personally, I would make them as mean and terrifying as possible to the enemy.  Though I suppose one might the argument that if you somehow 'humanise' them it might make the enemy more reluctant to destroy them.  Who knows...

Now, I'm not saying that there are four eyed aliens already serving in armed forces or that there are genetically engineered super soldiers out there, but this was seen at the recent DSEI Trade Show in London...

After scouring the internet for weeks, I am going to share what is in my opinion some of the best, and in many cases numerous examples of futuristic grunts:

I will post the links and a few samples over the next few posts:

You can get this one in 1/35 from a German resin outfit: LINK! (http://www.modernarmies-in-miniatures.de/post-apocalyptic-cyborg-1-35_maim-brmodern-armies-in-miniatures_maim35260.html) And a colleague (LINK! Looks like they switched the weapon for a P90, though. The weapon in the original would look soooo much better as a bullpup design.
Got both figures. Pretty decent!  :) I intend to swap the "head" on the second one for a proper female head, though.
