Title: Random Diorama Ideas
Post by: GTX_Admin on April 26, 2015, 04:34:47 AM
Hi folks,

A thread for those images or ideas you have that might inspire a diorama.

To begin with, here is one I stumbled across:

I have this image of a island resort with the Mitsubishi F1Ms ("Pete"s) being used as tourist planes in some bright colour schemes.

Had this idea whilst looking at the fancies and glitters in Hobbycraft. Probably never get around to it though.

A biplane floatplane is sitting on the water next to a beach. The plane has a radically modified sci-fi engine complete with glowing green crystals, and it's prop is semi-melted. The beach is literally jewels and glitter, which extend below the water, and at the back of the beach are cartoon-like trees in impossible primary colours. A Preiser mermaid is sitting on one float of the plane, waving at the back-seater, while a Preiser fairy is sitting on the top wing, causing the pilot to drag his leather flying helmet off in amazement. There's a title card on the base that reads:

"It became apparent that the modified engine had done more than make them go faster...."

this would make a nice dio -- interesting museum display of an early Caproni monoplane ... anyone know where it is & the story behind the plane ?  Looks like it may have been found intact in the desert ?

That is the Caproni Ca.20, one of the first purpose built fighter aircraft.  Built in 1914, only a single example was ever built.  The prototype was stored in a barn on Giovanni Battista Caproni's property for 85 years, before being sold to the Museum of Flight in Seattle in 1999 which is where that was taken.  It is displayed in almost its entirely original condition. Here is another photo:

Take some futuristic spacecraft or other vehicle and have it being restored in a museum when it's so old it's "quaint". I have it in mind to do this with an Angel Interceptor one day, with a little old lady dressed all in white saying "I used to fly one just like that" to her bored grandkids....

File under "just because the Squadron commander sails into a cliff doesn't mean you have to / always pays to do your own navigation updates".

Considering recent USN incidents, looks like that learning curve needs to be scaled again.

The Revell Campbelltown kits seem to have dried up.

I thought ^THAT^ image was already a diorama or photoshop, but it dates from 2015 when the Russian army went to Shumshu island, the most northern of the Kuril Islands. They were looking for the remains of Russian and Japanese soldiers from WWII. Lots of rusty old war remains (https://www.google.com/search?q=Shumshu+Island&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjb3_rQuProAhVQu54KHY87BRoQ_AUoAnoECBoQBA&biw=2284&bih=1147)

The image search for Shumshu looks like one giant "random diorama ideas" gallery.  :icon_surprised:

Rusty tank + whale skeleton in one dio? Would have people guessing. Could either be real world, with the two things unrelated and just by coincidence in the same area. Could be a fantasy setting with people having fought giant monsters. Recently saw a build in a modelling magazine ("Damaged", issue ??? 5? 6?) that had a small excavator in 1/32 with the skeleton of a "giant" (actually 1/6 human skeleton).

EDIT: It was issue 6 of "Damaged Magazine".

Can recommend "Damaged". Mostly off the beaten path as far as modelling magazines go. Lots of abandoned stuff, figures, dioramas, sci-fi and fantasy,  kitbashes, civilian things, steampunk stuff.....

Pretty sure, yes, because they also said the island now belonged to Yemen, while actually closer to Somalia.

The German wikipedia article on Socotra (LINK! (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokotra)) claims the Soviets based "two squadrons of Sukhoi fighter-bombers" there in the 1980s. Source is a DER SPIEGEL article, which talks about "Suchoi-28" bombers. Su-28 is assigned to an unarmed version of the Su-25 Frogfoot fighter-bomber.

Thought for a variation:  USMC M113 pulling a damaged EP-3E in some odd locale.

Hmmm, maybe someone out there has an Italeri 1/32 F-104 they've built with wingtip rails. Now what to do with those surplus tip tanks?  ;D

Airfix does a 1/32nd VW Beetle in its Quickbuild and Starter Set ranges. Not sure what year Airfix is portraying but the one at Canadair is a pre-'64 model (note Wolfsburg crest near hood latch). The Airfix model would need North American 'over-rider' bumper bars, that hood crest, and vintage 1964 Québec license plates added.

As many as 140 sorties a day were launched from the carrier in the early days of the Korean War. on 31 August 1950 the two carriers launched 263 sorties to prevent the North Koreans from overrunning Pusan Perimeter Flexed biceps. the other carrier was the USS Valley Forge. A giant in the Korean conflict.  Also note the more heavily laden Skyraiders on the port edge of the deck.

Very often linked images don't show up for me. But I've just realized that, if I hit 'Quote', the image url become visible ... and I can swipe-copy-paste it.

Helpful hint? Or, am I the last person on the planet to figure this trick out?  ;D

Eight Lancasters is fine. It's the 1,000 sq ft of model railroading HO grass mats that's gonna be the killer. Could probably buy an actual airfield for that sum.

Sunderland and Catalina flying boats of RAF Coastal Command at Castle Archdale in Northern Ireland, January 1945. Nearly all the aircraft on strength with three Coastal Command squadrons are visible here, drawn up out of the water at Castle Archdale in Northern Ireland as Logh Erne froze over in January 1945.

More than 30 aircraft can be seen, including Sunderland's of No. 201 Squadron, and No. 423 Squadron RCAF, and No. 202 Squadron's Catalinas.

That'd be a good 1/350 or 1/700 diorama ... unless you're stinkin' filthy rich & have lots of time on your hands, in which case you could attempt it in 1/48*! ;)

You know when you find that picture that screams diorama. Stress testing the prototype Bailey Bridge. How to do it in 1942 ? Drive tanks onto it. Then tank on top of tank 8)

You know it just had to be done. Finally, I have all the bits, except the Mk V** Engineering tank that are available as kits in 1/35. Bronco Bailey Bridge,Bronco A10 and IMA Valentine Bridgelayer.
So I have sprung into action here is the current status, component parts as a test

Scratchwork on the Mk V** Tank. Based on the Takom Mk V female

I finally understand what Vallejo means by "wet on wet" painting - which is apparently not the same as what I understood as "wet on wet" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wet-on-wet)

It would have saved me a lot of frustration with their paint if they'd used a different terminology. He paints Vallejo on a previously wetted (with water) surface to paint this Humvee:

1/720 or 1/350 scale?

By the end of WWII, American industrial might and the need to fight on two fronts resulted in the U.S. Navy having a greater tonnage of combatant ships than all other navies combined. In 1947, the U.S. had 3,820,000 tons versus the world's combined 2,860,000 tons.

Looking at that picture again, and particularly at the trailer's wheels, they look to be British. So, the question is, has the fighter been captured by the British and being taken away, or salvaged by the Luftwaffe who just happen to be using a captured British trailer . . .

Doing some reverse image search, seems to be "6th squadron of the Jagdgeschwader 27 air regiment, piloted by Lieutenant Gerhard Mix. Western Desert, Egypt, August 14, 1942. Shot down by Spitfires of 92 Squadron near El Alamein, claimed by Sqn Ldr Wedgwood".

Considering the recent post-apocalyptic topics, this would make a good base.

The Apotheosis of War is a mid 19th century painting by Russian war artist Vasily Vereshchagin. Following his completion of the painting, Vereshchagin dedicated his work "to all great conquerors, past, present and to come".

Nuffin wrong with Neanderthal DNA, its the reason those of European decent survive pandemics better than the only true humans, the sub-Saharan Africans, we are interbred mongrels.  In fact it has been determined that all medicines and treatments should actually be tailored for Kalahari Bushmen as they are the closest living remnant of the original homosapien and as such any treatments that work for them will work for everyone else.  Sort of flips the white supremacist's view on racial purity.

Not upset by the knowledge that I have Homo Neanderthalensis genes in the slightest.

Nor do I accept that the heavy brow ridge & highly sloped forehead actually indicate low intelligence (it absolutely has no bearing, whatsoever).

What does ... niggle ... is that it was claims like this that Hitler & the Nazis used to claim that Slavs (Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Yugoslavs, Ukrainians, Russians) were sub-human, ignoring the fact that the incidence of heavy brow ridges & highly sloped foreheads is actually relatively rare, occurs almost equally in all Euro/Scandinavian "ethnic" groups & has, as said above, zero indication of the actual intelligence of the person with these features.

What rankles is that American scientists used this type of phrenological myth as part of their anti-Soviet propaganda for a while post-WW2 & it seems to have stuck as an instinctive, thoughtless cliche in the minds of otherwise really nice people.

 :icon_surprised:

Phew! OK, rant over.

Sorry Guy - This guy has brow ridges because he has acromegaly, among other issues.

Nothing wrong about Neanderthals, either. According to two DNA tests, I have more 'thal ancestry than most people. And no brow ridges.

Looking at that picture again, and particularly at the trailer's wheels, they look to be British. So, the question is, has the fighter been captured by the British and being taken away, or salvaged by the Luftwaffe who just happen to be using a captured British trailer . . .

I think you are right, Robin. That recovery trailer looks like the two-wheeled Tasker 33-footer (kind of a little brother to the 'Queen Mary'. I believe that there is only one kit of that trailer - in 1/35 by Wespe Models, which comes with a Commer Q2 15 cwt tractor. But reviews of that Romanian kit are rather dire!

The aircraft is another limiting factor. Pend Oreille did a resin Messerschmit in 1/35th 20+ years ago. But that was a Bf 109G-6. AFAIK, there's no 1/35 kit of an 'F model Messerschmitt. So, this diorama trailer would probably be a scratch job in another scale.

For the tractor, options would be Commer, Albion, or (maybe?) Bedford. Flightpath UK does a Commer airfield lorry (FHP72213). But the Albion AM463 refueller might be a better starting point (Airfix 1/48 or Matador 1/72).

Anyone really good with cutting jigs and Plastruct angles?  ;D

Well, La Combattante was a British Hunt-class destroyer & IBG Models makes 6 vessels of the class in 1/700 (3 Polish, 3 British; only one available at the moment, though):

This C-47 (serial number 42-100862) was one of nineteen Skytrains shot down by the Flak of the Führer Begleit Brigade west of Bastogne on 27 December 1944. The aircraft in the picture was from the 94th Troop Carrier Squadron, 439th Troop Carrier Group, and was baptized ‘Aint Missbehavin’ by the crew. Photo taken on 30 December 1944.

The pilot, Captain Ernie Turner of the C-47 cargo transport crash landed safely after having dropped supplies to elements of the 101st Airborne Division which had successfully repulsed all attempts to capture the besieged city of Bastogne, Belgium.
Captain Ernie Turner, with Lieutenant Keistutis J. ‘Casey’ Narbutas as co-pilot, Staff Sergeant Richard G. Whitehurst as radio operator, and Staff Sergeant John E. Douglas as the crew commander escaped unharmed from the emergency landing at Savy northwest of Bastogne, behind the American lines.

Don't know the make but it looks like it could be made with a cut down Canadian Chevrolet truck cab & chassis.

Wouldn't be surprised if it either was made that way or was made by Chevrolet Canada.

That's either a very good model or a photoshop.

There was only one prototype (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_P.1101) and this picture from Wikipedia shows it in pretty good shape. It was in fairly good condition - but not flyable - when it arrived at Bell.

I think you'll find that the first photo is how & where it was originally located, Frank, or where it was moved to before the recovery boffins got to it (after the GI's had relieved it of various souvenirs?):

Imperial Japanese Army soldiers make banzai cheers on the seized BT tanks of Soviet-Mongolia forces during the battle of Khalkhin Gol in July 13, 1939 near Hulun Buir, Inner Mongolia, China. The battle of Khalkhin Gol was the border conflict between Mongoria and Manchukuo, backed by the Soviet Union and the Imperial Japan respectively, between May 11 to September 16, 1939.

A memory from years ago, dredged up today due to something else.

I live in a trash-picking ripe area and one day, one of those hexagonal end table tops followed me home - both the wooden frame and the faux (cast?) marble top. The size was probably 12" per side or 20+" across.

My thought was that for wargamers, these would be swanky representing a single square from the game board in a much larger scale (so someone playing SQUAD LEADER could use microarmor and larger models).

When separated, either the wood frame or the 'marble' could also be an artistic diorama base.

Both items went away years ago, but I figured I'd share the potential for you motivated folks.

The late spring flowers blooming are a nice contrast.

I’m surprised that no one tries to gather these destroyed vehicles for scrap purposes. That’s pretty good steel. I the Ukrainians use the broken ones for parts but these are only good for junk now.

Ukraine is still at war, heavy recovery assets are still at a premium.

Remember, the French didn't start tidying up until late 1945 at the earilest.

This type of thing always hammers home to me just how cheap all this military hardware was after the war, when it was no longer needed.

The Vickers Mk. VI was  light tank... but I think it would be safer for the three guys pushing to pull instead.

The Bomber gas station is a real 'blast from the past'! Sorry to see her in such rough shape.

A gas-up and burger-stop at The Bomber was mandatory on childhood family road trips through Oregon (Dad always preferred 99E to the I-5).

PS - work by andrea ferrario, was originally on the 1/43rd scale car site tinycars.it (which is not a /s site)

Solves the problem of where to put it (wall hanging) but still leaves the dust issue.
