Clave profile based Spitfires
« on: May 28, 2018, 03:52:01 PM »
Hello all,

i kinda hope that Clave see's these and is not horrified, disgusted or any other negative verbed when he sees these.

i have voraciously devoured his profile thread on BTS and have earmarked a number of other profiles that must be built so hopefully as life and weather permits, they will appear here. on a side note, can i link to the profiles that were originally done? should it be to the forum post or the deviant art page or the claveworks graphics page?

these 2 spitfires caught my eye early on and with cheap academy 1/48 kits in hand, the temptation to practice airbrushing and paint techniques overwhelmed me.

of the jasta 76, i ordered some cheap bavarian check camo but didn't know if i could match the paint colour later so opted to mask and paint instead. pics below from this process. proud to say that as long as it took to do the masking, i had a several beers during it and so the time passed quite quickly while i got odd looks from wifey as to "why does the white plane need yellow tape on it?"

initial paint masking:

reapplying the masking for the second time:

peeling off the second round of masking:

finished product:

this didn't come out any where near as metallic in colour as the profile was, but the closest colours that were metallic i could get, were nail polishes. and i lost an airbrush (cheap and very cr*ppy) to them.

hope you enjoy!

Cheers all!

Mog, make it! Mine came out more dull red than the gorgeous metallic gloss like the profile. Thanks GTX for linking the profiles.

And indeed all hail the mighty clave! I hope he likes the 1/24th Airfix p51 in jasta 15 colours i have planned....

Hi Haemon

I tend to work in 1/72 scale so I could not possibly match your standard of paintwork,  the finish on both of those Spitfires is fantastic.

I may just still do it as you say,  but Fear not I have other ideas
