Cavalier Aircraft Turbo Mustang III
« on: March 29, 2015, 08:47:28 AM »
Ok now one from the vault though not so old, only from the middle of last year. As usual this is from a GB though this time a Single Type GB, I just can’t seem to help myself when it comes to GB’s, just wish I had more time for them. Anyway again I’m not one to build something usual/normal, I prefer something a little bit different and in this case it’s completely different!

This a one off aircraft but by Cavalier as a possible COIN aircraft for the US military and foreign operators, the venerable P-51 Mustang with a Royals Royce Dart engine fitted! Unfortunately it didn’t attract any interest and when the company finally closed in 71 the license for this aircraft was sold to Piper who went on to develop the Piper Enforcer.

The conversion kit is quite simple though it does have a few minor issues with fit, northing too hard to resolve though.

The end result is an amazing and unique variation of the Mustang, the conversion kit when last I looked was still available in 1/72 and 1/48 version. Someone did do a one-off 1/24th conversion using an Airfix kit s the base!!!

Kit and scale:  1/48 Tamiya F-51D

Conversion Kit:  Heritage Aviation Models 1/48 Cavalier Turbo Mustang III

Paint: Gunze Aqueous & Tamiya Acrylics, Model Master Enamels & Metalizer Lacquers.

Extra stuff: Aero Bonus resin weapons, True Details SUU-1A/A Minigun Pods plus extras from the spares box.

Beautiful work.  I can't help but wonder how that same conversion would look on a P-51B airframe - or really get crazy and mix in an early Mustang wing with the 20mm cannon, only replace the Hispano cannon with post-war 20mm Browning cannon such as fitted to the F-100 et al.

I always enjoy anything I come across regarding the Turbo Mustang or Enforcer, so it's a real treat to see one built up in the flesh here on BTS!

It looks like it takes some serious skill to make that conversion appear so flawless. The paint and subtle weathering work especially well and make this beauty all that much more realistic!

A real show stopper all the way 'round!

Definitely a nice conversion that resulted from your skilled hands.

Wonderful build.  :)

Has anyone build a 1/72 version with the Heritage conversion kit?

I am giving up listing them. They all end up on the shelf of procrastination anyways.

Yes.  In fact, I used two when I created my F-82T Twin-Turbo-Mustang :

Why?  How many models of the Spitfire are there out there?  Just do yours in different markings!   ;)
