In recent news...
« on: April 02, 2013, 07:51:41 PM »
...I've been working on some RW stuff for GBs elsewhere.

The first one finished was this 1/144 Braniff International B727 in the pink "Jellybean" scheme, used the Airfix kit (augh) and decals from Draw Decal; the colour is Model Master "Panther Pink", which was the closest I could find to the pinkish-looking red found on the original. It was a *lot* of work getting this one done, and I'm reasonably happy with the result.

The second one I just finished yesterday - a Mustang Mk. IV of 442 "City of Vancouver" Sqn RCAF, 1/72 Tamiya kit (what a dream to build!) with Arrow Graphics decals:

Finished, but I don't (yet) have pics of it, is an RN Sea Vixen. That's such a pretty plane!

Also in progress right now for various GBs is a Vampire Mk. III (also RCAF 442 Sqn), a Phantom FGR.2 (23 Sqn RAF Stanley) and an RAAF F-4E; I'll post pics of these when they're done. Well, there's also an unfinished Boeing 247 that needs to be taken apart, well, it's languishing right now because trying to take it apart without breaking it is a daunting task.

Those are some magnificent models, Ms Litvyak!

I always call airline schemes "deceptively simple" as getting them to look so polished can be quite challenging.
Your Braniff 727 is very crisp indeed!

That Mustang certainly proves that few things spice up an aircraft like maple leaves!

Excellent work all the way 'round!

WHAT???!!!  How dare you!  There is only one site!!!!!!!  ;D

A pink airliner huh?  Least you used Panther Pink  ;)  Not too big on pink birds but yours look great.  Maple leaves really do suit P-51s, nice one  8)

On a technical note, what kind of tape are you using as it's not appearing to leave the sharpest of edges.  I ask because I want to help not insult so please don't get the wrong idea.

You know there is no reason why RW stuff can't be entered into GBs here...

That model gave me new respect for those who build airliners! It *looks* easy, as you say, but it seemed to take so much more work to make it look presentable. (Though part of that may have been due to the Airfix 727 being a pretty rough kit... but painting it, yeah, that was a lot of work).

Eh, it's a site I've been around at longer than whiff forums, so.

Yeah, a pink airliner! If/when I ever get my CEF-108 finished, that will also be in pink (though much lighter, a recce pink). I have an odd relationship with that colour. I'd never wear it, but pink on unexpected things is pretty awesome - airplanes, tanks, etc... :D

And /anything/ looks good with Leafy roundels (or Roo roundels or Kiwi roundels...)

Masking tape (yeah, yknow, the plain off-white stuff). Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I still haven't really figured it out; see my currently-in-progress RAAF F-4E:

Okay I'll keep that in mind for future GBs! :)

Try Tamiya tape - I've used a few different "DIY" masking tapes and they've had wildly different characteristics, mostly unhelpful. Tamiya tape though, is the mutt's nuts.

1. Try burnishing the edges down with a rounded tool. There are various sculpting tools that will do the job, but you can often improvise with the wrong end of a paintbrush, if it's suitably rounded and a has a coat of smooth, glossy varnish on it.

2. After masking a difficult area, make your first coat of spray paint the colour that's under the masking: that way, all the runs and creeps are the right colour, and the gaps they ran and seeped through have been sealed to prevent the next, contrasting coat from doing the same.

Thanks Weaver - not sure why I didn't think of #2 there, given that on the Phantom posted there I did have the presence of mind to paint the edges of the tape with a clear coat

Great job on the planes ... !!!

My solution for tape is use the cheapest masking tape I can find. Usually has the lowest tac ,which is good. I put a strip on my "glass" work surface and using a metal straight edge,I cut a clean crisp edge for my masking line. Just make sure you rub it down ,gently, for a good seal. That is all there is to it. The edges of tape right off the roll isn't a clean crisp edge.
