Is that Firefly U8 a whif ???
According to the official FAA website the U8s were converted AS Mk4s - I doubt they'd change the engine or back-seater's areas.  U9s were ex-AS Mk5s.

Think "Shackfly" would be a better name for post-WW2 versions.

I have seen references (such as "Fairey Aircraft since 1915" by H.A. Taylor) that the U.8 was a conversion of the A.S.7/T.7.  This is what is represented with this kit I believe.

Also see photo below:

Tried it ---  nacelle is too big for a Spit ---- F-82 is another thing  ;)  (nearside nacelle in this pic below)  The nacelle happens to fit a Tempest quite well though, or the Martin Baker MB5 ---

It would appear that the U8s were AS.4s with the new engine, tall fin & bubble over the rear cockpit.

The U-9 Drones were standard ex-AS.5s - only external mods were the small wingtip pods.

If putting that bearded engine on a Spitty you would need to enlarge the fin too .... but what Mark of Spit would you start with ??, surely not a Mk.Vb.

If you have an old Frog[spawn] Shackleton, you could try the match-up but it doesn't fit very well (already tried that too). I would use a Mk.21 or 22 or even a Spiteful, then you could just use some Attacker wings (no radiators on them) ----- the problem with using a Spitfire is it's just too small an airframe, for instance, compare a Sea Fury with a Spitfire and see what difference there is, then have a look at this pic, the engine/cowling package on the Firefly is the same power egg

Errr...no.  The more I look into this, it does appear that the U.8s were converted AS.7s.  And in fact, multiple sources confirm that 34 Mark 7s were actually built new as U8s.

The distinguishing features being the radiator (moved from wing to chin), canopies and tail, all of which are identical to the AS.7.  It would make absolutely no sense to retrofit the AS.4/5 so intensively for use as a target.

Latest email special from Rob Stevens @ West Coast Hobbys:

We have Special Hobby kits SH48158 and SH48135 Grumman Guardians on sale @ $39.00 Canadian until Sunday Oct 25th. These kits WILL NOT be going to the SALE section of the site at that time.

For our US subscribers, the kits make a fixed rate postage of $16.23 anywhere in the US. Remember, a request for quote dosen't cost you anything ! .. A nice kit but BIG and takes up a lot of much needed shelf space for new issues. Good deal for the US members.

Cheers  Rob

Which manufacturer are you asking about.  Special Hobby's Spitfire Mk.21 has both props in it:

Just got my box out ( the 91 Sqd in WWII boxing) to confirm and the answer is "yes they do". You get 5 blades + spinner etc for the options in the box and then 6 blades + spinner etc as unused parts.

I like the way you think.  I wonder what they would do when DB605s no longer were available?  A Merlin installation or a Griffon?

If I'm honest I'm kinda concerned the spinner's shown as one part given it's a contraprop...

Indeed! Perhaps they based their artwork on the replica as a work-in-progress?

On the real deal, that gap between spinner sections is pretty noticeable too. Also, on the preserved example, the front spinner isn't pointed ... the tip is clipped off for a cooling opening.

Someone on Britmodeller suggested SH has used the replica - which literally crashed and burned five years ago - as the basis for this kit rather than the extant original, which makes very little sense to me.

OFFS it's a CAD render, it doesn't mean a damned thing. Renders are created from the engineering
model datasets and what the render shows is determined by which models you choose to show or
hide.

Seeing that makes me wonder what a Beaufighter would look like with R/R Griffons.  For that matter, how about the same treatment for a Mosquito?

I've been working out what I can do for that, may use a Firefly Mk.I cowling.  I've read that the Beaufighter had a yaw problem which was amplified when Merlins were installed. Can't think what the Griffons would have done to it ----

@Robert - I was imagining the Griffons with the contra-rotating propellers as used on the Shackleton.  Perhaps that would also take care of the yaw issues?

I was thinking along the same lines Jeff, but also maybe twin tails and a slightly lengthened rear fuselage too ----

Unfortunately, there's not too many photos of the prototype, the one Robin posted and the one I did being about it. What I've read is that Bristol trialed two different cowlings at the same time as you can see in the pic Robin posted, the port one is interesting though. It looks like the exhaust was covered and channeled over the top of the wing.

From the thread I linked to . . .   ;)

'Paraphrased from “Hucknall — the Rolls-Royce Flight Test Establishment” by David Birch page 132:The right engine had typical ejector exhaust stacks. The left engine had six-into-one exhaust manifolds hidden beneath the cowling and routed to exit above the wing. The manifolds were cooled by air that had passed through the radiator. When the radiator side exits were closed, the only air exit would be that around the manifolds above the wing. The configuration was intended to improved streamlining and provide flame dampening. However, the exhaust manifolds were not structurally reliable and frequent repairs were needed.'

cheers,
Robin.

So I surmised right then --- thanks Robin.  Serves me right for just looking at the pretty picture then  ;) ;) ;)

I think there might have been another reason too, the cockpit is directly exposed to the open exhaust stubs on the right nacelle, I'd imaging the pilot would be totally deaf after a short flight like that.

EDIT: I tried to print the drawings on that link, virtually impossible to read the text.

That is a subject that has been long overdue to be offered in 1/48th scale.  Not that I am going to rush out and acquire a quartet of the things but yeah, for as much action as the real aircraft had in IDF service you would have expected to see something in 1/48th scale long before this.  Now if Special Hobby would only consider a 1/48th scale North American AJ Savage, after all they did step up and give us all the flavours of the Grumman AF Guardian in 1/48th scale...
