For a novel with some inspirational ideas, A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah!" by Harry Harrison has some interesting ideas (for ex. a rather large eight-engined coal-burning gas turbine flying boat). Some fun concepts to play with.

How about still born concepts or evolutions of such, i.e initial missile ship ideas that ended up very different when they eventually arrived, or concepts that were killed by changing technology, treaties and or real experience demonstrating a better way, i.e. cruiser and battleship carriers. Large cruisers / battlecruisers carrying not just aircraft but motor torpedo boats, post WWII Cruiser/Destroyers, or the station cruiser replacing station carrier for empire security and trade protection. Maybe aircraft concepts of what was thought was going to happen but didn't, i.e. the BP ads in aviation magazines from the 60s showing civilian inflight refuelling tankers refuelling concords in flight. Another idea is the land marines concept from WWI, i.e. armoured infantry that was assumed would evolve along side tanks but didn't happen until much latter.

I think those are all really good and acceptable ideas. Ive been thinking about this a lot and even consulting with others on the sight, and I think about the only real "limit" on this GB is the notion of time and eras.
So for example put yourself in the shows of a World War II aircraft designer and he thinks about how an airplane would look in 20 years. You can't really be "wrong" . its just an educated guess on what his educated guess would be. Your example using ships is a good one. in the mid 1930s someone would probably be guessing the battleship is still the king and would be for the next 20 years, only getting larger and more powerful, rather than going nearly completely out of business.
And I think original ("pre evolved") concepts are a big part of that so definitely acceptable. I guess you have to kind of have the knowledge of styles and trends and features from different eras. If you are going to build a World War II F-18 hornet, it would probably have rounded wing tips for example, wing cannons, ordnance from the era, etc. Again you can't really be wrong I'd like to see lots of details to really back date it, but that's up the creator/builder/engineer and what they note and decide to emphasize.
On that note, its ok to take a subject and transfer it BACKWARD:

in this case you have a modern subject (the super hornet not the Prowler! ;D) going "retro" with its paint. As opposed to an official 1940s design:

I mean look at that JU-287! Streamlined, jet engines, Forward swept wings, and SPATS!? (I know that wasn't the intended design, but its a great look at the "original" prototype as mentioned above.)
So to break it down really simply, In this GB you are basically either backdating a modern design or taking an older design and modernizing it, or taking an image or idea from the time about the future and replicating it.

I bought that one and it's a fascinating read. I really need to see if there are equivalent books on the work of Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfuss.

I have all three you have mentioned, I also now have Raymond Loewy, Pioneer of American Industrial Design and Design Heroes; Raymond Loewy. I should also note from experience that Never Leave Well Enough Alone! was also published as Raymond Loewy and Streamlined Design as I now have a copy of each title.

I found it interesting that one locomotive whose styling he scorned in that book, Locomotive, was one of the very early EMD E-units supplied to the ATSF for the Super Chief; the box design depicted had the cab raised and then the whole body redesigned and styled for the production E-units and the sibling F-units. It would appear that many agreed, for various reasons, with his criticism of that initial take.

Speaking of trains, there's always GM's 1947 Passenger Train of Tomorrow which introduced dome passenger cars in a major way (though the CB&Q, privy to the thoughts that inspired these cars, introduced the first dome cars).

"Super car" (also named "Superbus") Pathé Marconi.
It was a mobile recording studio, audio equipement exhibition, lounge, and there was even a stage on the roof for musical performance. France 1952 (retired in 1959)
It takes place now in Mulhouse train museum (because of it size).

They've been looking at similar designs over the last 30 years in an attempt to make semi's (semi-trailers/articulated trucks/etc.) more fuel efficient, especially on long hauls, but don't seem to have gotten anywhere.

Elon Musk / Tesla will on November 16 introduce the all-electric Semi-Tractor. Nice streamline design as there is no requirement for engine air or cooling infrastructure.

Electric engines (and sometimes, batteries) do need cooling - its usually passive cooling or if active liquid cooling is required, the radiators are much smaller.

I remember a futuristic tractor-trailer combo that appeared in Car Model back in the late 1960's, the tractor was a much reworked Silouette trailer with the turbine engine from Revell's parts packs and the trailer was scratchbuilt.

What's happening between the tractor and trailer on that Yacht? Looks like smooth metal, but I'm sure it's just an over enthusiastic illustrator. It has to be something like the accordion bellows you see on some long busses or trolley cars.

In fact it's just a gap. But the end of the trailer is rounded and can turn. The end piece of the truck is empty space where the rounded front of the trailer moves.

What's happening between the tractor and trailer on that Yacht? Looks like smooth metal, but I'm sure it's just an over enthusiastic illustrator. It has to be something like the accordion bellows you see on some long busses or trolley cars.
Or the bellows sections between vestibules of railway passenger cars. Orange County, CA had some trailer buses hauled by tractors and I always thought that a cab with camper connected to the trailer by such a bellows would make the basis for a great super-sized RV.

I think you've got it. I took a look at other photos after I asked the question and that was the other possibility that occurred to me. Bit of a waste of space, if ya ask me, but they didn't! :-)
