BAC High Lightning - Done!
« on: March 20, 2020, 05:05:27 PM »
This is how it all starts.
Firstly I am doing the Sci Fi GB using a 1/48 SAAB Viggen, I also need detail parts, so I fossick out an old Matchbox Lightning for some bits, mainly the tanks, as the wings have been used for something else somewhere.
Then throw the rest to the side to do some more work on the Sci Fi ship.

Then I look over and see this.

So that then starts the brainbox ticking and all of a sudden you end up here

I figure it could be a high altitude Lightning variant, improved engine, blah, blah, ok there is the fuel issue but plenty of wing area now for fuel.
Thoughts ?

Juggling projects.. Hopeless at that as well.

The High Lightning has had a move along, if only to get it off the bench for other stuff.
Not much new, just fleshed out the lower surfaces, with undercarriage location.. yes I went the soft option, Wheels Up

I figure this layout could also double the offensive weaponry, so I am going 4 x Redtops, with a bit of will I, wont I on putting 2 x Sidewinders on the outboard pylons as a lightweight self defence option.
Next step is the finish, again my I am fighting my inner Whiffer brain which is shouting...Natural Metal Finish...very, very loudly.

Lets call this done. Construction is a bit average, but for a relatively quick build, all in all, it achieved the aim
Photos are a bit ordinary too, could not get the oomph to get the full photo rig out.

So, all rails full and into the blue

Yes.. it has Sidewinders, probably could have put 2 more Redtops on, but that would be greedy

The Matchbox Lightning really is showing its age with all those raised lines. Sanding and rescribing were beyond the scope of this build ;)
Changed the pitot tube for something from an F-16 I think for a bit more pizzaz. The Pilot is a bit of a Tom Cruise dwarf version as well now I look at it.
Decals are spares from an new release Airfix F6 and really nice. Somehow a lot of the stencils did not go on. Oh well, perhaps more lethargy.... err out of scope.
Paint is the local SMS range, 3 of the metallics colours. Really nice to use, fully ready to go directly into the airbrush, dry quickly being an acrylic laquer, which makes it easier to do multiple tones.

I like the different shades of natural metal finish which really highlights that excellent delta wing.

Very well done and quite eye-catching!

The lightning wing was often referred to as a 'notched delta', so it's almost a natural. I've seen others, and yours is right up there with the best!
