Wing Commander, Starlancer/Freelancer, and Star Citizen

Homepage here.

The game is still in development and will likely remain so for a long time to come, but since it involves Chris Roberts of the Wing Commander fame and is developed for PC, there seems to be a lot of interests in where it will go.

In any case, there are some very good-looking (if a bit rough in some places due to the game being in early development) designs in the materials that are available to the public.  Here are a few of 'em:

Anvil Aerospace Super Hornet, a privateer ship developed from the standard carrier fighter of Earth's military.  This particular variant is said to be as close to the military variant as being "civilian-legal" will allow but has a factory-installed hyperspace or "jump" drive and a seat for a second crewmember, which the military ship (and the more-economical baseline models) lacks.

Origin Jumpworks 325a, a combat-optimised version of 300i touring ship.  Comes out of the factory with a heavier gun armament (two laser cannons and a trainable mass driver), missile launchers (300i has only the two laser cannons as standard), and an optimised fire control system.

The 300i series (and quite possibly the Origin Jumpworks itself, other than being the BMW of the game universe) is a meta reference to the Wing Commander franchise.

Origin Jumpworks 350r, a racer/armed-courier version of the 300i.  Compared to the 300i, it is lighter, more weakly-armed (lower-powered laser cannons for armed courier roles), and powered by two main thrusters which, while smaller than the single main thruster of the rest of the 300i series, combine to provide a higher thrust-to-weight ratio than the other 300i series models.

Forget about his bow and arrows- why wait until that sparrow has done his deed when I can just bury him right now 'cause I'm sick and tired of hearing why he wants to have his way with the cock robin!?

Wing Commander III is actually the first game I played that is made under the leadership of Chris Roberts.

That is followed by Wing Commander IV and then chronologically-older Wing Commander: Armada.  And I love some of the Terran space fighters in those games:

Arrow light fighter first appeared in Armada.  Sterotypical hot rod interceptor and escort fighter with light armaments and protections.

Hellcat medium fighter is the standard Terran space fighter since III.  Jack of all trades and can be outfitted for photographic reconaissance missions in addition.

Excalibur heavy fighter is the ultimate Terran space fighter in III and continues to be part of Terran space navy's high-end offering in IV.

Bearcat heavy fighter is introduced as the next big thing for the Terran military in IV.  Compared to Excalibur, it features a slightly lighter armaments suite in exchange for better acceleration and manuverability.

Yeah, my usual favorite ship in FL is the Order Anubis, modified to live up to its infocard hype. I mean, really, supposed to be the combined best of ALL humanity's tech in one package and it ONLY gets 60% of the way up the tech ladder? Something's wrong there...

So I got into the XML code and how to edit the architecture INI files and the hardpoints on the ship model, and built THIS monster:

Something like 20 Class-10 guns, some of which could fire backward... goes through Rheinland Battleship like laser-scalpel through warm butter if you connect with everything at once, but the catch is that if you fail to get the kill on your opening salvo, you're a sitting duck until the reactor recharges.

Tried trading and the Anubus wasn't any good for that, kept running out of space, what I really needed was some sort of home base so I could have multiple ships.

Depends how you play--for trading you need a dedicated freighter, while I wanted to be able to vape anything I met in one shot.

Think the thing is, FL is more like an RPG in its reequipping, while Star Citizen looks like it's more "opened up" where you can be a single pilot or a "company administrator" for a small private fleet. Still not totally sold... I mean, it seems like an awful big chunk of change to outlay, and too "early World of Warcraft" where you have to buy your way to glory instead of earning your upgrades whether direct or spending game-earned credits on 'em to me.Don't get me wrong, the concept is impressive, and the GFX are gorgeous, but... well, I have reservations about a game where I can't buy-in for a flat $50 or less and nothing further to pay whether monthly access or having to buy my in-game gear separately. Maybe I'm just a relic of the old days of PC gaming though...

Three of the "Ship Commercials" for the game.  Personal spacecraft are the new cars in the game's universe:

Some more Star Citizen ship pictures:

Consolidated Outland Mustang Gamma

Mustang is a low-cost personal spaceship in Star Citizen universe.  Gamma is a "sports car" or racer variant.

Access to cockpit is via ladder to the cockpit's left.

Consolidated Outland Mustang Beta

Touring/Exploration variant of Mustang.  Position occupied by the central engine in the fuselage is replaced with a living quarter.  A chin turret is actually the baseline feature of the Mustang family except for racer variants...... because a sci-fi space sim wouldn't be complete without pirates.

Access to the interior has been relocated to below and behind the cockpit.

Living quarter.

Looking toward cockpit.

Anvil Aerospace F7C-R Hornet Tracker

Radar picket variant of the F7C Hornet personal spaceship.  Fuselage cargo pod is replaced with a radar and ELINT package.

Cockpit.

Anvil Aerospace F7C-M Super Hornet

Two-seater "civil-legal" version of the military F7A Hornet fighter.

Pilot's cockpit.

Sensor operator's cockpit.

Sensor operator also has access to the dorsal-mounted "ball turret".
