RAM's M4A2 Sherman
« on: November 08, 2019, 08:52:14 AM »
So, moving on from the F9F-8 Cougar into my preferred field of Armour, I'm going to build something I've never actually built before - a Sherman tank.

Seriously, in all of the years I've been modelling, I've never built an M4 Sherman of any variant. Closest I came was an M3 Grant, back when I was about 11 or 12.

Being me I've already made my first mistake; I trimmed off the casting numbers on the front left hull top next to the driver's hatch. :-[

Anyway, enough waffle, this is more a place-holder for when I get past the tedious bit of building the running gear & get into the build proper.

Catch you soon!

Oh, by the way, I'm using the Dragon 1/35 USMC M4A2 Late PTO (DR6462) variant as the base for this build which will be mostly OoB.

Below is a photo of the casting numbers I removed last night. ::)

Photo's have been rare for this build, I'm afraid, but only because I've been flat-out working on it.

Currently in the paint shop getting the base OD done.

Once I've done that I'll be putting more of the sub-assemblies together &, hopefully, fitting them for semi-final paint.

Then I'll be working on the clear bits (a lot of little ones for the periscopes, etc.).

Followed by final construction & paint.

Typical of a Dragon kit, this thing has far too many small, fiddly parts & didn't come with a .50 cal (the mount but no gun), so I've used an AFV Club item from a set of .50 cals (which also had too many small, fiddly parts but looks very good).

Thanks for watching! :icon_alabanza:

Look forward to seeing it.  Yep.  I remember the first m4 I built.  6 pieces for the drivers hatch

Right, running a bit behind on this build but I did promise photo's (for yesterday ::)). So, here they are, as of 5 minutes ago:

Grey stripes are "field applied by brush with paint acquired from the Navy". ;)

Nice camouflage!

"Acquired".   ;)

Maybe that's also the reason those casting numbers were ground out. "Acquired" paint on an "acquired" tank.  :P
Cheers,

Thanks, Moritz!

BT: It's a Pacific beach landing scheme with field applied "coconut palm log" pattern. If I ever get around to (any of) the diorama(s), it'll be in sandy soil surrounded bushes & coconut palms.

After a lengthy hiatus:

Photo's of the finished subject:

A M4A2 Sherman tank of 3Div, 58Bn, D Coy, RAMAR, depicted 1945, late in the Philippines Campaign.

Hope you like her!

As usual, I still have to do the base (there's going to come a time when I'll be building bases constantly for a year or more).

Constructive criticism welcomed (I know about the eyes, not quite as good as I wanted but not too bad).

For those interested in these things (someone asked elsewhere):

The figures come from these three MiniArt boxings with Hornet heads;

(2nd from left figure = commander)

(Far right figure = loader; lower left figure = driver)

(Central figure = (smoking) assistant driver / bow gunner)

Cheers! :icon_beer:

Very nice!  The kit grouser tracks would be just the thing for clawing through the mud during Luzon's wet season  ;)

Still loving that 'coconut palm log' camouflage (like the overhead palms are casting shadows)  ;)

On the crew figures, were those Hornet heads from the 'British Rimless AFV/Para Helmet' set?

Great show all around. I've never built a Sherman either, though I have mangled parts from a few. :D It is nice to see an M4 in varied cammo.   ( I keep looking at the loader figure and wondering why Elliot Gould is in the crew...)
