Yes indeed!  Very nice work and quite innovative on the markings as well.  Good to see you here at Beyond The Sprues!

Yes, good to have F/A-20N grab an arresting cable on BTS flight deck and bring you on board.  Being ex-naval air it looks like model of real one to me.  8)
Particularly like how two grays look on F/A-20N with black and yellow above and Navy markings.
Excellent builds all.  :)

Thank you guys  :D

Finsrin, you do not believe say so well. Many people who viewed this F/A-20N asked me if it exists. And what about the jury who noted it for his first and only contest (2nd place, just behind an USAF F-15E 1/32 :P)
Title: Re: Dams301 thread : the old build
Post by: finsrin on March 20, 2013, 05:00:02 AM
My point was it looks like model of a real one >>> though there is no real one.
Looks legitimate  :)

Yes, this is what I understood.
I think there was a mistranslation from me, sorry   :-[

Sometimes I use Google traduction for english translation from french and it's not always accurate ;D

1: The models are awesome in particular the US navy bird :)
2: Dont worry about your translation, Your english is still a lot better than my french ! ;)

And most importantly

3: We dont just deal with What-if's here... If you have more real world builds please share !! :)

Hi all,

Great advance over the past week: the aircraft was fully painted  :D

I can switch on the final details I managed to list:
- Modification of the 2nd MLG + paint all trains and Pitot (knowing that I finished my bomb Tam aluminum pot and my Gunze H8 is screwed, it only remains fingers crossed to have a pot of Humbrol valid stock)
- Finish painting the seat
- Changes in the main wheels (based on the FM) and paint them (and those of nose gear)
- Finish painting to the rump and the exhaust nozzle
- Paint the inside of the fairing 40 OMERA
- And surely other tinkering I forget

I hesitate to add an access ladder ... What do you think? (I have one of Eduard IIIC)
10 days left to finish ... I think he feels good still painting at its first output  :P

Hi all,

I'm still alive, yes  ;D

The Mirage F1B and the Rafale E are in stand-by for the moment. Last WE, I started a new project, a Mirage IIIO of the Royal Australian Air Force.

The kit is the High Plane model in 1/72 and I make some modifications like open the electronic compartiment behind the cockpit :

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RAAF_Mirage_III_TRIAD_84_1.JPEG (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:RAAF_Mirage_III_TRIAD_84_1.JPEG)

The aircraft will be the A3-25 in the same camouflage. Decals came from the very first HPM short-run model kit

http://www.adf-serials.com.au/3a3.shtml (http://www.adf-serials.com.au/3a3.shtml)

This is the only pics of A3-25 I have found. If someone have another, I'm interested (and also by pics of other aircraft  ;) )

Some pics of the work already do :

Sorry not to have responded earlier  :-[
It's a pleasure for me to make a step-by-step  ;)

No more progress on the Mirage, but some on 2 old project. First, a C160R Transall of French Air Force and next, a FW Flitzer of French AF too  8)

The Transall :

It's my first diorama and it's easier than what I believed. It took me only one afternoon for doing it (with some advice from a friend by phone call).

Since my last post, there is some progress. I will put pictures (better quality) once everything is finished before this WE  :) (this model will be in an exposition in Lorient, France this WE)

Excellent 1st dio on the Flitzer, Dams! 8)

The nose & belly are a little bit clean, & a bit short on scrapes & dents, for even a gentle belly landing but that's the only thing I can find which might be improved.

Great work!

Was "beamed up" by aliens.  After being studied, they deposited it on Mars.  Been there around five decades.
Ground has Marsy redish look.
Great build-weathering-scene combination  :)

Hi all,

Some news for the Shack. Thank to a friend, I have an upgrade set for the Sanger kit :

Some works but it's still far better than original parts...

As I'm in England right now, I work on some preparation for 2 new project :
First, I'm thinking about some modification for a SF Rafale for a group build with a french friend on Master194.
Secondly, I start some CAD design for the second project, based on an Airfix kit.

Let see if someone will find it ^^

From the friend with whom I work on this project.

He did a major overhaul of original kit part and molding them to do resin copy. You can see his work here :

(too many photos to put here)

Don't try to translate everything, it doesn't bring anything more than the pictures because there was a lot of private joke ;)

When finished, I'll do plan and print it in 72nd scale for a full scratch.
I still have to buy the Armada hobby resin kit for the MAZ-537 tractor (approx €45 shipping incl.) :

Hi all,

I don't no where to put it so I give you the link here.
I was talking with Madhatter some days ago and I said him I participated to the paint of a Mirage 2000-5F from 5/330 Squadron of French Air Force. During this WE, we put a Go Pro in the shelter to make a Time-lapse but without any idea of the result... Yesterday, the video was done and it's not so bad  :D

Here the link :

Hope you like it  :)

oooooooooh - I like that! Quite possibly....no no...it is the best scheme I've seen on a Mirage to date! Now all we have to do is wait for the decal option to come out and I might actually buy a Mirage solely for that scheme
It's quite amazing to see how quickly a scheme like that is achieved on a real plane.  Heck, it took me a week just to do a 1/72 SU33!
Thanks for posting that Damien!

Thanks for your comments Simon.
For your Su-33, I suppose that you weren't 10 on it for masking and painting, right ?  ;D

New project with an old "in progress" build.
Few days ago, I discover the new MQ-8 for the US Navy : the C version based on Bell 407 :

And I had in my stock a similar chopper, the AS-350 Ecureuil (Squirrel) so I started the conversion. And the result :

It will have a Flir on the nose, like MQ-8C but I still have to scratch it. If you have any idea for other additions, I'll consider it  ;)

Don't know for the country... Maybe a french one, from CEAM squadron if French Air Force or a French Navy... Any suggestions are welcome.

Damien

In fact, it's with this kit that I discovered the MQ-8C and my brain made "TILT" 10 seconds later for the Squirrel conversion :P

Hi all,

No progress on the Squirrel, still thinking about modifications I can make with my spare part box.

BTW, I work on a CAD project :

I drawn it in 1/400th scale and its dimensions are : 837.5x480x170mm (approx 33x18.9x6.7 inch)

Maybe a future project (but, down-scale to 1/1000th  :P)

Edit :
Some progress :

Hi folks,

Long time since my last update on this project, so I come to give somes news.

In May, I took my car and go to the source to help me in this build with some photography :

It was a long trip from SW of France to Coventry UK, but I spent 2 others weeks in England (english lessons in Cambridge, IWM Duxford, spotting at Lakenheath AFB, RAF museum, FAA museum). A very good trip, I start again as soon as possible  :D
With the help of a member from Britmodeller, I visited WR963 and took as many photos as possible (https://picasaweb.google.com/113307970873518959955/AirbaseCoventry?authkey=Gv1sRgCLjisfHtiKz6JA#).
For 2015, the objective is to put "in cross" the model.

Since I go back from England, some events took me away from the Shack :
- Mirage F-1 retirement
- Flying Legend, Duxford
- and a formation for my future job

But the model still continue to progress little step by little step. During one of my last participation to a model exposition, I started to clean up the engine from the resin set from my friend :

Not an easy task when you only have a cutter and no dremel...  :o
And a test fit :

Since that (October), no progress. This the work did yesterday :

Not many, but I'll try to make update of progress each week.

Damien

As promise, the progress :

No more details to come (except for the cockpit and the 2 stations behind the cockpit wall), we can't see anything when close.
And the rear area started this afternoon :

No glue for the moment ;)
And this is what I'm trying to reproduce :

Hi all,

I came to put a new project in final approch and I see that I didn't post any progress of the Shack  :-[

First, the progress since the last update on the Growler :

I'll probably start the paint job of this area with a coat of Aluminium soon  :)

Then, my last project : a 1/72th JF-17 Thunder from Trumpeter.

With Klir/Future coat :

And before Klir/Future coat but big part dry fitted :

Hope you like it  ;)

Hi Simon,

Happy to read you again. Yes, my England trip was a very good experience and meeting the people of the Coventry's Shack a very good source of motivation  :)
I will go back on the Shack soon with the beginnig of interior paintjob.

Small progress on the JF-17. I apply a layer of oil paint in the panel line (I don't know the name of this process in english, in french we call it "le jus")

Normally, it will be finish soon.

I'm thinking about the next project :
- E-2C fuselage under construction (1/72)
- KAI T-50 whif (1/48) (maybe a replacement of the French Alphajet in the Air Force or a French Agressors Squadron)
- F-35A whif (1/48) (not yet decided on the scheme and nationality)

I really like how that JF-17 is coming along, Damian! The colors remind me of how some planes look after final assembly on the factory floor before heading off to the paint shop.

In the U.S. version of English, we refer to that painting technique as applying a wash. As with many things artistic, the French have a more elegant way to say it.

Thanks Brian  :D
It's exactly what I want to do, an aircraft just after final assembly. For the diorama, it will have a mechanic from a Hasegawa set (http://www.hasegawausa.com/product-images/hsgs1876box-lg.jpg) doing final inspection and the floor paint as the first picture of Greg and maybe a tool box.

I made some mistake during the paint job like the green too light and a missing green zone in the underside but unfortunately I saw that too late for the last one...

Thanks for the "wash" word, I knew it but I forgot  :-[

Since my trip, I try to don't use Google Translate when writing my message to make some progress, so feel free to correct me if I make a mistake it will be helpful  :)

Hi guys,

The JF-17 is not finish yet because I'm running out of white paint for the moment...  :-[
But the mechanician is done :

Did by a member of my scale model club, a figurinist  :)

Otherwise, I found an A340-300 in my stock and I want to do a military variant. For this, I watch the 707 and 737 conversion in the US and found 2 candidates as basis :

- E-8C JSTARS:

- 737 AEW&C :

- Or a mix of JSTARS and AEW&C (an excuse to put anti-roll keel of the AEW on the JSTARS  ;D )

Which one do you prefer ?
Or do you have any other idea ? (except Tanker and rotodome AWACS)

Given it is an Airbus product, make L'Armee de L'Air and add all the bumps and bulges and blades and baguette's as required as the French like to have indigenous technology and control over their military systems.

Bit like one of the early E-10A proposals:

Maybe make it a French equivalent to the E-8 or perhaps a joint British/French alternate to the RAF's Sentinel R.1s but using the same systems:

Didn't know this pics of the E-10, thanks Greg. I will go on this configuration in this case  :)

Of course, it will be a French Air Force aircraft. I have found enough decal for squadron, registration and Air base number.

For the moment, no many things to show. The fuselage is close and the wings are in progress :

How did I miss this?? Way cool Damien! I love the A330/340 and had often thought of making the A-330 MRT. I got excited when Revell re-released the 330 recently in Thai markings but I realised it was still the same old tooling. I'm going to have to make sure I check your read more often

Thanks Simon.

I really love the 330 too. I plan to make a MRTT like you with the new revell box (need to find a box before) and I think you'll be interested by this build if you didn't know it already :

(In czech but pics speak by themself.)

Do you that an AWACS version (10m rotodome) will appear for the Indian AF in the next few year ? (Airbus won the contract recently for 6+4 aircraft, that's why I didn't want to make a rotodome AWACS for this 340)

Back to the 340 build.
I started the military conversion :

Hi Brian, thanks for your words  :D

Alongside the F-404-GE diorama, I will bring back an old kit started since almost 7 years : Mirage IV 1/48.
Pollux gave me some idea with his thread ( http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5753.0 (http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=5753.0) ).

It will be a long terme because I had to rescribe the kit but I will have some time to loose in evening starting from next week (I finally found a job (http://www.sherv.net/cm/emo/happy/happy-dancing.gif)).
Somes details for this project (I haven't finish every details) :
- Mirage IV, French Air Force (squadron unknowed for the moment, maybe the "Gascogne")
- Improved cockpit (Mk10, glass cockpit)
- Improved engine (ATAR 9K50)
- IFF in front on the nose
- More antennas
- 1 semi recessed fuel tank
- Various load-out (Magic II, GBU, AS-30, jamming pod under 8 pylon (2 for each wing + 4 under fuselage)

Some pics of the stuff I found for the project :

- Heller Mirage IV 1/48 (before dismantlement and rescribing) :

- Kittyhawk Mirage F-1 exhaust nozzle (ready to make resin copy) :

- From Wingman Kfir C.10 box :

Hi guys,

My last finished build. MQ-9 Reaper in Ace Combat scheme from Skunkworks Models in 1/72th.
The decals come from the remaining of a decal sheet (Su-33 Hasegawa Ace Combat) sent by Madhatter :)

Thanks Greg and Brian  :D

Brian, for the weatering of the underside (as for the upper), I use the same technique as here :

http://www.master194.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=94481&start=75#p1190074 (http://www.master194.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=94481&start=75#p1190074)

Oil paint directly apply on the acrylic paint (Gunze). Let dry until the oil became matt (15-20min) and wipe with a dry tissu to remove all excedent ;)

I'm working on 2 next project. 1 A321 from Asiana Airlines and a whif, but keep this one for me for the moment  :P

Hi guys,

Here is my last build (finished yesterday) since the Reaper. Also a whif based on Ace Combat video game universe.

The kit is from Heller in 1/72th scale and build out of the box (except for the shaft between turbine engine and main rotor transmission box) :

Thanks Greg. I don't have a good production rate but I'm still looking at the forum time to time (even if I'm not really active  :-[ )

Next builds are programmed. The most advanced one is an Airbus A321 modified to become an Airborne Ground Surveillance System (based on the principe of Boeing E-8 Mercury and P-8AGS proposal)
But before, I have to finished an Argentina A-4B (almost done) and a Pakistan Mirage IIIEA (paint job will be done tomorrow if everything going well). I will post pics when they will be over ;)

The last one : an A-4P from Airfix started 5 1/2 years ago.

Valiant effort on the Airfix A-4B   A bit too glossy, slats should be fully down (unless strapped up), speed brakes open half millimeter or so
Poor Airfix A-4B, that tarp should be bigger to hide Airfix's misshapen nose and rubbish overall detail.
Title: Re: Dams301 thread : 1/72 A-4P (finished), page 9
Post by: dams301 on February 11, 2018, 05:18:17 PM
Thanks for your comments.

FAAMAN, you are right for all points. I give reasons for those mistakes:
- the glossy is because I didn't varnish yet in satin because of temperature outside which is a bit cold in the evening and even in the day. So I wait for a window to varnish it when temperature will be better.
- For the slat, I was aware of that. The build was made quickly in one day during an exhibition so I could pratice painting with a friend in the second day. So no cockpit and no paint in the intake (that's why there is a tarp). I choose to not take in account these detail for the slat.
- I didn't know for this misshape. I don't know many thing about the A-4, only pick-up the first box of jet with low price in the exhibition retailler  ;D
But maybe one day I'll do another skyhawk in 1/48th thanks to this quick build  ;)

TOPHE, that's exactly what I will apply for the next coming model

The Airfix A-4B is awful, poor shapes and poor details  :o :o
I have an accurising thread on ATF ;   https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/airfixtributeforum/airfix-1-72-douglas-a4b-4p-skyhawk-a03029-t47356.html (https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/airfixtributeforum/airfix-1-72-douglas-a4b-4p-skyhawk-a03029-t47356.html)    , this details the many issues with the kit, so far the USN A-4B and the FAA A-4P
The Fujimi A-4's in 72nd are best, so are the ESCI 72nd A-4E's  ;)
Can't help you with 1/48 scale A-4's, I don't build in this scale.

As indicated by Elmayerle, it's the 1/48 AFV Club F-5E. Originally, the Swiss box but I change my mind and someone provided me the Taiwan decals sheet from another box

I'm rather proud of the final results even if it will be not easy to have a similar results on next build as I was assisted on the paint job by a friend which have better paint tooling (HS Infinity 0.15mm airbrush vs chinese made airbrush in 0.2mm  ;D) and skills. That's one very sharp, clean A321, Dams!

I always say these sorts of schemes are deceptively simple. It's not easy to get it looking so crisp.

Hi guys,

The A321 is finally done:

The country "Emmeria" is from the Strangereal Universe of the Ace Combat franchise (video game). There will be more build from this universe in my next project as I have drawn 6 or 7 other decals set for other aircraft  ;)

Hope you will like it.

Hi guys,

New project on the bench, the Academy KAI T-50 at 1/48.
I'll go for a "TA-50 like" version with some armement underwing and an engine change (SNECMA M88 :P)

And the loadout:

From left to right :
- MICA IR
- GBU-12 on TER
- drop tank
- Damocles targeting pod
- drop tank (not on the pic)
- AGM-65
- MICA IR (not on the pic).

Not sure about the paint scheme yet, so if you have suggestion your help is welcome and appreciated

Hope you like it

Hi,

Thanks Greg :D

First paint colour applied:

The colour and scheme will be inspired by french Mirage F-1CT scheme:

Looking good.  You'll probably need s demarcation line of some kind to set off the radome, either a scribed line or a subtle shift in color to set it off.

Thanks for the remark. It's planned, the radome will be paint in a darker grey (Gunze H301/FS 36081 vs H305/FS36118 for the actual grey) once the scheme will have been fully applied.

One cold easily see this happening for real...though the pressure from the M346 would be high.

You're right Greg, I'm afraid we would never see a french KAI T-50 as replacement of Alphajet because of the M-346  :icon_crap:
I have planned to do a french T-50, but as I don't have the decals yet and the whole idea of what I want to do, it will be a fictionnal country from "Ace Combat" universe for this one  ;)

Some news on the paint, I managed to apply the second colour today. Masking was longer than expected so I spent the whole afternoon on it  :-[

Tomorrow, I'll start to work on different grey shade on the airframe (radome, wingtips) and loadout

It could have potentially happened if the ROKAF had selected the Rafale over the F-15K back in 2002 (reportedly the Rafale came out tops in the technical evaluation).  This could have led to a reciprocal deal whereby the Armée de l'Air acquire a M88 powered T-50F (for France) as a replacement for their Alpha Jets.  One could see this further developed to also offer a carrier based trainer version and even light attack versions similar to the TA/A/F-50 family.  Such a development might even provide an interesting option to replace French Sepecat Jaguars.

And looking what you said, I'm considering to switch country for a french one  :P
I have to check the spare decals.

Edit: after checking my spare decals, I found what to do an aircraft of the EC 4/30 "Artois" (formely 1/13 "Artois" on Mirage F-1CT)  8)

I don't know if I will have time to update during the week, so my next post will probably be the finished model

About the only thing I would have done differently would be the placement of the fuselage roundel.  I note that you have gone for a similar placement to that on their Rafales:

wheels I might have gone something similar (i.e. more rearward) like that done for the Mirage 2000s and Mirage F-1s:

Personal preference though and not a criticism against your wonderful build.

Thanks for yor feedback, I appreciate  :D

Greg, in fact, it was my first idea too. In LH side, it will have been OK but on the RH side, the APU exhaust will have been right under and I didn't found this good on my point of view. But after your intervention, I notice that I was too focused on the ROKAF roundel position and maybe if I had opted for a little bit more forward position (just in front of the APU inlet), it will have been good at the rear :-[
I still have a project for a french AF Alphajet replacement aircraft (so a strict trainer as the T-50 and not TA-50), so I keep your idea in mind for it

Everything is packed for this WE exhibition and I also take the box of what will be probably the next project: a ROCAF F-16B to go with my ROCAF F-5E done last year and one of the F-CK-1 I have in stash (the other one will be a what-if  :P)

For some reason, this angle made me think of the AMX immediately. Hmmmm, single-seat KAI T-50 with more fuel in place of the backseater? Either deciacted single-seater canopy (AMX) or same profile (Mitsubishi F-1/T-2 analogue)?

So far, good feedback from people at the exhibition (a lot of question from visitors not used to "what-if"), will next exhibition this week-end for more feedback. On the french forum Master194.com, good feedback too even if there are not fan of what-if

The single seater does exist... at least on the drawing board as a proposal for the KF-X program :P

But your idea to replace the back seat by more fuel (or relocated electronics) sounds good to me (something similar to L-39 to L159 or even Mitsubishi T-2 to F-1  :-* )

I started to work on the F-16B last WE and... put it back in the box  ;D
Instead, I think I will go for something more exotic... a ROCAF AIDC F-CK-1C from FMK

Hi guys,

Looks like I forgot to post here my latest build... Sorry about that  :-[

So I finished a few weeks ago an MQ-47B of the JASDF in the 2 tones blue scheme:

Platz/Italeri in 1/72 scale.

Not sure yet about what will be my next build as I'm preparing my moving to a new apartment. So the only objective for this year will be to do a F-104 from Kinetic (challenge build with some friend).

Hi guys,

I didn't plan to start a new model before moving to my new apartment but following some new event here in France about the Covid-19 sanitary crisis, I have plenty of time to use (confinement at home for at least 15 days, but will be probably more...) so I unpacked my model workshop and pick a box in the stash...

I started in the afternoon an old Mirage IIIC from Heller. It will be a real world project this time: French Air Force, based in Djibouti with a pair of Magic I and maybe supersonic tank.
No major upgrade planned, only some details in the cockpit with parts from a Kinetic Mirage IIIE. Otherwise, it will be straight from the box.

Here the progress of the afternoon:

F-15E of Garuda 1 (player's character of the video game Ace Combat 6). I made some customs decals for this last year and it will be based on the Revell F-15E in 1/48th.

For the Maverick, I have to say that I don't even know if it is a correct loadout or not, so I believe you ^^

I chose an Air-to-Air loadout you can play in the game: 2 AIM-9 + 6 AIM-120:

I still have some black area to paint (rear end of the cockpit and seat) to completely finish it before installing it in the part of the front fuselage

Hope you like it.

It looks like there's a Maverick on the inner shoulder pylon. I don't think it would actually fit there space-wise.
But Mavericks on Strike Eagles are cool. I don't think I've seen any Mavericks on operational Strike Eagles. But in Whiffworld, I suppose the triple launcher would work well on the wing pylon. Would certainly look cool.

Since you're going for the air-to-air loadout, how about another pair of AIM-120s per wing pylon?  :icon_beer: In addition to the AIM-9 and AIM-120 on the shoulder pylons.

Kinda like Boeing is proposing for their F-15X.

I like your idea. It's not one of the loadout available in the game but I think I will go for your suggestion.
I only have to find 8 more AIM-120 as the Revell kit only include 2 AIM-120B & 4 AIM-9L/M :P

I thought the Eagle was a pretty big bird even in 1/72.

People that build F-15s in 1/48 must live in hangars, or at least have a lot more space than I do.

That front office is looking great!

To be honest about the size... I don't really start to think about where I will put it. All I know is that the boxes where I put my models are full so I need a new one  ;D

Little update:

On the F-15, I have installed the air intake and CFTs. Windshield is also installed since this afternoon.

I'm still impressed by how well parts fit
I also started to work on exhaust part, but nothing relevant to show for the moment (only white paint, I'm still waiting my last order for paint to go further on this  :-[ )

And, I started to work on a French Navy F/A-18C(FN) :

Hi guys,

Some progress on the F-15E.

Aside some sub-assembly work, I scratched a dual laucher for AIM-120 with 2 LAU-127 from a Kinetic F-16 and a double ejector from a FMK F-CK-1:

Hi guys,

Long time since my last post. I changed apartement and job among other things, so it has been busy time and didn't manage to finished any scale model since all those changes until recently.

No updates on the F-15, I still have to work on the loadout.
Today, I will show my last 2 builds finished in the last few days/weeks: a Zero and a F-16B.

Tamiya A6M2 Zero (old mold)

I did a little bit too heavy weathering on this one, due to my lack of training after this long break  ;D

F-16B Kinetic (old mold):

More happy with the weathering on this one.

The next one will be a Sri Lanka AF Kfir (Kinetic) and after that I will a what-if JF-17 (already on the bench) and J-10C from Trumpeter.

Hope you like it  :D

Both very good builds, pretty much excellent, in fact!
