RNZAF Scottish Aviation Bulldog
« on: July 28, 2016, 05:30:57 AM »
Hi all,
A while back I expressed a desire to find an Aurora 1/72 Lockheed Cheyenne heli model, and a good friend in Texas promptly emailed to ask me my current address. Inside the box with the rather rare chopper was a MISB, blister pack Airfix SA Bulldog.

What on earth do I do with a Bulldog? I know a guy with a few of them but I've never seen them in person, nor have I ever really had a desire to build one.

Then, about a year later, inspiration struck:

You're all very kind. She ain't quite done yet - decal issues, you may notice one of the roundels lifting - but I really wanted to share at least one photo. Hoping to tone down the glossiness just a little, too. It's a lovely little kit, and something I'd likely never have built without it having fallen into my lap.

Very nice 'Zac! That Red Checkers-style scheme looks great on the Bulldog  :)

I had the checkers on the cowl...unfortunately, even after being doused in Micro-Set and Micro-Sol, they wouldn't conform to the cowls. Very disappointing as they looked great on it!

I'm probably going to be burned at the stake for saying this :o but the only times I've had decals "stuff up" is when I've used decal setting solution :o
I didn't normally use decal setting solution but due to the urging of other club mates at the time I forked out the readies for a couple of brands. Most resulted in disasters, only one worked relatively well but it was temperamental. So I ditched the offending solutions and went back to normal :))
For years I would just use warm water, applying the decals over very dry Testors Glosscoat varnish (only in the last few years have I found decals 'silvering' under the varnish on models 20+ years old). I've always just slipped them into place from the backing, wicked off the excess moisture and used a tissue to push the decal onto the surface, using pressure and a slight wiping/rubbing action to make the decal conform.
Most probs are caused by leaving the decal in the water too long (reducing the potency of the decal's glue) or using water that is too cold.

I built this kit for the first time in 1977 ;)

FAAMAN:  I see what you did there  :)  Very nice!  Looks like the kit goes together pretty well, may have to try one sometime.

OK, regarding the setting solution . . . . I just noticed some guys digging a hole for a huge stake, and bringing up firewood.  You might want to run  ;)

Sometimes a little spit helps (can reactivate dried decal adhesive) and diluted white glue is good for the most difficult cases.
