but the only times I've had decals "stuff up" is when I've used decal setting solution
I didn't normally use decal setting solution but due to the urging of other club mates at the time I forked out the readies for a couple of brands. Most resulted in disasters, only one worked relatively well but it was temperamental. So I ditched the offending solutions and went back to normal
For years I would just use warm water, applying the decals over very dry Testors Glosscoat varnish (only in the last few years have I found decals 'silvering' under the varnish on models 20+ years old). I've always just slipped them into place from the backing, wicked off the excess moisture and used a tissue to push the decal onto the surface, using pressure and a slight wiping/rubbing action to make the decal conform.
Most probs are caused by leaving the decal in the water too long (reducing the potency of the decal's glue) or using water that is too cold.
