Irish Airshow Display Hunter F 6
« on: January 29, 2014, 02:49:58 PM »
In the late 1960s, the Republic of Ireland thought that a nice, fast, flashy plane would look good at various airshows around Eire, and Europe as well. Casting about, they found a Hawker Hunter F.6 awaiting the scrapper in the UK, and after some haggling, procured it for their emerging Airshow Team.

They settled upon a nice two-tone green paint scheme, and named the "Team" after one of their most famous aviators, Seamus O'Ryan. A local autobody paintshop was directed to paint his image on the bottom of the plane, but somehow the idea got slightly scrambled, and it was rolled out bearing the constellation "Orion" instead.

A faulty gear selector lever caused the plane to be badly damaged after the fifth airshow, and unfortunately, that was the last of "O'Ryan the Hunter".

Kit used: Atrocious Nichimo 1/48 "Hunter". The less said the better!

Al,

The Atrocious Nichimo Hunter was actually a copy of the just as atrocious Lindberg hunter.  Had both and was quite surprised to see that one was a clone of the other.  Nichimo also did the same with the 1:48th scale Monogram Avenger and Dauntless kits but included a motorization feature.

Hehehe, I LOVE the 'O'Ryan/Orion' mix-up!  :)

But it does look good in IAC colours anyway. Perhaps they fitted the later squadron F6s with the home-grown 'Shillelagh' AAM?  ;)
Regards
Kit
