Me 209 in Foreign Service
« on: July 03, 2013, 07:48:02 AM »
Some time back, I was playing with a Spiteful-like development of the Bf 109. This aircraft was to combine Bf 109 parts with a P-51's laminar wing and belly radiator (the latter idea, as Logan pointed out, not being completely original), and powered by a larger DB 603 engine.

I dubbed this mélange the Me 209 (iii) but there wasn't much room for profiles in the RW timeframe. Buuut, if we stretch beyond '46 ...  ;)

(Top) A Hungarian Me 209Ca-1 of 101/5 szazad 'Puma', Magyar Királyi Honvéd Légierő. 101/5 was the first MKHL Me 209 unit, formed to provide top cover for Hungarian He 162A-2 'Szalamandra' jet fighters.

All Hungarian Me 209s were assembled from German-made parts at the Duna Repulogepgyar factory at Szigetszentmiklos, just south of Budapest. By May 1946, the 'Pumák', including 101/5, had pulled back to Petersdorf (in Styria, Ostmark).

W-1+14 carries the 'Piros Puma' squadron emblem on its nose. On the tail is the unofficial 'Szárnyas Mókus' ('Winged Squirrel') marking of 101/5 (call sign 'Mókus').

(Bottom) A Croatian Me 209A-2 of 2. Lovacko Jato, 1. Zrakoplovna Skupina, Hrvatsko bojno zrakoplovstvo based at Zagreb. Like all HBZ Me 209s, 'crna 10' was ex-Luftwaffe. These aircraft were intended to protect HBZ He 162s but the Salamanders never arrived in Croatia.

This fighter has an odd mixture of markings. Although the national insignia are of the subdued style approved in June 1945, 'crna 10' retains the 'hi-viz' tail  markings. Also visible on the fin are a claimed 4 1/2 kills (3 US and one each Italian and British).

Although detailed to protect the Croatian capital, 'crna 10' was lost off Dubrovnik to a USAAF  P-51D of the 100th FS on 19 March 1946. Shot down in flames, 'crna 10' went down
into the Adriatic . The pilot, Poručnik Mihajlo Jelak, was lost  with his aircraft.

You've created an absolute stunner, apophenia! She looks sleek and fast!

I especially like that you show them in "lesser known" axis markings.

Sweet.

I like it!
One thing that occurred to me is that they might have considered a bigger (taller?) fin and rudder. I believe the Bf 109 tail was a little marginal at take-off and landing speeds.

... lesser known markings is good too. If I'm out of ideas, I tend to favor Finnish markings but that is just my own form of patriotism, and they aren't exactly lesser known.

Very nice plane, lovely design and very plausible.

(Just my own opinion, but this plane needs some Vihy's air force candy stripes  :P)
On the bench : Fw 190D - Ta 152H - Jet Fw 190 - Modernized SPAD XIII - French Stealth plane

Thanks folks!

Good point perttime. I'd originally intended to adopt an Me 262-derive tail but it was waaay too big. Then, I was just going to enlarge the Bf 109's wooden tail ... but somehow that got lost in the shuffle  :-[

Finnish markings are my fav too. I'm imagining the Me 209 having a fairly low rate of production. Still, any Finnish jets will need top cover on approach too  ;)
