Napier-Heston Racer ideas and inspiration

Napier-Heston Racer
Heston Type 5 Racer
Heston High Speed Aircraft J.5
Nuffield-Napier-Heston J5
... and I think there were a few other designations.

Wikipedia, 1943 article on it at Flight Global archives.

Someone might have noticed that I like this unlucky aircraft a lot  8)
I have some derivatives in my "Erryplanes" thread, starting at http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=2970.msg44935#msg44935

I'll attach a few photos that I found in an image search recently, and hadn't seen before.

  • Measures the actual aircraft before modelling it...we have the photographic evidence.

Heritage Aviation Models (kitsforcash) do a resin model of it in 1/48

Unfortunately, if the photo's are anything to go by (&, so far, they are), the kit is completely out of proportion & has nothing like the sleek lines of the real aircraft (which I'd love to whif into an early-WW2 fighter). :icon_crap:

It is hard to tell. Partly, I get the impression that the photos distort the shape: Trying to do closeups with a short lense, or something. A couple of other photos don't look quite that bad:
http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/14796-heston-napier-racer/

A Dujin resin kit in 1/72 is sometimes mentioned: http://www.wingsofpeace.net/gallery/N/Napier-Heston/Napier-HestonType5.html
I think the aircraft gets pretty small in that scale.

I saw something about a 1/32 kit but cannot find the source now.

Hmm!? Same photo's! They do look much better on Britmodeller but, still, not quite right.

Too expensive, anyway, for kitbashing, so I guess that idea's off the list.

Its a puzzler - the photos aren't at quite the same angles, and while I agree the kit looks squat compared to the B&W images, it
looks quite close compared to the plan views.

Put a bubble canopy from a Spitfire or Seafire on it?
